So Janice and I are in Lorraine's Internet café at Black Point. Janice is working on e-mail in the room next to the Café and I am in the café reading my book and watching CNN. It's late in the day and the café is starting to fill up with people coming in for dinner. Lorraine is not what one would call a gourmet cook but what she makes she does well, primarily deep fried or hamburgers. In fact she is responsible for Bob swearing off deep-fried conch and fries (a result of overindulgence). But I digress; I am sitting quietly one ear to the reports on CNN of the Japanese earthquake and the other to the variety of discussions going on at the tables waiting for dinner. Then I hear a voice, a very familiar ... read more

Our youngest daughter lived on board with us for three years and was fond of calling George Town, Exuma “camp for grown-ups” because there are so many activities to choose from and the pace can be the opposite of the usual laid-back and relaxing cruiser style. Cruisers here seem to fall into two categories-- you love it for all the things there are to do and the convenience of services, or you hate it because there are too many boats, too much radio chatter, just too much. So where does the crew of I Wanda fall? In both camps, actually. We find that we enjoy George Town very much indeed for its wonderful services, yet we like to escape too for quieter places. Exuma Markets has been the cruisers’ best friend for as many years as ... read more

I can't believe that four months have passed since we left Guatemala. We left in early November as planned and made our way up the Central American coast to Isla Mujeres, Mexico which was our last port before sailing to Florida. Hurricane season was not techically over at that point, but if you wait until the season is over it becomes very difficult making your way north when the "Christmas winds" set in and the northers start rolling though. Luckily no hurricanes threatened and we made it to the Dry Tortugas of Florida by mid November where we stayed a couple of days before sailing to Key West. Being in the U.S. with the boat was definitely a new experience for us. The U.S. is the land of plenty and believe me I couldn't wait to ... read more

Bahamas 2010-2011 Our long awaited crossing of the Gulf Stream was probably the best one we have had so far. The winds were light and we had to motor sail nearly all the way but the stream was benign. The seas were 2’ or less and the left over northerly swell was only about 5’ and about 10 seconds apart. We spotted the tops of the container cranes at Freeport Grand Bahamas about 08:30. They are visible about 25 miles from land since they must be about 120’ in the air. We docked at the Port Lucaya fuel dock, topped off our tanks and then went up to check in with Customs and Immigration. The Customs lady was there and had us cleared in and issued our one year cruising permit within 30 minutes. However, the ... read more

Ça affecte ... read more

Encore une fois ... read more

We left the marina at Turks and Caicos at high tide (basically because it is the only time we could leave) and set sail for the Bahamas. We were planning on an overnight trip to Conception Island, over 200 miles away. The weather was great, if not a little more wind and waves than expected. But we were going down wind and things were going along smoothly, and we were making great speed. To top it all off, we had one of the most beautiful sunsets off shore that we have ever seen. The sky was red and orange and pink everywhere you looked (the picture does not do it justice, trust me). It was a great night to sail, and we were just chugging along. But that all changed in the morning when we were ... read more

National Family Regatta week. We have had a great week, the National Family Regatta was held in George Town with lots of racing of the traditional Bahamian working boats. The post sailing partying has been pretty full on as well with some great music and lots of rum. Well I have to bid farewell to my goods friends Molly, Jason and Porter, who I will miss very very much. Thank you for being such good company, you have made this the trip of a life time, thank you, I miss you all very much. I now head off to the UK for a couple of weeks and Southern Star and my friends will move on to new places. However Jeremy and Carla have kindly offered to stay aboard Harbinger while I'm away and when I return ... read more

Hi everyone, sorry for the long delay in posting this page, but there really wasn't anywhere with sufficient band width to download the images. Anyway it took us 32 days to sail from Nassau to George Town in the southern Exumas and what a wonderful time we have had. We have seen storms, 3 inches of rain in half an hour! Lots of sunshine and quite a lot of wind. There are 365 islands in the Exuma chain and we have visited about 25. Of those Cays we visited only 3 have proper settlements of a hundred or more. They are Black Point, Little Farmers Cay and George Town, which is where we are now. Since leaving Fort Myers in Florida back in January I have sailed 534 Nm, crossed the gulf stream and navigated the ... read more

“Winter 2010 - Georgetown and Surrounding Harbors” Our arrival in Georgetown was delayed somewhat this year due to our month long stay in Ocean Reef Resort. However, life in Georgetown was much the same as the two previous years. Our mornings are usually spent doing boat maintenance, going to town for supplies, laundry, dropping off trash or filling our water tanks. Most afternoons cruisers gather on Volleyball beach to hear the latest cruising gossip, play cards or dominos, and usually take part in a couple of games of “fun volleyball”. Fun volleyball is played with 9 people on each side (3 lines of 3). Therefore it is a low impact sport. A couple of times a week there will be an ARG meeting (Alcohol Research Group) where we have a sunset beach party with drinks, hors ... read more
