North America » Canada » Alberta » Calgary June 13th 2010

I am not a very big fan of the Sun. But after a week of rain & wind, the clear skies were royally welcomed. The temperature rose to 27C. Since we were at home for the weekend, we decided to test ride our new bikes. I used to take S to Prince's Island park almost everyday when we stayed near the downtown. So, we chose to bike the Bow River Parkway from Pearce Estate Park to Prince's Island Park. Some 5km one way. The shaded trail was very pleasant with views of Bow & Elbow river. S saw the Bow & Elbow rivers, people float down the river, baby gooslings, lots of Bulldozers(courtesy: Calgary's construction), Trains(Canadian Pacific Railroad), Windmill, Fountain, lots of ducks, Goose, one bunny rabbit that got caught in the middle of so many ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Drumheller June 7th 2010

When: 5th - 6th June Where: Drumheller, AB Highlights: Canadian badlands, Hoodoos, Camping, Old towns Mileage: 300 km Weather: 24C - 7C This is the place I wanted to visit when I got to know about the area, even before the Rockies. Desert landscapes always take the cake(to me). I was pretty excited to be here. We have never been East, at all. With the Pacific in the W, we could always never go on all directions when we were in CA. The very fact that I can go in all 4 directions(& actually do it) brings joy in itself. Drumheller was not the first choice. Our plans changed in the 11th hour(it never has, & this totally excites me) as Drumheller seemed a better option to get campsite without reservations.(When was the last time we ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Revelstoke May 22nd 2010

When: Victoria Day long weekend Where: Glacier National Park & Mt.Revelstoke National Park, BC Weather: 19C - 6C Highlights: First camping with little S; first black bear sighting; S touching a squirrel Mileage: ~ 900km With a pretty late start on Saturday, we ended up following a bunch of cars on the road across the Trans-Canada. Fortunately no major traffic bottlenecks despite the heavy construction all through the Rockies. It was a long drive, but with the little one asleep for most of the journey, it was a breeze. Part of the drive, we encountered snow showers & it was a pretty cool site. And not to mention all those bikers(I have no idea where they were going to) riding along the Trans-Canada. People do love the outdoors here & they care not what the weather ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Banff May 15th 2010

When: 15th - 16th May Where: Banff area of Banff National Park Weather: ~20C This probably seems like the obvious choice after settling down in Calgary. To me it was not. But with the weather being cooperative, I said "Yes". Banff, can be extremely crowded & overrated. But today, it was not. The mountains were gorgeous. No other word to explain. The place strangely resembled Whistler(much smaller though) & the town is pretty upscale. And Banff is strategically placed in between those huge mountains. Anywhere you turn heavy mass mountains with sharp pointy tips grace you with their presence. In peak Summer upto 50,000 people visit Banff NP every day! That's like a lot of people. Hell more than Banff can handle, I am sure. And Summer is July- early September When in Ca, I was ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Canmore May 8th 2010

Where: Near Canmore, AB What: A short hike along Heart creek Weather: ~6C So, the sun was finally up, shortly, but nevertheless. I love the clouds here. They seem so close that you can almost touch them. The fierce wind, though not so much loved, is something I look at like I would do a miracle. It should have tremendous power to make such an eerie sound. But, this is something I learnt from my short stay here. Sunshine is precious. If you find an ounce of sunshine, it would be a crime to view it from the insides of your home. Not a day has gone where we did not check the weather before every weekend. The altitude(~4000 ft) & the mountains makes browsing through weather.com seem so lame. With a toddler, I still ... read more

I love Bay Area. It probably felt like home on various levels. But when I left, I did not feel much attachment, at least not yet. I will miss the people, all the loved ones, so much, though. As insane as it sounds, we decided to drive the entire distance from bay area to the middle of Alberta, Canada. A storm was chasing us close all through. It rained & snowed...all in blissful Oregon. Got a chance to spend some quality time with a friend from school. S enjoyed her free time playing with V. Thanks to Anu, we had a short but wonderful vacation in Portland. We will cherish those days. Quite contrary to all our travels, we took very few photos. I've shared those few here. These photos should probably not be here as ... read more

SAN FRANCISCO! The city that accepts you as you are, however you are. It is unique, mystic, romantic, friendly, crazy, hippy, junky, geeky, sporty, happy, magical & of all, lively. I've never seen a sleepy day in this city. Being Ganesh's birthday, we planned to take a day off from packing & ventured out into the city. This was probably our last trip to the city for a long long time. I don't like to say never. We walked some parts of the city where we'd never walked before. And the walk itself was different. Usually, when we are in this big city, we have this rush to see it all. We saw it all(all we could in one day), but with so much enjoyment & contentment. This city has it all. I love San Francisco. ... read more

Where: Coyote Hills Regional Park Hike: The Bayside from the bible While I was just browsing through theurl=http://books.google.com/books?id=DnV7xkdg4IYC&lpg=PP1&ots=TOWWf8Q2SB&dq=101%20hikes%20in%20northern%20california&pg=PA59#v=onepage&q=&f=false bible, I found this unticked. The weather was playing hide & seek & this was a safer option than Tomales Point. Thanks to Gayathri for all the winter gear for S. It is really funny we did not know about this place so close from home. That is the main reason I fell in love with the book. The book holds gems in every page. But apparantly, this is a well known park. We parked outside & chose to walk the extra mi into the park. When we got to the park entrance, the entrance fee machine was out of service & the entrance was free.(On other days enter paying $5). But the weather was cool & cloudy ... read more

North America » United States » California » Lake Tahoe February 16th 2010

Ever since we became parents, we've been eager to include S in our travels. If I think back now, little S has seen Grand Canyon at 5 months. Makes me feel like WOW! :-) Little S seems to want to include us too. Or maybe we just include ourselves anyways. We as hikers always looked to Lake Tahoe mostly for that reason. We've walked in snow & that's about it. But this time, we had so much fun. We spent so much time on the snow, sledding away to glory. Little S might have been a little 'duh!' about me going up again & again(& again & again &...)only to come sledding down. I had no clue sledding was so much fun. We made the first snowman of our family. The pictures are from this trip ... read more

The story before the trip: Weighing out our options on winter travel, we picked out Channel Islands as a top possibility. Now, if you were following our blog for a while, you will be smart enough not to believe what I just wrote. The truth remains that we have visited every place we know & Channel Islands seemed a better option than yet another drive down to LA. Channel islands on wiki Close to the California mainland, yet worlds apart, Channel Islands National Park encompasses five remarkable islands (Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara) and their ocean environment, preserving and protecting a wealth of natural and cultural resources. Isolation over thousands of years has created unique animals, plants, and archeological resources found nowhere else on Earth... read more
