I work to pay the bills, I work overtime to travel. I want to see as much of the world as possible. I like cruises as they give a glimpse of different places with a lot of relaxation, but then i can visit the place and really get to know the country and the culture in depth. My next trip is Sept,2008 to Turkey for 3wk. I like to travel solo, which I am doing this trip. I am going to be looking for ideas for next trip as soon as I return from this trip!

Well, today was my last day in Turkey. It has been an amazing, awesome, wonderful, exhausting and fabulous trip. I wouldn't have missed it for anything! Traveling solo has made me rely on myself even more than living alone. Also had to rely on the kindness of strangers more than normal. But thats the great thing about Turkey; theres plenty of kindness to go around. OK, today, I wandered around! I started by going to the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts. There is a fantastic ethnographic exhibit that I had read about and wanted to see. I am very glad I did. For me, seeing the way the people had actually lived was one of the highlights of the trip. I highl recommend this museum. The carpets and other displays were also very good. All ... read more

Well, my trip is almost over and I haven't finished my blogs! Sorry I kinda got blogged down. Travel plans made my timing very hard to get this done. Anyways, since I last posted anything I have visited several wonderful sites. I spent time at Pamukkale, Aphrodisias, Ephesus, Artemis Temple, Pergamum and now am back in Istanbul for a couple of days before returning home. I drove my rental car from Fethiye to Pamukkale and spent a day there visitng ruins in the rain. Then onto Selcuk, a lovely little village right outside of Ephesus. Ephesus is magnificent and is where the Celsius Library can be found. Being a library fan, I really enjoyed this site. The history is amazing, all of these places are far older than our country is. So much of what ... read more

Hi all, I was unable to keep a good connection last night for long enough to enter my blog notes. Anyways, I am in Fethiye which is also Telmessos and the site of the book that started this whole trip for me. I read or actually listened to BIRDS WITHOUT WINGS on cd in my car and was so fascinated by the descriptions of the place that I decided I had to check this out. So, almost 2yrs later, here I am. In Telmessos! Even if you are not interested in visiting here, I highly recommend this book, the author also wrote CAPTAIN CORELLI'S MANDOLIN. (sp?). I spent 8hrs yesterday on a boat trip to the 12 Islands, actually stopped at 4, just cruised past the others. It was a breezy warm day, in the 80"s. ... read more

These past couple of days have been so lazy, didn't have much to write about. Hard to say more about lying on the beach or around the pool than just that. However, I did get about 1oo mozzie bites on my legs the first nite in Cirali, didn't feel them at all until the itching started. Kept me awake haldf the nite. Mozzie is the British term and I do believe I will be quite British speaking by the time I return home. I am now calling them tomaaatoes rather than tomatoes, saying that was a lovely lunch, the wine was quite lovely and put my jumper in the boot!(jacket in the trunk). I toally relaxed in Cirali and did absolutely nothing worthwhile. I did meet Carrie there, she is the owner of the hotel I ... read more

..well really only in the museum! Its amazing how we all came to be such prudes when our distant ancestors had naked statues around all the time. Its also amazing how good they were at carving and that the work has endured for so long. I visited the Antalya museum today and WOW! Its the best one i have been to. A huge gallery of statues and another of sarcophagai..is that plural for sarcophagus? Plus an exhibit showing how the nomadic tribes lived. Very well done and most of the texts were in several languages, including English. Antalya is a really old city and the old part is kinda like the old part of Istanbul, except less traffic. They still drive crazy here. My hotel is very nice and the food is yummy. IF the chef ... read more

Another great day! this time I hired a private driver/guide. He was a nice man named Adam, at least that is the English version. He spoke pretty good English. I went to the Goreme Open Air Museum first. Lots of walking, hiking, treking, whatever you want to call that exhausting stuff! Many steps again and stooping to get into the caves. But mostly worth it. Saw several more churches with the original frescoes that were painted directly onto the rock face of the cave by the early Christains in hiding. Some of them had the faces defaced; later inhabitants believed that it was bad luck to have faces on pictures indoors. Amazing to think that people lived in these caves, cooked, slept, made love, had children and died and were even buried in the caves. I ... read more

Hi all, what a wonderful day today was! Took a guided tour to an underground village and to a monastery high on the hillside. Both are in caves that were originally inhabited by the Hittites. The history here is so amazing, its hard to comprehend that people lived here in 3000BC!! The cave city was 7 stories down and we went down down down thru dark passages, so narrow many times that you felt the walls on both sides and low enough that even I had to duck. The people who inhabited these caves must have been part mountain goat and very short! Or they had very hard heads. I managed to make it thru with out a heart attack and without falling. I will post some picts, but they were hard to take to really ... read more

HI all, Today is Sunday and I am now in Ankara. I got here late last nite, about 10p after a long bus ride from Safranbolu. I will tell you about Safranbolu first since I didn't have access to internet there. Its a very old town, with many restored buildings that are hundreds of yrs old, I guess most of them about 200, Much older than anything in OHIO. Anyways, its a fascinating village and they have a market on Saturday which I got to visit. And shop at! Lots of produce with tomatoes, corn, peppers, cucumbers, olives, spices, squash, melons, beans, rice, shoes, clothing, souvenirs and just junk. Lots of Turkish peole doing their marketing for the produce too. Of course I had to buy a few things. I had lunch at a tiny place ... read more

HI to all and thanks for all the good luck wishes. Must have worked, made it with no problems and all my luggage! Only problem was getting online. Unable last nite and earlier today. OK, yesterday I arrived at Attaturk airport at a little after 1p here...more like 5am at home. I had slept a little on the plane but not enough. I was able to change my seat after we took off, didn't want to sleep with a strange man. (he was sitting next to me at first). oved to long row that was almost empty. I was met at the airport by a driver with my name on a board. and taken to my hotel. He first took me to the wrong hotel, owned by same company but more expensive and very nice lobbey. ... read more
