It took us most of the morning to get packed up. We didn't plan anything other than packing and getting to the airport so it made for a relaxed day. Beth escorted us the whole was which was nice. We were all sad for our time to be ending. On the one hand it was hard to believe almost 2 weeks went by but at the same time we couldn't believe how much we had seen and done in a short time. Beth plotted out our train schedule and after a few transfers we were on our last leg of the journey from Kyoto to the airport which is outside of Osaka (KIX). We had plenty of time when we arrived so we enjoyed a nice big Chinese dinner at about 3:00. It was excellent, my ... read more

Our wonderful time in Japan with Beth is quickly coming to an end so of course, we crammed this day full of site seeing. We had a lot left on our list of "must do" in Kyoto so we started the day at the Imperial Palace. The original palace was built in 794 but like so many temples it was destroyed by fire from all of the fighting that took place with the shoguns. The present buildings were constructed in 1855. The murals inside are impressive and so was the garden areas. This was one of my favorite gardens. It was made to be a representation of the landscape of Japan with the tall trees being the mountains, the islands represent the land and the water the ocean,etc... Next we visited Nijo-jo castle which was very ... read more

We are back at the Village Kyoto Ryokan style hotel. We like this hotel so much we decided to stay here again when we decided to revisit Kyoto instead of going on to Osaka. The futon beds are super comfortable and the onsen bath is a very nice place to relax after being out in the cold all day. Today we took the trains to Byodo-in. This is a Buddhist temple built in 1053 AD. The hall was properly known as Hoo-do or Amida-do, a representation of the Pure Land of heaven guarded by a twin pair of birds, the phoenix. The pair of phoenix guardian birds are considered a national treasure and were taken off the building proper to protect them from the elements and are housed in the small museum on the temple grounds. ... read more

Today was our last day in Tokyo :( / :) ? Mom was happy that we were no longer going to be staying in the hotel-of-tiny-bathrooms, but we were sad that we were leaving the big city. Although, as soon as we arrived in Kyoto mom said, "This feels closer to home." I think she was relieved to be back in Kyoto. Before we left Tokyo, however, we headed over to Ueno Park--about 5 blocks away from our hotel--and took a stroll through the park to the Tokyo National Musuem. The Tokyo National Museum houses some of Japan's most valuable and precious historical objects and artistic masterpieces. The museum consists of four separate buildings, however, we just went into the main building; and there was plenty to look at. The exhibitions begin on the second floor ... read more

Cup of noodles was breakfast in the room today. Kristy mixed up the kim-chi flavor with the oriental vegetable soup so it was a flavor mash up. We headed off for Ueno Park, which is two blocks from our hotel. The park means "Upper Field" in Japanese and was the location of the famous battle of the last samurai. Emperor Meiji used guns to cut down cavalry charges headed by none other than Tom Cruise. (in Tom's dreams) The battle did really occur, and Meiji dedicated the battlefield to the common man, after he killed so many of them, except Tom Cruise. We looked at a Shinto shrine, a pagoda with a giant Buddah face, and walked around trying to find our way on the map. Many Japanese families were headed with their children to the ... read more

New Years Day. We woke up late after being up late, did some laundry and then headed out about 2pm to find Soba noodles for lunch. It is a tradition to have Soba noodles on New Years Day in Japan. We ended up at a small sidewalk cafe underneath the trains. The noodles were tasty and we had some tempura to go with them. While we were eating we felt an earthquake! We found out later is was a 6.8 quake but it only lasted about 30 seconds or so and the epicenter was out in the ocean so it wasn't much but enough to make us wonder if we would have to take cover. After lunch we headed to Shibuya, an area known for fashion and shopping. Beth wanted to visit Forever 21 and we ... read more

Greg, got up too early, according to his family. Despite this great disturbance, the day started slowly. We took a train a short hop to the electronics, animae, manga district in Akihabara. Greg was curious to see if there were any bargains to be had. We ate convenience store food for breakfast. They sell hard boiled eggs in little yellow webbed bags that are boiled in salty water so they are salt infused = good. On the way to Akihabara there was a donut shop that was selling chocolate raised donuts with green tea icing. Kristy was not hungry, but swore to come back to eat one. They are special winter flavors celebrating the New Year. We looked at animae stores, a "Potato" store crammed full of old electronic games, and a Volks doll store that ... read more

Asia » Japan » Tokyo December 30th 2011

We took the subway to the Tsukigi Fish Market this morning. The street leading to the market was super crowded so it took awhile. When we arrived Greg and Beth were hungry so we decided to find a sushi restaurant. They are everywhere but they were also super crowded so we waited about 30 mins just to get in to this tiny little place! G and B both said this was the best sushi they have ever eaten! Probably the most expensive they have ever eaten too! $35.00 each for 7 pieces with a roll and soup. I had a tuna roll and it was amazing. No hint of fishy. I would eat sushi all the time at home if it tasted this good. After lunch we walked around the fish market. It was getting late ... read more

This morning we took a taxi to Nanzen-ji Temple which is one of the most famous Zen temples from the 1600's. It was about 9:30 am when we arrived so there were not many tourists. After hiking around the temple we went to a sub temple to the rear which backs up to the mountain and then we hiked up into the mountain to a beautiful waterfall and more little shrines in the mountain. It was beautiful and I can only imagine it is more beautiful at Cherry Blossom and Fall color change. It would sure be a lot more crowded then and we are enjoying having everything in Kyoto not so crowded. Next we walked to Choin-in temple and visited a temple where they were holding a Buddist service in a shrine that had a ... read more

Today we had breakfast in our room, it's part of the deal here so we ordered Japanese style breakfast which was cold salmon and rice and a very small egg puff of some kind, a little kimchi and some other unrecognizable tofu kind of things. It was enough to get us going along with tea we made in the room. We set off on foot to Nijo Castle and Imperial Palace. Unfortunately, both are closed for the holiday but we plan to come back on the 5th to both. We continued on foot to several temples including Heian Jingu Shrine which was built to celebrate the 1100th year anniversary. Gee, we get excited about the Bi-Centennial. It was built in 1895. This was a Shinto shrine. Usually orange is Shinto. Now we were getting pooped out ... read more
