We sailed the final leg of our trip down to Trinidad yesterday and are now safely tucked into Crews Inn Marina in Chaguaramas. We will be here for the rest of hurricane season, which lasts until November 1st. It sure feels good to be south of the hurricane belt, we no longer have to worry about tropical waves showing organization or low pressure systems forming off the coast of Africa (the first signs of dreaded hurricanes). And it was an easy trip here, smooth sailing with a bright moon, just a short 90 mile overnight trip. Luckily we had no problems as we passed the northern tip of Venezuela (which is an area riddled with modern-day pirates wielding machine guns, we have heard horror stories of cruisers running into problems here). We still can't believe that ... read more

Uh, drug street? Not interested, thanks. So that's how my afternoon went. But let me give a brief rehash (oops, pun) of the week. My man Rohan has kept me well stocked with good food - goat roti and food from the Breakfast Shed, including callaloo, um, don't know what the rest of the plate was, but it was good. I think it included macaroni salad, pasta salad, salad greens, provision (cousin of cassava), big boney hunks of meat, plantain, rice, the list keeps going on... So in return, I took him out to dinner at Sweet Lime. Refer to previous postings to find out the full definition of Lime, but it means hanging out. Rohan is the taxi driver from before. In any case, all has been welcome diversions from the evil client of the ... read more

The History Of Thailand Thailand is the only country in Southeast Asia to be able to claim that they have never been a European colony or have been divided by a serious civil war. But the beginning of Thailand is still debated. The traditional story of how Thailand came to be is that the first people fled to Thailand from China to escape Kublai Khan's attacks from Mongolia. Other theories include that the Thais originated in Thailand a millenium or two ago and the Thai's found in China today migrated there about 1,000 years ago. Either way, it can be proven that the first principality of Thailand was Sukhothai, "the dawn of happiness" in 1238. Chiang Mai was established in 1296 and became the ruler over the northern region. By the 13th century the Thais became ... read more

Trinidad was not on our list of countries to visit, but it was the best way to fly from Caracas to Georgetown as there were no direct flights. We decided to stay a few days since we were there. It was strange arriving in Port of Spain. We had been travelling South America for two and a half months, so this english speaking Caribbean island was something very different. The taxi man spoke english and drove on the left. The cars were more modern and drivers more courteous. We stayed with Mona at her bed and breakfast, a lovely old colonial house close to the center of town. Her house was on a 90s postage stamp. We arrived quite late in the afternoon so first job was to eat. Lots of restaurants were just a few ... read more

So I'll go ahead and send this email since it was all queued up in drafts before the internet went down. But just know that, and I don't even know how to get into it now, because I'm so tired from all this liming, tomorrow's email is going to have some interesting info. S It's quite hard to sit here in this office day after day, staring out the window at all the activity going on outside. At least Trinidad isn't like Tobago, in that it isn't a resort. Trinidad is where the industry is… But today, I got out for a little bit. The driver, who is right up my alley because everyone and their cousin knows him, and he knows the best gossip, took me out for a little drive. Even more up my ... read more

I think this is the greatest and couldn't stop laughing over this one I saw in the PAHO office here in Trinidad... I think we need to to start using it... Under a poster of a hip Trinidadian youth going to meet his friends on the corner... And ever so casually, he is placing his "tool" (a wrapped condom in his back pocket). A Craftsman Always Has His Tools... Ah yes, I guess all young men fancy that they are quite the "craftsman" while they are out practicing their craft...... read more

While I've been here I have taken a great interest in what is known as the Queens Park Savannah. Also known as the largest roundabout in the world, I think the area inside the roundabout (traffic circle to those of you not in the know) may be similar to Central Park and whatever they call the one in Spain, I can't remember, I think it is El Retiro. It is huge and essentially a park with a one way street all the way around it. Except for you can't see across it or to the end of it. Everyday when I go by in the morning, in the evening, whenever, people are out there playing soccer, playing what might be rugby, but I don't know exactly how rugby is played, jogging, walking, sitting and talking, whatever. ... read more

The people in Trinidad are absolutely the nicest people on the face of the earth. I want to move here immediately. But first, let me tell you about it... I sat next to a really nice Trinidadian on the plane, not that I really chat it up with people on planes, but we talked toward the end of the flight and turns out she is in policy and her sister works for the people that pay my bills former owner in New York and knows this Trinidadian at my work that I know. Everyone on the plane was falling over each other to help with things, and do you know so and so... When I say what I'm doing in Trinidad, they are like, do you need me to take you to the hospital, are you ... read more
