When: May 28th-29th 2011 Where: Kananaskis country Highlights: Bow Valley Provincial Park, Elbow Falls Saturday, May 28th: A major system brought a lot of precipitation to southern AB & much of BC(obviously). The weather cleared yesterday evening & we thought we will make use of the rain to see the swollen rivers. We took the road-not-taken towards Bragg Creek. We ventured further without anything specific in mind. A short stop at the visitor center gave us some ideas. The rockies have received so much precipitation this past week that it made no sense to go up to the mountains. They were all covered in snow or muddy/slushy after the rain. Our first stop was at Allen Bill Pond. This apparently is a major picnic site & a popular fishing spot. S got to bring out her ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Lake Louise January 23rd 2011

When: 23rd Jan 2011 Where: Lake Louise, Banff National Park Highlights: First Ice sculpture celebration & sleigh ride It has been a while we had been outdoors. If it was not our laziness, it was the weather. All it took was one mention that an Ice Carving competition was happening in Lake Louise to get us moving. Grateful. The festival happened for 3 days & we were watching the weather closely to decide when to go. But, really! What were we thinking. The place is in the middle of the Rockies. It creates its own weather, ALL the time. Still, logistically Sunday proved to be better. I was surprised that after not being outdoors for a good 3 months, we still had it in us to get up early & get going, in spite of our ... read more

When: 28th Sept - 3rd Oct Where: Yellowknife, Hay River & the drive back to Calgary. Highlights: Aurora, starlit nights, city of Yellowknife & Galaxyland at WEM P.S: Feel free to click on the photos to enlarge them to see the aurora clearly Click url=http://www.travelblog.org/North-America/Canada/Northwest-Territories/Yellowknife/blog-535086.htmlhere for the first few days of this trip. 28th September Shower forecast. We hit the Legislative Assembly for the 10.30 am tour. An intern gave us the 40 minute tour of the Legislative assembly. I learnt so much about the NWT & their way of dealing with things. The building looked very modern(definitely not even close to the one at Edmonton, AB) & took 5 years to build. It incorporates every single detail that NWT is al... read more

North America » Canada » Northwest Territories » Yellowknife September 29th 2010

When: 24th -27th September Where: from Calgary, AB to Yellowknife, NWT Highlight: A roadtrip, the longest so far with the little one. Total Mileage: 1700 km one way Yellowknife is the capital of NorthWest Territories. It is the farthest North one can drive in North West Territories on paved road. I am splitting the entire trip to 2 blogs so I can blog in detail to help someone else make a similar trip. About North West Territories The whole idea of driving up to Yellowknife came as a passing thought. Why don't we do it? Just take the car & drive North. By the way, North fascinates me. Cold intrigues me. I may not be brave or capable enough to survive a -40C, but it sure gives me the chill. Figuratively & literally. This was the ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Kananaskis Country August 14th 2010

When: 14th - 15th August 2010 Where: Peter Lougheed Provincial Park Mileage: 300 km Highlights: Some of the best sights of the Rockies outside the National Parks Saturday, 14th August Leaving late(ie., late for a walk in camp site) we found campsite availabilities in single digits at the Visitor center. Rushing to check in our luck & also wanting to choose the one with showers, we checked almost every campground on the way. And I should say that there are many campgrounds for a Provincial park and every campsite was FULL. We surely did not want to go back home at this point. So, we turned out at Mt.Sorrail campground hoping we would find a spot here as there is a "catch" that "may" turn some people away. And that is the sites are not driveable. ... read more

When: 30th July - 2nd Aug 2010 Where: Waterton Lakes National Park(International Peace partner of Glacier National Park, Montana, USA) Highlights: Bear & big horn sightings, beautiful hikes to alpine lakes, getting caught in thunderstorms, hail & an eventful drive back home. Mileage: 712 km Friday, 30th July Thanks to a geeky husband who was obsessed with getting an iPhone4, we got to leave about 1 hr later than we all were ready. The drive to Waterton Lakes National Park is a good 2.5 hr drive due S towards the US border at Montana. Brilliantly hot weather. Two weeks ago, we had made reservations at Waterton Springs Campground, 3km from the park entrance as the park's Townsite campground was full. At our campsite, we were greeted by mosquitoes & bugs of all shapes & sizes. The ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Banff National Park July 17th 2010

When: 17th-18th July 2010 What: A couple hikes from the Rocky mountain guide book Firsts: hiking with S(& Amma) for 8.6km... Leaving relatively late for a walk-in campsite at Tunnel Mountain, we were pleasantly surprised to find one(& many more) at 10.30am. Turns out the Calgary Stampede was the dampener taking people away from the parks. It was a HOT day! Not the ideal climate to hike, specially at noon. But we were not the only people on the trail. Haven't been to this part of the park, so was excited to be here & Ganesh was more than happy to strike off some hikes from the book. The hike to Sundance canyon starts off at the Cave & Basin area. It can be biked for 3.2km & is a pretty setting for biking, I should ... read more

When: 1st-4th July Where: Jasper National Park Weather: 20C - 3C Mileage: 1000km Highlight: Largest glacier S of Alaska, camping/biking experience, wildlife viewings & general drive along Icefield Parkway Jasper National Park After our very first visit to Banff National Park, the immediate action performed was to reserve a campsite at Jasper for the July1st weekend. Campgrounds fill up fast during long weekends & it is impossible to find a site on such days. The weather painted different colors before our trip. But with our previous experiences, we always knew that no weather is permanent in the mountains. Thursday, 1st July CANADA DAY! There was no sign of such a day as we left home. But I knew there would be later in the evening. There was a little something planne... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Banff National Park June 26th 2010

When: June 26th-27th Where: Lake Louise part of Banff National Park Weather: 17 C - 2 C Highlights: Lake Louise & Moraine Lake We decided on this trip at 6pm on Friday evening. Being unaware of the campground availability situation over the weekend, I made a reservation. I was surprised that anything was still available. It probably was the weather. The low on Sunday morn was to touch 2C. The low temperature in July/August(peak Summer) is 3C. So, there did not seem a point to wait for the weather to get any better. Having said that, camping was our only option. Hotels/even hostels are ridiculously expensive. Saturday, 26th We left a little late around 9.00am & reached Lake Louise around 11.30am. We encountered quite a bit of traffic but no serious bottlenecks. After a brief stop ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Edmonton June 22nd 2010

When: 19th - 21st June Where: Edmonton, the capital city Highights: A lot of biking, walking the WEM & of course the first camping experience in warm weather Weather: 30C - 12C Mileage: 630km Leaving home around 8.30am, we followed the almost straight road, the Deerfoot Trail, N to Edmonton. 299km and 3 hours later, we reached our campground. As expected, S slept most of the way. The campground was almost full. Thankfully I reserved it a day ago. Somewhere along the drive, both of us realized that it was a longer drive than we expected & since we started late, we would do justice if we stayed one more day. So. After setting up camp, we drove right to Fort Edmonton Park. Taking the River Loop Trail, we started our bike jo... read more
