After reading a few travel blogs on this site I thought I better add some myself, especially considering the amazing time I am having so far here in Cambodia.

Thank-you to Daniel who wrote an amazing piece about his trip from Phnom Penh to Ban Lung via Kratie and back. I'm hoping my trip, 3 years after you posted yours is as enjoyable.

I'm a early 30's Australian lad who's decided to try and knock off at least one country a year for the next 10 years (and do it properly, none of this 3 countries in a week stuff for me!). So here goes, the first one off the list is Cambodia.

I've fallen in love with Ratanakiri, it is truly an amazing place. Firstly I've chosen to stay at a beautiful accommodation spot called Treetops Eco-lodge which is built on a hillside and features both rooms and bungalows. I booked ahead which means I managed to secure one of the bungalows with hot and cold water that's down the hill. Be warned that the rooms and the bungalows up the hill do not have hot water, so best to book ahead as having hot water isn't an additional cost. The bungalows are surrounded by trees which means there is a downside that you do tend to have to co-exist with the occassional spider or bug, but the rooms do have flywire on the windows and doors so that keeps the mosquitos out. My room does have a ... read more

The bus ride up to Kratie is apparently meant to take around 6 hours, ours took 7.5 hours unfortunately due to an elderly woman throwing up (at least I hope that's what it was) in the isle of the bus as the bus pulled out of the Phnom Penh bus station. May I just say it was one of the most putrid smells I've ever been around and unfortunately hung around for the 45 minutes til we made it to a depot thing towards the outskirts of Phnom Penh where they washed out the isle. I pity the poor guy who had to clean up the mess. The good news about the bus ride to Kratie was that the 'smooth as silk' road that Lonely Planet talked about was still mostly in tact. The route did ... read more

My final full day in Phnom Penh has been a lovely day. I think to totally get this city, you need to walk around on it's streets a bit. The past two days I've been doing this and it's been a lovely time. Today I set out early to go to the Royal Palace which also houses the silver pagoda. The Royal Palace is only a few blocks away from where I'm staying, so within 20-25 minutes (I went the long way around the palace to find the entrance) I was inside the beautifully green manicured gardens of the palace. There is a number of different buildings and pagoda within the grounds. They spread out on one side with manicured lawns and paths between these beautifully built and decorated buildings and on the other side where ... read more

To be fair to Phnom Penh, it really did have a tough act to follow after my ecstatic time in Siem Reap. However, I can't help but feel that the capital of Cambodia has lost the exotic feel that the Lonely Planet guide talks about. After the emotionally draining day of visiting the killing fields and the site of the S-21 prison, I decided to do what I was hoping would be an upbeat tourist thing today and head to the Tamao Wildlife Sanctuary which is a good hour to hour and a half drive from Phnom Penh. There are no buses that go here and the hotel I'm staying at isn't really that helpful with tourist stuff, so I booked a taxi through the tuk-tuk driver from yesterday for the trip. The Lonely Planet guide ... read more

The day started at 8.30am this morning when the tuk-tuk picked me up from my hotel and shuttled me to the killing fields. The killing fields are around 14km out of town, and by tuk-tuk you can get there in around 30mins through the fairly busy roads of Phnom Penh. At the killing fields you can hire a guide to show you around which I did. The charge is a donation, so I gave my guide USD$5. He was very thorough and spoke very good English. There's things that I would never have known if I didn't have a guide. We started by sitting beside the stupa which is the monument in the centre of the killing fields. Morbidly the stupa displays around 1800 skulls of people who were killed there. It's there that my guide ... read more

Travel days are never my favourite day on holiday, especially when it's a 6 hour bus ride on a road that isn't anywhere near what I thought it woud be. The day started sadly as I said goodbye to Siem Reap, to the lovely staff of The Villa and to one of the tour guides who escorted me around the temples who has to be one of the most gentle men I have ever met in my life. I was picked up from my guest house in a minibus just before 8am in the morning. The minibus was already mostly full of people with eight of them being from a Singapore university on an end of study adventure. We talked for most of the minibus trip from the centre of Siem Reap to the bus depot ... read more

Originally I planned only to stay four nights in Siem Reap, however I couldn't quite fit it all in, so decided to stay a fifth so that I could visit Beng Melea. May I just say, this was the best decision I could have made. Beng Melea is an hour and a half drive from Siem Reap which means it's nowhere near as crowded as the Angkor's Vat and Thom and off the beaten track of most tour groups who'll take you to Banteay Srei and Ta Prohm. This is part of the charm. Although there were other tour groups while we were there, the tourists probably numbered about 20. Our tour started at the West gate which has a spectacular tree growing on it, in much the same vein as Ta Prohm. The entryway cannot ... read more

A huge thank-you goes to Villa Siem Reap for organising this tour of some of the harder to get to temples in the Angkor region. Today my group consisted of four of us, plus our tour guide (the same one I had for the stilted village tour) and our driver. We visited some of the oldest temples in the region, some built prior to 900. The older temples were far less complex or mindblowing as the Angkor Vat and Angkor Thom group of temples but were still very impressive in their own right. The fact that they could build these monuments without machinery was an achievement. The older temples are built using mostly brick and volcanic rock. There's no floor to ceiling carvings on the wall however the first temple we visited did have sculpting made ... read more

I started reading the Lonely Planet guide about Vietnam and Cambodia because I really wanted to go to Vietnam. Somehow along the way the more I found out about Cambodia the more I wanted to spend all 3 weeks I had for holidays here. The choice could not have been more perfect! The 15 hours it took to get from Melbourne to Siem Reap was well worth it, even the 4 hour layover in KLIA and the slightly dodgy breakfast on the MEL-KLIA leg of the flight. Siem Reap has blown me away in more ways than one. Firstly, I have to rave about the people at The Villa Siem Reap where I am staying, and where I am currently writing this from. I'd heard that the Khmer people were lovely but I really wasn't expecting ... read more
