So, from Monday we decided we should probably make a start on our research and sort ourselves out properly. This involved my first exploration of Trinidad and its public transport system alone, as well as signing for our new house and sorting ourselves out to move in today! I'm so excited to be able to cook and eat proper food!! So far ive had lucky charms for breakfast, bread which tasted more sugary than the lucky charms and several takeaways. The Caribbean diet certainly isnt the healthiest!!
Anyway, so on Monday I went to meet a friend of a friend who lives in Trinidad and who is involved in the Cocoa industry. This showed my a whole different side to the island that what I've already experienced. Where I am currently staying, El Socorro, and the areas around it are really really busy, loud and chaotic. However, some of the places I went on Monday you would be forgiven for thinking that you were in Spain on a holiday. I went to several gated communities and an apartment with a skyline view of Port of Spain. Really NOTHING like the Trinidad I'd experienced so far. The people living
in these areas also spoke with a much weaker accent, so I could actually understand what they were saying - which was a nice change!! I ate dinner cooked by her friend, who was a chef, in a massive apart with an amazing view. We had some Trinidad vegetables (figs - which are savory bananas) and some other things I can't remember the name of! And some fish soup which I tried, but I think that was bit much after a lifetime of avoiding fish!! After dinner I headed back home and had a few beers with everyone and caught up on what we'd all done!
On a side note, on Monday morning we went to the local shop, where Raj the cleaner who always chats to us when we go, invited us to go 'lime' (their word for hanging out) with him and invited us to his birthday party etc. As we were leaving, he then ran outside and stopped us so that we could meet his sister! Just an example of how overly friendly everyone is and also how long it takes to try and leave anywhere without an hour long conversation!!!
Yesterday (Tuesday),
we went to sign for our new house and pay the first months rent. Again there was a lot of talking/getting sidetracked by everything. It was a pretty slow day and the rest of it we spent outside emailing people/sorting out our plans for the next few weeks. I also met Earle's (the owner of the house were staying at) cousin. Shes definitely my favorite person I've met since I've been here! Shes the only woman I've seen actually stand up for herself in front of men, probably because shes spent most of her time in London/America! But woman here generally stick to keeping quiet and let the men be in charge! She however, was crazy. She was at least 70 and was showing us how to wine and telling us to where to go out in carnival etc.!
Today were moving out of our guest house to our own house. I'm actually a bit sad about it as I feel like I've met everyone of Earles family members and they couldnt have been more welcoming and friendly if they tried!! I also don't think Earle has realized that were leaving today, because hes not said anything
to us and I'm fairly sure we were meant to be out the place by 11. I think hes secretly quite sad that were leaving aswell!!!
Anyway, I've put up some pictures of the new house! I'll try and write again soon!
PS I don't know if ive mentioned but you cant walk anywhere without hearing Soca/Calypso music blasting out everywhere! They all sound the same if im honest. Anyway here are some of our favourites ha!
