Geo: 28.3467, -81.48016/5/12 – We left Savannah, GA at 7:45, 74 degrees, and headed down I-95 to Florida and home sweet home. I was up early this morning. Once the car was pointed south, I was anxious to get there. We arrived at 1 PM, and it surely felt good to be back. The house was comfy and ready for us, thanks to Pat and Andy. Great friends.Well, when we began this adventure, I paused a bit, unsure that we would make it all the way without a major blow-up of some kind. But I am please to report that it went very smoothly, and we had a wonderful time. And, for the last week we have been talking about the next trip…to visit the states we did not get to this time around. Of the ... read more

Geo: 32.0808, -81.09076/4/12 – We left Michelle, Brett and Danielle in Apex, NC at 8:20 AM, 68 degrees and headed for Savannah, Ga. It was not raining when we left, but it rained most of the trip to Georgia. The storm was following us down the road.We chose to set out on some back roads, rather than the customary I-95 route that we know so well. And it proved to be scenic and a better choice. For anyone who is familiar with I-95 and North Carolina going south, or South Carolina going north, you have seen the obnoxious "South of the Border" billboards that litter the road for miles and miles. We avoided them almost entirely, until the road we were on intersected with I-95, right at the border. And the last half mile in was ... read more

Geo: 35.7326, -78.85326/1/12 – We left Knoxville this morning at 8:45, 68 degrees, headed for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It rained during the night, the ground was saturated and the parking lot full of puddles. We saw the lowest priced gas on the road out of Knoxville…3.17. What a difference from California where it was not unusual to see 4.89. The park is not far from Knoxville. To get there we drove through Pigeon Forge. Anyone who has been to International Drive in Orlando would recognize a resemblance, except in a rural setting and with a bit of a mountain country flair. The 3-4 mile stretch of road was lined with motels, restaurants, and daytime and nighttime attractions…Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede, Dollywood Splash Country, Wonderworks, The Opry, Hatfield and McCoy Dinner Show, Hollywood Wax ... read more

Geo: 35.9605, -83.92085/31/12 – It was a dark and dreary day in St. Louis this morning. It was sprinkling rain and overcast when we left at 8:15, 61 degrees. But it promised to improve as we moved eastward, and it did. We pointed the car toward Knoxville, TN for a long day of driving.Almost immediately, we drove through the city of St. Louis and I took a few photos of the arch, though they are less than spectacular, given the weather and that I took them from a moving car. We chose not to stop, since we had both climbed to the top of that arch on previous visits to the city. And we crossed the muddy Mississippi River on the Martin Luther King, Jr. bridge. The river was bustling with activity, as it was in ... read more

Geo: 38.6276, -90.1995/30/12 –So, today was another travel day. We left Salina, MO at 8:30 AM, and the temperature was a comfortable 62 degrees. We got onto I-70 and headed for St. Louis, MO. The first part of the drive was similar to yesterday…flat golden fields of grain mixed with dark green fields of corn. As we moved eastward, the corn got taller, and I wondered if the climate was warmer here than in west Kansas. We saw a farmer harvesting his grain…no idea if it was oats or barley, but I was quite sure it was not wheat. And as we continued east, the plains began to ripple with hills and dales, and fields became grazing land for cattle, with green grass to eat, ponds to drink from and large green trees to keep cool. ... read more

Geo: 38.8405, -97.60975/29/12 – We got up early today, but for some reason, we still didn't leave until 8:15 AM. Must have been the time we took to have breakfast. It was 54 degrees in Denver when we got on the road. This was a day for traveling. There is not much to see on I-70 through Colorado and Kansas, so we drove all the way to Salina. And we were told…it is NOT Salina (saleena), it is Sal EYE na. Learn something every day. Anyway, there was not much to take photos of that didn't look like photos I had already taken, so I only have a few. The road eastward from Denver is flat with a capital F. And it boggles the mind that just a few miles west, the mountains rise to 15,000 ... read more

Geo: 39.74, -104.9925/28/12 – We woke up this morning to clear sunny skies and 34 degrees. A beautiful day. And I am thinking, this has to be the last cold day of this trip. Tomorrow we are going to be down from the mountains. I must add, however, that 34 degrees in Colorado is not nearly as cold as 50 degrees in Florida. Seems like what they say about dry heat not being as hot as humid heat is also true about the cold. A dry cold is not nearly as cold as a humid cold, which cuts right through you to the bone. The only time we were really chilled is when the wind was blowing. But we muscled through with only genes and light sweatshirts. So we begin the day watching a colorful air ... read more

Geo: 40.4879, -106.8365/27/12 – They say that things happen in threes. I hope they are right, because after three days of driving in whiteout conditions on roads we don't know, we deserve a break. Hasn't anyone noticed that our license plate says FLORIDA on it?We left Salt Lake City at 8:30 AM headed for Steamboat Springs, CO. The temperature was a chilling 39 degrees and I was expecting that it would rise. It didn't. The mountains that I had hoped to photograph this morning were in the clouds. That should have given me a clue. Being the eternal optimist that I am, I decided that all we had to do was get over to the other side of this mountain range and all would be sunny and warm. But as we drove around the mountains, we ... read more

Geo: 40.7608, -111.8915/26/12 – Surprise, surprise. Those old bikers did not turn out to be a bunch of party animals after all. I think they went to bed before we did, because it got very quiet around 8 PM and we had a good night's sleep. So, no one told us it was Memorial Day. Just kidding. But this fact has made it a challenge to finding accommodations this weekend. Anything around the national parks is booked solid for sure. With Yosemite, we had to get a room 40 minutes from the park, and that was a Wednesday. We ruled out Yellowstone for that very same reason. All booked up. We will have to come back another time to see Old Faithful. Salt Lake City was all booked up this weekend, too, and we had to ... read more

Geo: 40.9732, -117.7355/25/12 – Rough day, today. A long day with lots of trials and tribulations along the way. We had planned an early start, because our drive to Winnemucca, NV was more than 7 hours long. But we had some condo business to attend to before we could hit the road. We finally left Maraposa at 8:45 with Yosemite in the clouds behind us.We drove for about 40 minutes down and out of the mountains and as soon as we got onto the highway, we had a sick dog. Beamer threw up in the back seat and we had to take an exit and clean it up and make him another comfortable bed. Once we got going again, Beamer got quite insistent that we attend to him and I knew he was not feeling well. ... read more
