Geo: 36.7402, -119.786Today we visited Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. The day was supposed to be another scorcher, which I found difficult to believe, since we were going to be in an immense forest. And fortunately, I was right. We enjoyed a pleasant 70-72 degrees all day long, while it was 99 degrees on the outside of the parks. We left the hotel at 7:45 and began the one hour drive through miles of orange groves and olive groves and vineyards.Lake Kaweah filled the valley that was crowned by yellow hillsides peppered with dark green trees and mountains rising in the distance, in the early morning haze. And the many trucks parked at the boat launch gave evidence that Sunday morning was a way for the locals to get away from it all and enjoy ... read more

Geo: 36.2065, -119.343We planned to put on a lot of miles today, and we did. We drove from Williams, AZ to Tulare, CA, which is about 520 miles. The only sight seeing we did was through the windows of the car, but there was much to see. We left at 7:45 AM and it was setting up to be a very hot day. By 9:45 the temperature hit 100 degrees (we wondered if the car display would do 3 digits, and it did) and that was only the beginning. It went as high as 109 degrees, but most of the trip held around the 108 degree mark.Much of the day was spent driving through the desert. The scenery changed constantly, but it was always desert. At times it was more grass, at times it was more ... read more

Geo: 36.0262, -112.136My, my. What to say about today. I am speechless, and that almost never happens, as you all know. There are no words to describe the incredible beauty that is the Grand Canyon. This entry will be more about photos than words. We left the hotel this morning at 8:15 and headed north. We were on our way after stopping at the Safe Way for supplies to make sandwiches. I know from past experience, it is better to bring your own food when visiting the parks, as restaurants are few and sometimes inconvenient. The trip out of town took us down the main street in Williams, which is right out of the 50's. It is restaurants and motels, many with signs that have not been modernized in 60 years. It is quaint and it is ... read more

Geo: 35.4272, -112.318We were up early (I think we are still on Florida time) and ready to go at 7:40 this morning, and no one was more anxious to leave than Beamer. Being in the desert, the hotel didn't have as much as a small patch of grass. Last night when he went for a walk, he stepped on a burr and got it stuck in his foot, which didn't make him very happy. At that point he decided Santa Rosa should be in his rear view mirror, so in the morning he was happy to leave. When we pulled out of the hotel parking lot, the temperature was 50 degrees and the seat heater felt awfully good. It was overcast for several hours and since we were at 5,000 ft., visibility was limited and some ... read more

Geo: 34.9386, -104.682We left Oklahoma City at 7:45 this morning, still alive and not having experienced any tornados. I had heard on the news that things were brewing up for another round on Tuesday and that made me nervous, but it didn't happen. Phew. It rained hard during the night and there was thunder and lightning, but no tornados. We were on the top floor and it woke us up around 4 AM. And it was still raining hard when we took to the road. I had planned to look for tornado damage heading out of town, but the rain obscured the view. About half an hour down the road, the rain let up and we were able to see evidence of the storms from last Friday. First we saw a lot of debris by the ... read more

Geo: 35.472, -97.5203This was a day with an uneventful beginning but an emotional ending. We left Forrest City, AR at 7:55 AM, which was easy, since we gained an hour yesterday. And we drove across Arkansas on I-40 all the way to Oklahoma City, where we arrived at 4 PM. We were warned to avoid this area due to the tornados, but we headed right into it...we must be crazy. The ride was beautiful in may ways. Arkansas is a pretty state. We saw more farm land, with corn and wheat fields, and S shaped furrows on flat land. Not sure what that was all about and I can't find anything about it on the internet, but we suspect it had something to do with water retention. And we encountered construction pretty much the whole way. But ... read more

Geo: 35.0114, -90.7862I was looking forward to this day because Arkansas was in our sights. Back in 1998-1999 I lived in Little Rock for 7 months, working for the State of Arkansas on a project to bring their Child Support Enforcement computer systems into federal compliance. I had not looked forward to moving there, but I discovered that my uneducated perceptions of Arkansas were all wrong. It is a wonderful place and the people who live there are first rate. Where else do you find people who will let you into backed-up, rush-hour traffic on the interstate, just to be nice. I can tell you it isn't in Boston. Sorry, Scott. In Little Rock, I made some good friends whom I will always remember and with whom I hope to always stay in touch. We left ... read more

Geo: 33.7515, -84.7477We woke up this morning no worse for wear. The evening had been a lot of fun and we both slept well after our baby fix. We left the hotel just before 8 AM and headed back to the city for another look. Lindsay's father, Bob, gave us some pointers on where to go to get a better view of Charleston. We drove to The Battery, which is a promenade down by the harbor, known for its Antebellum homes. Other than Lady Antebellum, I had never heard that term before, but my research indicates that it means homes built before the war…and in many cases it refers to the Civil War. We drove along the seawall on Murray Blvd. (no kidding) and looked at many incredible old mansions facing the harbor. They were mostly ... read more

Geo: 32.7766, -79.9309And off we go, at 6:45 AM we hit the road, headed for Charleston, SC for an evening with Max, our grandson. Both houses buttoned up, we will not be sleeping in our own beds for a month. A new bed every night and many of you know what a challenge that is for me. But onward we go, complaints in my back pocket. And if the bed is too hard, there is always a way to deal with that…a lot of wine and maybe something to help me relax a bit more. Lindsay is attending a wedding in Charleston this weekend and we will be taking care of Max, since children are not invited. Scott was not able to be here, due to a pressing business matter in Boston. We are delighted to ... read more

Geo: 28.1758, -80.5903It has been a year since our last cross-country road trip, and here we go again. Some may think us brave, some may think us foolish, and some may even think we are just plain crazy, but with Solivita once again in our rearview mirror, we are off for another adventure, to explore what is truly a magnificent country, our country, the USA. Our sites are on the wineries of Oregon and Washington State. And if all goes well, we may even hop up to Vancouver, BC and take in the sites of what many say is an incredible city. Since last year's trip was a success, I will reissue my sentiments on the first day of that trip and hope that all works out as well as it did then. So here it ... read more
