Before moving to Australia, I decided a trip to Switzerland was in order. Mostly to visit Grossmuetti and the family. :) It doubled as waiting time just in case I didn't get the visa, but finally I was granted my visa the day before I left Montreal. It was my first trip in close to three years, so it was good be back. The first weekend here in Switzerland, I relaxed in Interlaken, helping my aunt and her family do some fall yard work. The weekend included some nice long walks from the house to the town, alongside the lake, visiting some old ruins, and having a Sauser and vermicelle in town (an unfermented grape juice and a chestnut, cream, and meringue-based dessert, both seasonal specialties). The weather wasn't fantastic, but it wasn't too cold and ... read more

North America » Canada » Quebec » Mont Tremblant October 18th 2010

For our mini-honeymoon, we headed up to Mont Tremblant. We took off on the Monday, driving our slow ride in our dodgy rental car (which had unbalanced winter tires, one of which almost threadbare, causing the steering wheel to shake uncontrollably over 95kmph!) up to Mont Tremblant. It was a very scenic and pretty drive, and we arrived in time for beautiful colours reflecting off the lake. We checked into our one-bedroom suite at the Marriott and spent the rest of the afternoon and evening finally relaxing after one really long, stressful but amazingly wonderful week. Just enjoying the moment. And after dinner we came back to discover the fireplace lighted with extra logs. The next day we set off to explore and enjoy the sunshine. Feeling adventurous, we picked the 6.5km trail and headed up ... read more

Finally, after 2 years, I get a little bit of a taste of summer! Having spent the last two North American summers in the southern hemisphere, I was lacking more than a bit of vitamin D! So I was more than ready to put up with one or two of the many heat waves that hit Montreal this summer! Luckily I got to experience one before heading to the cold of Orange, Australia. And I was also happy to come back to warm temperatures, although I could've done without the humidity! I spent the last month of summer enjoying the warm sunshine as much as I could. I was even up for dawn workouts on Molson field (as an attempt to tone up before the wedding!). I enjoyed walks on the mountain, lazing in the sunshine ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Orange September 6th 2010

One of the most common comments I got while I was in Orange, NSW was "Oh, you're Canadian, you must be loving this weather!!" Grrrr. I don't mind the cold. Okay, that's a lie. I totally mind it. My Canadian blood has been spoiled with Canadian double-paned glass, central heating and proper winter clothing. I was not prepared for a winter in Orange, NSW. Go ahead, make fun of the Canuk who can't handle an Aussie winter. Sure. But if it's -7°C outside, I do not expect to walk inside and still see my breath in the air!! I expect to walk inside to warm up, not continue shivering! I am also used to there being snow on the ground if it is -7° outside. Give me snow any day over just plain cold with no ... read more

I'm currently in Australia, in the quiet country city of Orange, New South Wales. I'm not being terribly touristy, as I'm spending my days relaxing, reading, and planning little details for an autumn ceremony in Montreal. I did actually go to the tourist information office, so I do plan to be a tourist in the next two weeks before I leave Orange. But in the meantime, I'm being adult and looking at loans and jobs and houses and all that adult jazz that I've avoided for so long. Am I ready to settle down? On the topic of travel as a lifestyle, I feel the need to ramble: There are some people who never travel. Perhaps they are scared, perhaps they always find excuses to not travel, or perhaps it just doesn't interest them. There are ... read more

I haven't written in ages, and I do suppose that is because I haven't gone on a big trip in a while. One might say I've dropped off the radar. Despite being in one spot for well over six months, I still run into friends in Montreal who are surprised to find out I'm here. My Montreal-based family here still assumes I'm off traveling even though I've been in town since last September. So here's a short recap of what I've been up to over the past 9 months: - Arrived back in Montreal just in time to compete with all the students looking for apartments. I finally find a cheap place in Verdun...it's alright but just doesn't hold a candle to the Plateau!! - One of my best friends got married and I ended up ... read more

A quick little entry...mostly for photos! Dave came to Montreal for his December holidays! We greeted him with a surprise party at Pub St Paul in the Old Port, followed by getting into the Olympic Spirit by cheering on the Torch Relay! After two weeks of fun in Montreal, we headed down to Goshen, NY for Christmas. This time around, we also had a visitor from Switzerland (hi Kim!), which gave us an excuse to get to the City more often! We headed down to the city on two separate trips...one to just be tourists, and for New Year's Eve! We checked out the Natural History Museum, Rockafeller Centre, Times Square and lots of shopping. For New Year's Eve, we decided to brave the crowds and debauchery of New York City. It's supposedly the thing to ... read more

A lifetime ago, it now seems, I started this blog with a trip to Denver. And now I'm writing from there yet again! Just for fun, I decided to re-read the old blogs. It's been said that travel changes a person, and of course, I spot small changes both in my writing style and my attitude towards things. Ah, I was naive, eh? And I suppose I will look back on these most recent travels in a few years and think the same thing. But I digress. Onto the Denver adventures! The first time I was in Denver to visit Sarah, we aimed to see Garden of the Gods and Pike's Peak. We didn't do that this time either, but saw many a splendid site instead, with no snow to spoil our plans. I landed in ... read more

Although Dave and I had finished our big road trip, I wanted to do one more little trip. Back to Canberra! Now Canberra is one of those cities that people love to hate (Ottawa anyone?) but I really don't think it's that bad. Last time I made fun of Canberra's many round-abouts, as it's impossible not to drive in circles. I also have to point out that some of their merging lanes are practically non-existent. You see, Canberra's a bit of an urban planning oddity, in that it is not one city but rather five town centers joined under the name of the ACT. Hence the funny street layouts. Maybe. Or they might just like going in circles. Its nightlife is also spread across five town centres, with practically nothing in the Civic centre where the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland July 20th 2009

We drove into Queensland via an inland road, up a very steep hill that the car didn't like (it resorted to blowing white smoke at us through the vents). We left the car to cool as we took pictures of the New South Wales and Queensland signs, and then headed on our way. Our goal was Lamington National Park, the Green Mountains Section. We had in mind to do a big overnight hike, as I have yet to do one. One of Queensland's Great Walks went through Lamington and Springbrook National Parks, but the information hotline provided us with no more information, and the website was just as useless. So we planned to show up at Green Mountains and ask a ranger instead. The drive to Green Mountains from Byron Bay was lovely, but long, along ... read more
