Europe » Hungary » Central Hungary » Budapest August 24th 2006

Geo: 47.3555, 18.9577Back to the market. Had an apple pastry - looked great but was mediocre (strudel-like). Cruised to the town of Szentendre. Saw a nude sunbather on the banks of the Danube. Cool because she was pretty hot. Usually nude sunbathers are less than desirable.Upon arrival - had a langos. Sausage this time - wrapped in dough and fried like a corn dog. Greasy - oil shot out all over my shorts. The town is kitsch-y - lame with tons of souvenir shops. I wanted to leave almost immediately after arriving. Went to the marzipan museum - also lame, but cool in a twisted kind of way. Skipped the wine museum - maybe a mistake as 700 forints gets you 10 samples plus appetizers. Of course, I may have ended up falling in the Danube ... read more

Europe » Hungary » Central Hungary » Budapest August 23rd 2006

Geo: 47.3555, 18.9577Bought some cheese, meat, bread, juice, yogurt, etc. yesterday for breakfast for my time in Budapest. The plain Activia brand yogurt was 4 for 265 Forints (sale) - no wonder, because it tastes like crap! Went to the Museum of Fine Arts - free entrance and tour (The Spanish Gallery). Overall, it was OK. It was very unique because many European museums are former palaces and residences, but this is a purpose built museum. Different wings have different architectural styles to match the type of art they house (i.e. - renaissance style for renaissance art, etc.). Sadly, the renaissance wing was closed. But there were many different types of art to see, still - sculptures, Egyptian antiquities, etc. A decent little museum. Saw some "El Greco" paintings in the Spanish gallery. He has a ... read more

Europe » Hungary » Central Hungary » Budapest August 22nd 2006

Geo: 47.3555, 18.9577Ran into Chuck and Eileen on the train to Budapest. Very nice people. We compared notes (they didn't make the mistake that I did and actually went with the Rick Steves guidebook). I am very disappointed with the "Let's Go" guide I have. The pricing is out to lunch (2 or 3 years old?), important information is lacking, and the recommendations are hit or miss.Supposedly the "highly-recommended" hostel in Budapest had laundry - nope. Kind of dumpy, too. I wonder if there are kickbacks involved? Met an Aussie girl named Alanna at the hostel. We went to the market together. Great - lots of produce and baked goods. Had a langos - fried pancake topped w/ cheese, cream, and garlic ... so fatty and so good!!! Alanna bought some mushrooms (chanterelles, I think). Quite ... read more

Europe » Hungary » Northern Hungary » Eger August 21st 2006

Geo: 47.855, 20.0221Met a senior couple getting off the train in Fusezabony (Chuck and Eileen, from Cali). Could instantly tell they were fans of "Rick Steves". We missed our connection to Eger, but luckily for us there were many other connections. Found a hostel in Eger (university dorm rented out for the summer). Luxurious! 2 beds in the huge room, private bath, fridge, microwave ... ended up being only me in there. Had a shower and munched on some dried fruit for breakfast. Off to the cathedral - very unique exterior, almost wouldn't know that it was a cathedral. Listened to an organ concert - 2 euros well spent. The opening song was so cliched - it's that organ song you always hear in cheesy haunted-house type movies. Very powerful sound - you could feel the ... read more

Europe » Poland » Lesser Poland » Kraków August 20th 2006

Geo: 49.9762, 19.9433Sorry for the terrible title - Travelpod limits the number of characters you can have in the title. C'est la vie! Some guy at the hostel was proposing to one of the hostel workers this morning as a joke (half joke). What a fool! Why would you do that? At least propose to Magda, the hot one, like some other guy did. He was a bit of a loser, too. I won't name names, but I can describe him - tall, skinny, dark dude, with an Afro, and of unknown ethnic origins. Kept babbling about some Spanish girl, too. People like him should be shot!Off to the Jewish quarter - I needed a hair cut but nothing was open. Wanted to use the internet - same thing. Saw a local market and passed the time ... read more

Europe » Poland » Lesser Poland » Kraków August 19th 2006

Geo: 49.9762, 19.9433My ankle felt great this morning. I had somehow injured my achilles the day before and was hobbling all over the Auschwitz sites. I skipped the crappy hostel breakfast and bought a cheese bun and yogurt drink instead. Jagiellonian - the 3rd oldest university in Europe. Copernicus once studied here. Nothing terribly interesting. A big market was on at the Rynek. Mostly for tourists but still fun to browse. Krakow history museum - free on Saturdays but a special exhibit required payment. No thanks! A concert stage was set up on the Rynek - not sure what it was as I don't speak Polish! National museum - free! Basically a re-creation of traditional Polish homes. Yawn ..... too bad I couldn't nap on the beds that were on display.Had a steak at an outdoor ... read more

Europe » Poland » Lesser Poland » Auschwitz August 18th 2006

Geo: 49.7031, 19.6148Auschwitz ... in all honesty, I didn't really want to go because I wasn't sure how I would react. But at the same time, I felt compelled to go. You can't imagine what these places were like unless you see them in person. Even then, you can't fully imagine how horrific life must've been like here. Almost 1,000,000 people were killed here. That's only at the Auschwitz sites. It wasn't just a concentration camp (i.e. - work camp) - it was also an extermination camp. Some people were sent directly to the gas chambers as they got off the trains. Warehouses were used to store the belongings of people that were sent here. These were actually nicknamed "Canada I" and "Canada II" by the first Polish prisoners that were kept here. Apparently they had ... read more

Europe » Poland » Lesser Poland » Kraków August 17th 2006

Geo: 50.0272, 20.0221Shared a sleeper compartment with Haydn (Vancouver) and Steve (Aussie). Both living in Belfast. Not much sleep on the train - I was very tired as I arrived at 5:44. It took forever to get out of the train station. There was loads of construction going on and we couldn't figure out where to go. Of course, having only a few hours sleep probably contributed to our confusion and stupidity. I couldn't figure out which tram to take to the hostel so I walked instead. The hostel is interesting, to say the least. Breakfast is only bread and jam. Crappy. I had read in the guidebook that Nathan's Villa Hostel employs "amateur models", jokingly. But holy crap - the girl at the reception (I think her name was Magda) was one of the most ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Prague August 16th 2006

Geo: 50.0878, 14.4205Breakfast - ham and cheese omelet, weak coffee and some buns. Decent, but it was extra as breakfast was not included. Off to the castle for a tour - only OK, nothing special. The highlight was the cute tour guide who kept apologizing for her English. Bought some camembert, bread, bananas, and chocolate for lunch. Ate it on the bus back to Prague. Camembert was horrible - it had a strange flavour and was hard/dry in the middle. Yech. Bread was OK - multigrain. The bus ride was rather uneventful. South Prague looks like it is in the midst of a rejuvenation. Shiny new buildings - Dell, Accenture, Sony, Honeywell all have new offices there. There also was a brand new shopping centre. Had some Budweiser (the real Czech one) Budvar beer. Not that ... read more

Geo: 49.3941, 14.3061Could've caught an early train to Cesky Krumlov but I wanted to chat with Naoual a little bit more (pathetic, I know!). Ended up getting to Cesky very late (11:00 bus did not exist as it turns out ... I suspect the ticket guy was just being an ass though). Got to Cesky Budejovice 16:30 ... thought I was going to miss the connection to Cesky Krumlov (more than 20 minutes late). Luckily, the train was still sitting there. Met Jay from California - we were both dazed and confused at the train station. We scrambled to make the connection. We met a guy named Kabeer on the train .. what a story this guy has got! Apparently he has been traveling a lot for the past 10 years. Not because he likes it ... read more
