Our bumpy camper van adventure came to an end in Cairns. We returned the camper and picked up a mini-van to take us through the rest of our trip (a Toyota Turago). We headed out of town towards Mission Beach. When we arrived at Mission Beach, it was getting dark (about 6:00 pm). So, we checked in at the cabin at a caravan park and left for town to find some dinner and a spot to connect to the internet. Dinner - successful: delicious pizza. Internet, not successful: Only 2 computers were available and they were both being used. Next morning, we started the long drive to Airlie beach. On the way, we passed through Ayr, Australia. It is a lot bigger than our Ayr, and has a 24 hour McDonalds too. The apartment we stayed ... read more

April 1 Port Douglas. Rolled in at 7:30 and set up camp for the night. April 2 Up early to catch the bus to the Wavelength Reef Boat. The bus driver/marine biologist/photographer/host named Fluffy kept us entertained on the ride. When we got to the dock, we all got lycra dive suits to protect us from jellyfish stings and sun (you don't have to put on too much sunscreen that harms the coral). Adam was eager to put on his suit and put it on immediately. He wore it for the entire 1 hour 45 minute ride to the first spot. We had to stay in groups of at least 2 during the snorkeling. We all swam together at the first site. Before getting in the water, there was a huge wrasse fish behind the boat. ... read more

Mar 31 An early rise at the Innot hot springs. Before breakfast, we decided to take a morning dip. The water was really warm (38 Degrees). Dad went into the ultra-hot 44 degrees pool. When he came out, he was steaming and was totally red below his shoulders (see picture). There was a river running near the campsite. We went down to check it out. In some places, the water was so hot, we couldn't put our hands into it. There was a dead frog and a dead fish because the water was so hot. The way to Undara Park didn't feel as bumpy or windy. There were many dead animals on the roads heading to the Outback. Undara is a volcano. The unique feature about the volcano is that it made tunnels called Lava Tubes. ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cape Tribulation April 1st 2009

4 and a half hours from Undara Park, we arrived at Cape Tribulation in the Daintree rain forest. We chose to observe the rain forest from a higher point of view. It started by getting harnessed up. Then we hiked up a mountain trail to the first platform. Jonathan (aka Rambo) was the first victim. Mom (aka Paris Hilton) and Adam (Batman) followed closely behind. The guides for this experience were quite the characters and were always reassuring (not). With comments like the cables usually don't break or yelling "wait!" after a person was launched 20 meters above the jungle floor, kept the mood lively and light. After the first flight, we confident on the ropes. We met some fellow Canadians from Alberta that showed us how to lick green ant's butts for vitamin 'C'. Weird...but ... read more

March 30 Today we left Palm Cove. Before we went, the very nice hotel people gave us 3 pens and a sleeping bag so we could stay in camps when we continued to travel. We went to get the camper van. It took a very very long time to pick up the camper, MORE THAN 2 HOURS! When we finally got the van, it was larger than we expected. The next stop on the route was the Innot Hot Springs. The journey was an exciting experience. It was 3 hours of bumpity-bump and twisting and turning (see the picture of the map). It was hard to read or even play a video game (gasp). The scenery was nice though. It was dark when we arrived at Innot. We pulled into a local bar to get directions ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Palm Cove March 28th 2009

We took to relaxing for the morning and went for a swim in the pool. In the afternoon, we headed to Hartley's Crocodile Experience for an adventure. There were freshwater and saltwater crocs and other wildlife. There was also a boat ride into croc infested waters. They fed the crocs right beside the boat. It was very exciting. We also learned a lot about Koalas and got to pet one. Tomorrow, we will get a camper van and try a new adventure. ... read more

This morning, we got up at 4:30 to get a flight to Cairns. We (Jonathan and Adam) did home work for most of the flight. When we landed, we rented a car and headed to the nearest McDonalds to get on the internet and find a place to stay. An apartment in Palm Cove looked like a nice place to stay. On the way to Palm Cove, we stopped at an Aboriginal Culture Centre. We learned abut their beliefs and traditions. They taught us a traditional dance and how to make fire with 2 sticks. We also learned how to throw a boomerang and throw a spear. Mom and Dad bought a Didgerie Doo (which we will play in class when we get back). A wise Aboriginal man taught us how to play the Didgerie Doo ... read more

Hello back at home, We got out of Melbourne yesterday heading towards Philip island. Along the way we saw many different types of birds. When we finally got to Philip island we stayed at a very nice cabin. Yesterday night we saw fairy penguins come ashore in groups. Today we went to the koala conservatory. There were Koala bears, Wallabys and many types of birds. Heading back to Melbourne for the night to find a hotel near the airport. Leaving for Cairns tomorrow morning. Right now I'm typing in a McDonalds (in Australia, McDonalds have built in Cafe's with free internet. That is now a favourite with us). ... read more

We finally made it. After 30 hours in planes, we are very tired and haven't gotten used to the time change (15 hours ahead of Ayr). About 10 hours of sleep on the way here. In Japan, we didn't have much time to sight-see. We tried some different foods though. Our favourite was Udon (Japanese noodle soup). We only saw the airport in Singapore, but the flight was terrific. The service was great and each person had a TV that could play video games. After we arrived in Melbourne, we were excited about driving on the left side of the road. We got honked at 5 times on the way to the Hotel. We walked around town and went to the Melbourne Aquarium. We saw sharks getting fed by scuba-divers. And there were lots of odd ... read more

A change of plans... Hi everyone. We were going to go from Detroit to Tokyo to Malaysia and then to Australia. But when we were on the way to Tokyo, there was an airplane crash at the airport we were supposed to land at. So, we rerouted to Sapporo, refuelled and stayed there for about an hour. We stayed in the plane. Then we went to Osaka, which is where we are now. Now our new course is to go from Osaka to Singapore China and then to Australia. We'll send another update from Australia. Adam & Jonathan... read more
