It was a real stinker this Wednesday morning in NYC. The expected highs were close to 90F but it was the humidity that was a killer. I was dripping sweat just walking around in the shade let alone stepping out into the sun. Thought I would take a walk out to where the Intrepid is docked at pier 84 and decide if I wanted to go aboard or not. I found a current aircraft carrier docked next to the Intrepid (no idea which ship it was), and then decided to not board the Intrepid as it was too hot and looked too similar to the aircraft carrier I visited last year in San Diego. Next it was time for brunch and I made the trek down to the lower east side to Katz Deli which is ... read more

I arrived in my favourite city on Tuesday afternoon and it was stinking hot. I thought I would walk from Penn station to my hotel on W 51st Street to soak in the buzz and atmosphere of this great city. I manage to do that but also must have sweated a few litres and was stinky by the time I arrived at the hotel. The humidity was high and me having a large backpack meant there was no air getting to my back and my shirt was completely soaked at the 16 block walk north. My hotel room here is relatively small as per NYC standard but it is clean and close to Times Square and a single block from the Blue subway line. Convenience at it's best. I did some wandering around my immediate neighbourhood ... read more

The population was out in force today to help celebrate Memorial Day and remember all the lost lives whilst serving for the US and indeed for Western democracy. Many Americans are still serving in current global hotspots and everyday they put themselves in danger so we can maintain our way of life. I certainly have immense respect for the sacrifice they make for the rest of us. I went for a walk around Boston harbour this morning and found some expensive condos just south of the main ferry wharves. I then walked across an old abandoned bridge which must have carried trains or cars out to the piers near the Boston World Trade Center. There wasn't much out that way besides some piers, new condos and a few restaurants. The Boston fishing pier is also located ... read more

Spent an enjoyable day seeing the sights in sunny Boston. I think I have finally began my warm weather holiday! After a few days of warm weather in L.A, I have pretty much had cool/cold weather since so it was good to be back in t-shirt weather and sweating :) Didn't leave the hotel until after 10am and made my way down to the Faneuil Hall and bought myself a ticket for a trolley car hop-on hop-off tour. Boston is quite spread out and I thought jumping on a tour would allow me to get around. My first stop would be the U.S.S Constitution which is across the bridge and definitely a little too far to walk in this heat. The Constitution is an old navy sail ship and was undefeated in battle. It is still ... read more

Arrived in Boston after flying in from Chicago today. Only thing to note was I found the American Airlines terminal (T3) at O'Hare airport to be truly massive. It was probably bigger than the entire Sydney Airport and this terminal was only for AA and oneworld partners. Imagine combining all the terminals together - makes for a massive airport. Boston airport was close to downtown and after another $2 subway ride and short walk I arrived at my hotel. Room is quite roomy and comfortable so another pretty good choice. This hotel features a purified chilled water station with plastic bottles on each level. A great idea and definitely will be saving me a few dollars during my stay in Boston which is quite warm at the moment. After checking in, I went straight to the ... read more

So a better day dawned on Chicago with no rain, less wind and slightly warmer temperatures. Since it was last full day in the windy city I had to get out and about and see things before the weather changed for the worse. I made the trek out to the Buckingham fountain which was a few blocks south of the cloud gate. It was early but there was already a crowd at the cloud gate! The Buckingham fountain is a BIG fountain in the middle of a park and with the Chicago cityscape as it's backdrop, the fountain was quite impressive. From there I walked along the shoreline of Michigan Lake which seemed really calm given its proximity to the city. The water looked quite clean and since it was a clear day, the horizon was ... read more

I heard a quote this morning on local breakfast television - 'hold onto your small children today folks' and I can safely say it was sound advice. It was very likely that the wind would have picked up small children today or at the very least knock them off their feet. I saw people being pushed off course throughout downtown. Add some rain and I had the most miserable weather day I can recall for a long time. The fog was again present and the tops of the sky scrapers were not visible. To top it off, the temperature never got over 45F (7C) all day and it was actually colder due to the wind chill. I managed to brave the elements and make it to Millennium Park and the Cloud Gate which is the funky ... read more

After a slight flight delay due to bad weather in Chicago, I finally got to the Windy city at around 5pm. I have found the most stress free way of entering the United States. I know Canada has customs pre clearance with the States but it was certainly painless in Montreal due to the relatively small number of passengers. There were quite a few flights to the States from Montreal but they were all on smaller jets, less than 100 passengers each. My flight ended up being on a 50 seat CRJ120/200 which was quite smooth although the plane was rocking just before hitting the tarmac in Chicago. Once disembarking, I had my checked baggage within 5 minutes and was on the subway to downtown within 10 minutes. Now that is efficient and so after a ... read more

Had a pretty lazy day in Montreal today and I'd like to blame the miserable weather this morning. It was stop / start rain and windy so I had my usual morning coffee before killing a bit of time back at the hotel. Decided to trek up St. Laurent as soon as I saw a break in the weather to find Schartz's Deli. This deli has been open for more than 80 years specialising in smoked meats and they refuse to open up other shops despite massive queues out the door during busy periods. It was quite a trek out there from my hotel so I was looking forward to having a meaty sandwich for brunch. Thankfully it was still pretty empty when I got there as it was only 10:30am and I got my smoked ... read more

So I arrived in raining Montreal yesterday from Toronto aboard VIA Rail and it was already 6pm by the time I checked in. Went for a quick walk around St Catherine's which was filled with young people and transients. This must be the party street for Montreal, plenty of bars, strip clubs and eateries. I ended up eating Korean hotpot for dinner as it was cold and miserable and just what I needed after a day of transit. I have to admit, rail travel is so relaxing despite the longer journey times. I was in economy class this time and there must have been about 70 people in the carriage yet everyone had plenty of room and the snack trolley was constantly doing the rounds. I found a pub to watch the Bulls play the Heat ... read more
