Well bloggers I am back and feeling much better that this time yesterday. I am not really sure what I came down with yesterday but from my experience I think it was too much sun on Sunday when I walked miles and miles around the city to get to and from the San Telmo market. Too much sun and heat. I had my sunscreen on but as the day went on and I was sweating all day I think the sunscreen washed away. In any event i did not feel well yesterday so after school I dragged myself back to recoleta and after eating some fruit and drinking lots of water I went to bed and slept till 9 this morning!! So school has started, I can walk to the classes along Uruguay street ,which is ... read more

Good evening blogging buddies,it is Sunday evening here in the southern hemisphere. It has been a beautiful though very hot weekend. I was reading in the paper this morning that the temperature on Thursday was the third hottest day in 50 years here in Buenos Aires. The weekend was a little cooler with a very pleasant 27 or so on Saturday and today back up over 30. I am not complaining, don't get me wrong I love the heat, and am reminded when I walk out into it why I chose the southern hemisphere to escape winter in the north. I have decided that my initial days here are for orientation.Physical orientation to the heat and geographic orientation to my surroundings and the city.So I wander around,I set my sights on a place or a thing and off ... read more

Wow it was hot today,in the sunshine probably 37 or more and there was lots and lots of sun. I started the day with my coffee and breakfast at a leisurely pace and read the spanish paper on the balcony. I supppose saying I read the paper is a stretch but I am scanning the words and making up the story as I do.Perhaps I am getting it right perhaps not but in any event the exercise pleases me and I think i am getting it. I also try to pronounce the words, so my neighbours may wonder about the mumbling going on above and below them.I wandered out into the heat with my mission for the morning to go to my school to get a sense of location and distance before my first day of ... read more

Slept like a log after the long trip and extended day.Mercifully a queen size bed and not one of the foolish beds made with two smaller ones pushed together. I introduced myself to Andres the doorman here and told him of my intention to learn Spanish. The information was met with great pleasure and approval it appeared to me and I am sure I have now made a chatty friend to start my days. I suppose it is not really necessary to tell you all about the weather which is such a Canadian thing but needless to say blus sky and heat are the order of the days here at this time of the year which is comparable to our July with about 5 more degrees added on. My mission today was to continue to explore ... read more

Hola blog readers, this is my first entry of hopefully many, to chronicle and pass on the experience of a gringo in Buenos Aires.I enjoyed blogging on a trip to china back in 2005 and you can also read those posts here I think as nothing seems to ever disappear once it is etched in the world wide web. I left Canada on the evening of January3rd flying Air Canada (the peoples airline) through Toronto,Santiago Chile to Buenos Aires. Passing through Toronto I spend the time sipping and sitting in the Maple leaf loungs listening to the Canada/Russia hockey game and as the game got worse and worse for canada I thought that it seemed to mark a good time to leave the North before the collective downer and gnashing of teeth over the loss, coupled ... read more

Well it seems like a long way off when you first arrive but here it is already. Our last full day in China began early with the sound of a flute playing coming from somewhere in Peoples Square. Neither of us got up to see the source but enjoyed the offering. After breakfast we went to see the Urban Planing Exhibition Hall just across the park from our hotel - a beautiful building dedicated to the future planning for Shanghai. It was, as we should now be expecting, well done and informative. The maquette of the city is amazing and there were films and displays about the port's future, industrial zones, pollution controls, water and waste systems, revitalizations of all sorts. I hate to be sucked in by propaganda and wonder at what cost all these amazing ... read more

Morning bloggers. Actually it is about 10:30 and we have just returned from the Chinese pub down the road from the hotel. Dire Straits on the juke box and Tiger beer on draft.I could live here. The day started with the sounds of what from my bed sounded like a good old fashioned demonstration. My CUPW blood started to stir and I was ready to hit the streets to battle injustice and the supression of farmers and the mal treatment of pandas.Actually I just rolled over and slept a while longer. It is amazing what foreign travel does for one's realities. We did get up, though not at the sound of the people. Breakfast was the now expected buffet. Dumplings were steaming and yogourt was cool and refreshing. After breakfast I blogged for a bit while Ann ... read more

We do not meet Kelly until 9:30 and enjoy breakfast and the BBC world service on TV. Terrible news from Pakistan. We walk across Peoples square to visit the Shanghaii museum first off.Kelly leaves us to wander on our own and we enjoy the jade galleries as well as the porceline and some calligraphy. The museum is beautiful and modern with some stunningly beautiful things to see, After the museum we are off by taxi to walk along the 'Bund', a mile long boardwalk running along the Huangpu river. The busy river on one side and a street of large ex financial neo classical 1930's New York style buildings. Kelly tells us of the city stories, history. From the Bund we are off to the French Concession.Apparently no french lived here mostly chinese and russians. The area is one of ... read more
