Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice August 4th 2006

Geo: 45.3932, 12.2299For once, a semi-decent hostel breakfast. Cheese! Yes!!! Off to the train station. Sat with an elderly Israeli couple and a Serb guy named Nikola. Very interesting talking to him. A crash course in Yugoslavian history (at least, the break-up portion - but aren't the break-ups always the juiciest parts?). If I get a chance I'll meet up with him in Serbia. Ate a store-bought seafood risotto on the train. It was much better last night. Gross bits of olives .... Got to Venice - cool! Weather is nice ... not nearly as hot as other places I've been so far. Piazza San Marco was packed. Half of the square was cut off for some concert tonight, making it worse than normal. Doge's palace - incredible art on display. The largest oil painting in ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lombardy » Milan August 3rd 2006

Geo: 45.3374, 9.11564Rained all night and this morning. I hoped to justify the 40 Euro room by sitting on the deck all night/morning but no luck. Checked out and walked to town ... much better hiking down than it was hiking all the way up yesterday. Walked past a gourmet deli .....all sorts of hot pasta and rice dishes. Where was this last night? Would've been a great and relatively cheap meal. I've been trying to speak some Italian with very little success. I speak it with a bizarre mix of English/Spanish/French in my accent. At the Como train station I bought a fruit cup from a vending machine ... apple sauce! Wonder if I bought baby food by accident ... it tasted like crap. Got to Milan and used the internet for awhile and caught ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lombardy » Menaggio August 2nd 2006

Geo: 46.0031, 9.54927Had a decent sleep. Weather is quite cool in Lake Como, I actually needed sheets last night! Bunkmate took forever shaving ... I can mow my lawn in less time. Had breakfast with Paul, a South African guy. He's also traveling for 3 months and is currently unemployed. Beautiful views from hostel. Off to Bellaggio. Walked for 3 hours. Bellissima! Had a nectarine ... would've been quite tasty had it been ripe. Later had a picnic on the lake. Exactly what I had eaten yesterday, but at a different spot. Equally beautiful. Had an excellent coconut gelato ... I think the secret ingredient is Coppertone suntan lotion - it smelled just like it!Getting increasingly hard to eat gelato as my goatee grows ... gelato all over the place. I am hoping that Italian women ... read more

Europe » Italy August 1st 2006

Geo: 46.0031, 9.54927Hardly slept as it was strangely quiet in the room. I was the only one in the dorm - until midnight when a french couple and their 2 daughters moved in and woke me up. Cant complain too much as the daughters were very pretty. Aaahhh ... to be 5 years younger .... luckily, I quickly was able to pull my sheets up as I was wearing only undies (it's hot at night !!!!) Did I mention that Trenitalia sucks? The internet showed a 9:00 train to Lake Como. I showed up and was told no. No biggie, so I arrive an hour later. But I could've had another hour of sleep.Maybe it was better anyway since I had one less connection to miss due to Trenitalia's horrid performance. Had time so I walked ... read more

Europe » Italy July 31st 2006

Geo: 44.1629, 9.7201Very tired, did not sleep well. Perhaps eating too much starch in Italy? It feels only like yesterday that I started this trip though it´s been more than 2 weeks. Today is for scoping out the 5 towns and then I will decide where to go tomorrow. Manarola - not much there. Some rocky coves. Hiked the Via Dell´amore. Nice, but over-rated. Pure cheese - lovers paint the walls of the tunnel with graffiti professing their undying love. There was even an accordion player doing his thing. The only thing cheesier than that? Trekking halfway around the world to Spain to find someone that you only spoke to for 15 minutes the year before! Can you imagine if someone was crazy enough to do something like that????Riomaggiore - not much there either. Had a ... read more

Europe » Italy » Liguria » Levanto July 30th 2006

Geo: 44.4092, 9.11564Off to catch a train for Levanto. Had a strudel for breakfast (possibly contained grapes?). Good crust, but a little burned. Sat and ate in a park. Trenitalia sucks - missed my connection in Genoa (trains are always late). Had a ham and cheese sandwich near the station - pretty bad and pricey. Thought that I was smart by walking away from the station to buy food but it turned out that the station cafeteria was the same price but had a much better selection and better quality. Hotter in Genoa than Turin. Even hotter in Levanto. I killed 2 hours waiting for the hostel to open. Ate a great peach sorbet in the park. I must say that there are lots of beautiful women on the beach here. Still not quite Spanish quality, ... read more

Europe » Italy July 29th 2006

Geo: 44.908, 7.99871I missed the first train to Ventimiglia - the lineup at the ticket office was incredibly slow. I should´ve booked ahead. Almost missed the 2nd train - I thought that it left at 10:40, not 10:30. Just made it on. Grabbed lunch at a supermarket during the changeover. Strazzapreti alla rustica (pasta salad with tuna, olives, pickled onions, bell peppers, sundried tomatoes) and foccaccia podorini (bread with herbs and tomatoes). Bread was good, pasta mediocre. Lunch was quick, cheap, and dirty (just like me!). Boring train ride to Turin; wished that I had an Ipod.Arrived in Turin; called hostel but they were full. Wandered around looking for a hotel/private room. A guy in an electronics store (Marco) walked up to me and asked if I needed help. He explained that the private room advertised ... read more

Europe » France July 28th 2006

Geo: 43.7325, 7.41891Off to Monaco today! Grabbed the receipt from the machine at the train station thinking it was the ticket. Some guy chased me down with the ticket, luckily. Sat next to a lady from Boston on a Euro cruise. Monaco is hot, but breezier than Nice. Cathedral - had a temporary exhibit of photos of people smiling (from all over the world). Jardin St. Martin - beautiful, cool, breezy, shady. Had a picnic at Place St. Devote. For all you Formula 1 fans, it´s the St. Devote corner. Camembert, salami, baguette. Possibly the best baguette I´ve ever had ... loved it so much I proposed to it. Perhaps it was heat-induced dementia, but I swear it giggled and replied "I will have to ask my boyfriend first." (in a Spanish accent, no less!)Weather became ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Nice July 27th 2006

Geo: 43.341, 6.7898Ate breaky at hotel. Decent croissant, but I've yet to have an incredible one like those in Paris. It was my first time using sheets in a week last night. It gets very humid in the basement but does get cold late at night.Walked down Promenade des Anglais towards the Chateau. Nice views at the top, but over-rated (and hot!) Back down to Vieux Ville. Saw a restaurant that had hoses embedded in their patio umbrellas. Every so often they spray a mist on the patrons. Nice idea for a hot place like this. Just found out that Placebo was in town last night. Gaaahhh! If I would´ve known ... of course, who knows if I could´ve gotten a ticket. Snacked on a tarte blette. Not bad, but was disappointed as I thought it ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Nice July 26th 2006

Geo: 43.341, 6.7898Had a crappy hostel breakfast and off to the train station. Went through a market - mostly a local thing for day to day needs, but also a cool food section. Bought a cheap croissant - crap! Like a glorified bun. Should've went for the pricier one. They had rotisserie chickens going ... looked amazing! Sausages too ... they kept potatoes and onions cooking at the bottom to catch all the juices. Smelled heavenly. Got to Marseille - wanted to ditch my backpack and walk around but couldn't find a place for it. Still walked a bit, but not as much as I wanted to. Looks neat - maybe will stop here next year. Here´s a shot of the steps from the train station: And what did I see on these steps ... ... read more
