Just as the sun began to rise, the night chorus stopped … and the alarm went off! Peeking out onto my balcony, I could see that the sky was already a bright blue and suspected that it was already warm outside. After a cooling shower, I dressed and made my way to breakfast. Watermelon, fresh pineapple and melon were followed by a cheese and onion omelette cooked by Christopher, the morning chef. He looked hot, standing in the open air, cooking over a flat plate. At least, I had the fresh orange juice to cool me down, although the coffee probably warmed me up again! Breakfast over, I went across to the supermarket to buy my packed lunch – garlic pitta bread grabbed my attention and making friends was probably not going to be an option ... read more

Although it rained heavily in the night and the frogs pretty much sang through till dawn, I slept well and awoke with the alarm at 07h00 (that’s 12h00 BST!). The first task of the day was to make coffee, provided by the hotel in my coffee maker. Not too successful as four cups of water only seemed to produce one cup of coffee and I suspected that the mechanism was proving alien to my bleary attempts at caffeine injection! Still, a very nice coffee emanated, albeit smaller than anticipated. After a cooling shower, I headed across for breakfast. Slices of watermelon came first, accompanied by a drink of fresh orange and tamarind. More coffee appeared and was joined by a very nice omelette (with onion), bacon and ham. Back in my room, I prepared to head ... read more

Just a week after returning from Amsterdam, I’m back in an airport. Just yesterday, spring was beginning to appear, the grass beginning to grow and the blossom beginning to bring colour to the garden. Sadly, yesterday’s weather was not spring-like and a cold wind tempered the promises of what nature was expecting. Today’s a different story. I don’t know if it’s because I’m already 200 miles farther south or whether I’m in a different frame of mind. Maybe it’s just that I’m going to be combining three passions in one trip and my outlook has changed. Maybe it’s simply that the weather is better today than yesterday. Whatever the reason, at 07h00, the airport was quiet, check-in fast, security efficient, the waiting area comfy and the departure boards showing exotic places … Dubai …Port of Spain ... read more

Yes indeed, another day in paradise. Despite the weather forecasts showing nothing but T-Storms for our little island, we have been enjoying gorgeous weather. A little rainy at times, but its not like Vancouver, folks! It blows over and out comes the sun and 280C. After a day of reading and lounging around the pool, Terri and I went to the happy hour beach bar to chat it up with others. A very nice crowd of people there tonight. During happy hour, when you order a drink, they bring two so it was a lively chatter mixed in with quite a few run drinks of different persuasions. A young couple from Ireland were very friendly and looks like we may have visitors to Vancouver at some point in the future with a quid pro quo place ... read more

Rain Rain Rain! Even the vacationers here are blaming us for the wet weather! We're gonna have to stop telling them we're from Vancouver....but just so you don't feel sorry for us, this first picture was taken just a few minutes ago (5pm) and its been like this since about 1pm. Not too shabby, eh?The day, even though wet, turned out ok as we took care of basic needs like laundry, answering emails, reading poolside and making new friends. After being in the pool talking with a nice couple from Orlando for a couple of hours, we excused ourselves and went to dinner at the Big Chef, a place highly recommended by others for their steaks. We had mixed reviews and thought it was mediocre at best. Guess we're getting more picky as we grow older. ... read more

It was an early morning for me as the beaconing sun tore away my sleepiness. I decided to walk the complete breadth of the beach while Terri slept. A few other early morning beachcombers shared the view of gentle waves creeping and falling over the sloping sands. A young man holding his baby girl stood mesmerized by it all while a runner stopped to google at her. A few hotel workers were combing the beach directly in front of their property, while a few others were preparing beach lounge chairs and umbrellas for rent to potential cruise tourists that will come later in the morning from nearby Castries. The very end of the beach was undeveloped by hoteliers and appeared to be the local home for the homeless as I saw some gathered under a tree ... read more

The Blog's title shows how relaxed we are...I've no idea what happened to one of our days, so this is either day 6 or day 7 I'm writing about, lol. (Its actually Day 7, but all the previous blog's titles may be in error...even more lol) We meant to do a little more food shopping yesterday but got so busy at the resort swimming and reading in the 84 degrees sun that, by the time happy hour came around (how can we not be happy every hour here?), we were just too tired! Let me tell you, the Rum Punches here really pack a punch...Terri can vouch for that, as well as vouch for me that I too was more than slap happy last night. Think I still am slightly....anyway, I digress... After a nice breakfast ... read more

Our little paradise is turning out to be just that as I sit here sipping on my grapefruit juice with Terri snoring ever so quietly in the bedroom behind me...the sunny weather has been faithful to us all here. Our 3rd day was spent lazing around the circular pool which, when traversed 1 lap, equals 75 metres so from now on til we leave I'm going to swim 15 laps a day. Our cohabitants we've met so far are from England, Chicago, Switzerland, Burnaby, and Boston. All nice people. The resort is a quiet place in the northwest part of the island and boasts having one of the best beaches. When cruise ships come in, they transport their customers to our beach because its so desired. We're now entering the low season so we've not been ... read more

Grenada to St Lucia – going North We left Grenada after a bit of a false start as we went alongside into the nearby dock in Prickly Bay to fill up with water and check out. This is a Caribbean ritual that comprises of taking the boat papers and passports to each island, filling out loads of forms (similar in each island) handing over hard cash and then doing the same ridiculous system on arrival at your next port of call. The smaller the banana republic the greater the amount of paperwork! This sounds like a local authority that I used to work at! So after filling up and saying a very sad goodbye to Mr and Mrs Maloo we waved goodbye and set off for the high seas. That was until we had ... read more

The ARC seems an age ago. We arrived in St Lucia after 15 and a half days at sea. It was at times exhausting, exhilarating and pretty tough - far tougher than we expected. The so-called "Milk-Run" across the Atlantic did not materialise for nearly the entirety of the crossing. Apologies for the changes in tense throughout I have patched this together from the emails and blog bits and pieces and with much of it written from distant memory and through rose-tinted spectacles. Our crew had been augmented by Vince Hayter (our tactician) who we know from sailing on the south coast and Ian and Kate Turnbull. Ian and Kate were found by Tim on Open Blue as being available for the ARC, after Tris Payne had to pull-out due to work commitments. Ian runs his ... read more
