My conclusion for the day : Toronto is a very pedestrian friendly city. I basically got to all corners of central Toronto on foot today and would have racked up many kilometres. I am glad I am traveling solo as I don't think many people I know could've kept up with me today. Started off early this morning and went straight down to St Lawrence Markets which is a fresh produce market. As it was Saturday morning, they also had the farmer's market across the road. This was actually indoors and had quite a few decent stalls. However, I was mightily impressed with St Lawrence and would definitely visit here whenever I wanted to cook anything. The quality of meats, vegetables and seafood was spectacular and the prices were good too. We are so deprived in ... read more

Woke up this morning to find the Niagara Falls completely blanketed by fog. It was near impossible to see anything through the thick fog/mist. After my daily morning Starbucks coffee I checked out and went back down to the falls via the incline railway which saved me a good 20 minute walk around the long way. Decided to be a tourist and did the Journey Behind The Falls which takes you through some man made rock tunnels directly behind the horseshoe falls. It gives you a closeup of the might and fury of the falls and the spray is pretty strong which means you get soaked and hence the supplied ponchos. It was a quick 10 minute attraction and next I walked along the walkway all the way down to Clifton Hill which definitely an area ... read more

Well I have left mountain Canada and flew from Edmonton this morning to Toronto and I am currently at Niagara Falls. Edmonton airport isn't overly hectic and took me about 40 minutes to get there in the morning peak. Driving around Edmonton lately I have noticed that the government is spending HEAPS of money on road infrastructure. The number of new lanes, bridges and extensions to their freeways is staggering and contrasts with the stagnant nature of our roads back home. For only a city of roughly 750,000 they certainly have big ring roads and freeways, they can't help the layout of their downtown but get away from the city centre and the roads improve dramatically. Checking in was pretty easy and the line for security was pretty organised, plenty of people but there was decent ... read more

So after visiting West Edmonton Mall (WEM) last night, this morning I had plenty of time to wait for the morning rush to finish before making my way into downtown Edmonton. Roads are a little different and after a few meandering loops, I ended up climbing into downtown which is located atop a hill overlooking the river. I found a parking station which was $14 daily max which is pretty good for a business day right in the centre of town. The parking station is connected to the City Centre shopping complex which is a linked mall with overhead walkways. It is not a single mall, but looks like one owner has bought out a bunch of smaller malls and linked them all together to make the City Centre. Probably a good idea in the cold ... read more

So this morning I bid farewell to the Canadian Rockies and it wasn't a nice very nice morning. Was cold and wet in Jasper so I was happy to get away. Went for a coffee run at Bear's Paw Bakery and did take out this time and this server made a much better coffee than yesterday's server. The past 4 days in the heart of the Rockies has been quite uplifting for me. Some majestic scenery, the peace and tranquility and the friendliness of everybody I met meant it has been an invigorating few days and I can honestly say that my mind has been completely worry free. i killed a bit of time back in the hotel as I didn't want to leave too early as it was only about 3 hours to Edmonton and ... read more

Well today was spent around the vicinity of Jasper and after sleeping in, I went to Bears Paw bakery for a fresh Apple Danish and coffee. Danish was superb, the coffee not so. This place is very popular with locals and there are 2 branches only 3 blocks from each other! I made my way to the site of the Jasper Tramway and contemplated going up but the Aussie working there advised me not to as the clouds were rolling in and I wouldn't be able to see much. I actually got a decent view of Jasper township from the base station. Next I decided to check out Fairmont Jasper Lodge and saw that it was a rich person's bungalow accommodation. Lots of older wealthy people was all I saw and it was certainly quiet and ... read more

So I have arrived in Jasper, a much smaller and less touristy town than Banff. Jasper township is the hub for the Jasper national park which seems a little out of the way for most tourists who come out to Banff from Calgary and disappear back out of the rockies. Jasper is only about 250km from Banff and it is a very rewarding drive up the Icefields Parkway. There are many spectacular scenic viewpoints and mini hikes along the way. I have to say that there are much more vantage points if you drove south from Jasper to Banff. The majority of the lakes are still frozen and won't be melted for at least another 2 months. So if you like seeing water instead of ice, then July and August would be the time to visit ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Banff May 14th 2011

I don't think words can describe the majestic scenery I have seen today around Banff and down the road at Lake Louise. Even for somebody like me who isn't much a nature kind of person, I have been left astounded by the beauty of the Canadian Rockies. The extremely rough terrain also makes me appreciate human resourcefulness, how they managed to build roads, railways and power lines into such a isolated and rugged part of the world is just amazing. Before leaving Banff this morning, I went past Surprise Corner lookout which gives you a direct view of Banff Fairmont Springs hotel. A huge hotel built in the late 1800's by Canadian Pacific Rail to attract wealthy folk to come out here and holiday while using their trains. It has prime real estate with great views ... read more

So today was my drive from Vancouver to Banff, some 860km by car! To say that it was thoroughly enjoyable is an understatement. I left at about 6:30am and arrived in Banff at 4pm local which would have been 3pm Vancouver time. That's pretty good progress and it is a testimony to the quality of the roads considering the majority of it was through mountainous terrain. The Canadians have certainly spent much money and labour in making the Trans-Canada highway viable, along with the rail line that follows it. I was carving my way through the rockies and at no stage was I forced to slow down to under 80kmph, instead of following cliff faces - they just built bridges and tunnels! The time passed pretty quickly as I was in the zone, had the Ipod ... read more

Well what can I say, Wednesday was a miserable day weather wise and I couldn't do much in the constant rain. Went to Wal-mart to buy more socks, more water and an umbrella. Those that know me know that I have not owned an umbrella for more than 15 years but I had no choice if I wanted to get out of the hotel yesterday in Vancouver. I ended up catching up on sleep, watching NBA at the pub across the road and having a few drinks. That's about it. This morning dawned nice and dry, so after my morning coffee I jumped in the car and was at Capilano Suspension Bridge before 10am. There were already plenty of tourists there and the entry fee was about $33 + another $5 for parking which I think ... read more
