Good evening bloggers,I have just come back from having supper with a couple of school mates around the corner on Santa Fe. It is a beautiful summer evening and so pleasant to sit out on the terrace while the world goes by. I have had a busy couple of days here since I last spoke to you all and am always amazed how quickly the time goes. Thursday I was greeted by a man hanging from the building across fom my balcony in the process of tearing away the thick growth of ivy covering the wall.A shame really, to see the lovely green that faced my window being stripped away, but I assume it has to do with the building deterioration or something,no se. Thursday is also the day the mothers and grandmothers of the Plaza ... read more

Well a sad and somewhat disturbing day here in sunny and beautiful Buenos Aires.A young French photographer was stabbed and killed yesterday morning at about 8am in Plaza San Martin by a robber trying to steal his camera. Yes the same Plaza I was in on sunday and was in yestarday about noon!! The police surveillance video show the guy walking/running away and I think they arrested a 20 something year old guy but it does shake ones confidence about walking around with a camera. Part of me say's come on I brought cameras down here to take pics not leave them in my apartment and part of me say's it isn't worth it.I am leaning for some middle ground with a little more thought to concealing my camera when ever possible when walking and just ... read more

Good afternoon bloggers, it is Super Bowl sunday in some parts of the world including some locations here in Buenos Aires. Game time here is 8:30 local time so it will be a late night I suspect. I am going to head over to The Alamo across the street where there should be a good crowd to watch the game.A nice sports bar with 4 floors of bar with TV's on each so a lively spot.I am not sure anyone from Argentina cares really, football here is of course a different game and in Buenos Aires there are two huge teams and a rivalry between Boca and River. The season has not yet started but they are playing exhibition games around the country.I would love to go to a game but understand it is a tough ticket to ... read more

Good evening from a rainy Buenos Aires.A thunderstorm hit last evening and the unsettled weather remained all day with rain and wind. It is the first completely cloudy day I have had here in almost 4 weeks. I was walking to school in the rain hoping it was not an omen of what was to come. I started the next level today with a new classroom, new book and a number of new students. It is quite the United Nations with 2 Canadians,2 USA,2 Brits,2 South Africans,1 Dutch,1 French. I have the same teacher,Marina which is a good thing. I enjoy her teaching style and also like the continuity of having her shepherd me through the next level. We were knee deep in irregular verbs before I could say Hola! and the class itself is conducted almost ... read more

Good evening bloggers, saturday evening here in BA and another warm day in the capital. It has been a week of school again, with the focus on a test that I wrote yesterday. The levels at school are divided into three week blocks and my level drew to a close friday with my first written test,my first test in a long while.Let me just say I am not good with these things and had a difficult week thinking about the upcoming test and my brain! I get Spanish,I hear it,I understand it I can even read some of it now but put a verb or grammar infront of me and I am like a deer in the head lights. But I soldier on with grammar and eventually some of it sinks in, I think and hope.It does not help ... read more

Good morning bloggers, it is another sunny day here in BA as expected this time of the year. The weekend was very hot again with humidity and temps in the 30's.It gets hottest in the afternoon around 4 when the sun just neams down on the streets and people. There is always something going on on the streets, even though it is much quieter on the weekends, people are out and about. As I am walking alot I can tell you about some of the things I have noticed. Argentina is still rebounding from the meltdown of its economy in 2002 and most recently with the economic shudder that went around the world. People are getting by anyway they can but some clearly are struggling. Whole families live on the streets, set up in doorways with mattresses blankets and ... read more

Good evening blogging people, I am not dead or laying in a hospital bed just finding my rhythm changing as the weeks go by here in South America.I get to bed by midnight most nights and am up early for coffee and a bite to eat. Lately I have been going to a nice park I found around the corner to do my 'tarea" homework. I always like sitting in the parque and watching the city go by. I have helped a few people asking for directions this week as well as spoke to a guy who was doing a survey for the city government but when I told him, yo soy de Canada the survey disappeared and he just wanted to talk. I am still struggling with the dreaded 'Verbos' but have more and more ... read more

Good day blogging buddies it is Sunday morning and I am just having my coffee and to my great joy some peanut butter and banana!! I had not been able to find peanut butter in the stores I have visited and do so enjoy it in the morning so can tell you I was very pleased to find it yesterday. It actually found me in a mystical and mysterious way.I was grazing through the fruit and vegetable secuopn of the store near my appartment and there it was sitting on a weigh scale!!! Totally alone and out of place and yet there as if appearing for me. Well I am not going to fail to acknowledge such a miracle and will certainly be writing to the Vatican to put the peanit butter appearance on the list ... read more

Well bloggers assorted, it is Friday night and my first week of school has ended. I have attached a photo taken this afternoon of our level one class. Our teacher Marina is in the middle,a woman of great patience and skill. Not so sure haveing a social night on a Thursday (school night) is such a good idea. We were a bit unruly today, easily off topic and moving freely through a list of subjects such as rude Spanish expressions (not put up on the board) to ecomomics,Perronistas,Christina Kirchner,Latvian liquores and many things I have forgotten.Lots of fun and always interesting and informative.Oh yes also got into new verbos regulares! Last night was a success by any measure with a good turnout and lots of Spanish and fun all rolled into one. There are Canadians,Dutch,Germans,Japanese,Latvians.Aussies,Brazilians. Cold beer, wine and ... read more

Good evening blogging buddies,it is Thursday evening here in BA and the sunshine has returned to the fair city, with a little less heat.My first week of school is coming to an end and I can say that Spanish teaches one humility and brings you to places long since forgotten, if they were ever visited in the first place.I knew from the get go that I was starting on the lowest rung of the ladder to proficiency and all my expectations have been filled. The rules/exceptions and general complexity of grammar I learned in school must be something my mind has sealed away like a horror experienced as a child that has been forever repressed, until now! Adult education must be a skill unto itself, as from my perspective the brain just does not seem to go ... read more
