So today I left the United States for a sojourn into Canada and have arrived in Vancouver. I decided to catch a train from Seattle into Vancouver and it has got to be one of most relaxing ways to travel. For $49 I got a business class ticket and the carriage only had about 20 seats and it was very spaced out with plenty of room for people and baggage. The best thing about traveling by rail is that you avoid all the TSA queues at the airport. The Amtrak service I was on also had free wi-fi for the duration of the trip which is a good added bonus. Like I mentioned earlier, it was definitely a relaxing transit and the 4 hour duration didn't feel long at all and before I knew it we ... read more

So today was my full day in Seattle and my first port of call was the Pike Place Markets which is definitely catered towards tourists as the seafood prices were a little extravagant compared to what you could get from the supermarkets here. I ventured throughout the market and saw plenty of produce along with arts and crafts but the most notable stall was the one selling flavoured dried pastas. They had a dark chocolate pasta which would have been good for a creative dessert dish if you like cooking. My next stop was the North Face store to buy a cold climate jacket and ended up getting a windproof soft shell which will help me in Canada. It was only $140 which is a bargain for the quality of it. Decided to drop off my ... read more

Said goodbye to L.A this morning in what turned out to be a rather painful process. I gave myself 3 hours for a domestic flight which is ridiculous amount of time. Got to T3 and the queue for all Alaskan domestic flights was out the door and went for about 100 metres along the sidewalk. After what seemed like an eternity I was able to get my boarding pass and check my bag in. Then had to line up all over again to go past the TSA security check point. This actually moved faster than I remember from my trip last year. So by the time I got through all that I only had an hour to wait which isn't long at all. Flight was extremely smooth and I was able to get a little shut ... read more

Well it is my last day in L.A and didn't do anything terribly exciting. Woke up and left quite early which allowed me to get to Santa Monica by 9am and it was a pretty quick run in with little traffic on a Saturday morning. Parked in one of the Santa Monica parking stations which have heaps of spots and is free for the fist 2 hours and only a $1 for every hour after which I believe is quite reasonable for a major tourist destination. The Santa Monica farmer's market is located on Arizona Ave between 2nd St and the 3rd St Promenade. It was already quite busy when I got there and there was certainly a good variety of produce and I have to say if I lived here I would be visiting whenever ... read more

Pretty relaxing day in a slightly cooler Los Angeles today. My initial plan was to go check out the Griffith Observatory but I probably should have done that a few days ago when the skies were clear. L.A was covered in fog today and will remain so for next few days. As I was heading north from LAX, I decided to have brunch at the L.A farmer's market which is next to the Grove shopping mall. I know this farmers market is rather commercialised and very popular with tourists but I couldn't help myself. It was pretty early so parking and getting a table wasn't a problem so I was able to have a smokey beef brisket roll and coleslaw in a relaxed manner. Last time I came here it was in the middle of the ... read more

With today being the 5th of May, it is Cinco de Mayo a Mexican day to celebrate their heritage and pride and the tradition dates back to the American Civil War. As Los Angeles has such a big population of Mexicans, this was always going to be a pretty entertaining day. LAX is actually quite far from downtown and I wasn't willing to drive all the way in there so I decided to drive to Hollywood and park my car there before catching the red line metro into Downtown. $6 got me an all day pass which I assume includes the metro buses too? Anyhows, the subway takes around 15 minutes to get into the centre of downtown and is a pretty easy ride. I did some wandering around historic downtown, checking out the Angel's Flight ... read more

Today was spent down in Orange County and started with brunch at a bowl of decent Pho noodles in Little Saigon at Pho 79. I found this joint on yelp.com and it had the highest number of positive reviews. It wasn't the best I had but it was certainly decent and would keep me going until dinner. Next I cruised around Little Saigon checking out some of the malls and massive supermarkets. They are on a monster scaled compared with anything we do have in Australia. Next I visited my old high school friend Mimi who moved to the States during year 10. She is now a dentist with her own modern practice at a prime location. I have to say that I do feel pride to see her success. After bidding her farewell until dinner, ... read more

Well it's 9pm LA local time and I am ready for bed .... the 3rd of May has been a VERY long day. Started in Sydney Australia and finished in LA USA! V Australia flight left Sydney at 10:45am local and arrived at LAX at 6:45am after a pretty smooth 14hr flight. I was very impressed with the state of V's Boeing 777-ER aircraft, clean and very modern mood lighting which changed colours throughout the flight. The service of the crew was also commendable although the food quality had a little to be desired albeit very plentiful. The biggest problem of the flight was the queue for US border control and customs. The lines were out of control and the staff were unable to cope as flight after flight kept arriving with a minimum 150 people ... read more

Well on the eve of my great America and Canada adventure - the most talked about thing across the world right now is the death of Osama Bin Laden. US President Barrack Obama did a televised press release describing the events that had transpired the past few months which led to the attack on Osama and his subsequent death. The press release was probably broad casted live right around the world. There have been big celebrations in the States especially in New York City at the site of the former World Trade Centre. Hopefully with these developments US Customs won't be any more painful than useful to transit! Well my bags are packed and hopefully I have enough room to bring back plenty of goodies! A lot of the clothes I have packed can be worned, ... read more

It hit as I woke up this morning that today was my last day in the United States, the holiday had come to a conclusion. The feeling was definitely sobering as I felt I could easily spend much more time here. As I was left to my own devices today, I did my morning coffee ritual and went back upstairs to pack up my luggage. My large backpack and new carry-on luggage were pretty much full to the brim. I checked out after 10am and left my luggage at the hotel where I had organised a shuttle to pick me up at 7pm to get me to SFO for the 11:10pm flight back to Sydney. The girl at the hotel booking desk was real friendly and I spent almost half an hour chatting to her about ... read more
