Travel Blog Posts
Sorry this last blog has been a long time coming but what with Christmas in between I just didn't get around to it.. Anyway, as I left it last time we were heading to Kanchanaburi with the Minibus. This turned out to be a very good idea as we got picked up from our hostel and taken right to the door of our guesthouse in Kanchanaburi, great service and for not much more money than using public transport. Now, we have been to Kanchanaburi before but decided to go back and spend Christmas here as it was so relaxing, we are also travelling back just after Christmas so wanted to be close to Bangkok, we stayed in the same guesthouse as before, its called VN Guesthouse, its right on the river, from our room we are ... read more
So, we are heading off to Ayutthaya, this is the old capital of Siam, has lots of temples scattered all around the city, so looks like lots of walking ahead. Our trip up there is a little bit different than planned, we had bought ourselves a return ticket to Bangkok by local bus and then change buses there and go on from there to Ayutthaya but as I told you in the previous blog we had met up with a really nice family who offered us a seat in their pre booked minibus, oh I have their names now, its Steve, Tina, Lindsey and Neil. Anyway, they were coming back from Koh Samet the day after us so we arranged to meet them at the harbour, luckily we got there early as they also did even ... read more
Ok, been a few days once again since I updated whats been going on,but as I said being on Koh Samet, there wasn't going to be much to write about. So as I left it we were going to get ourselves a bike and this we did, cost us 500 Baht, about 10 euro, which is quite expensive for Thai standards but we have to bear in mind that this is a national park island and things like this are going to be a bit more expensive. So, we set off, straight away we got an idea of how bad the roads ahead were going to be, or I should say lack of roads were going to be, there is literally no tarmac surface here, its all dirt track and big potholes, you can see in ... read more
Koh Samet, Ok, time to stop counting days, its depressing us watching the days clock on, so now its just location... So, as I said in my last blog its time for a bit of relaxation now, we got a taxi from our hotel just outside Baan Phe to the harbour in the town centre to catch the boat thats going to take us to the island of Koh Samet, its a National Park and there is not a lot there except sandy beaches so just the place for relaxation. We have read that its a place popular with the Thai's as its only 3 hours from Bangkok and they come here for long weekends so will be interesting to see how busy it gets. Anyway our taxi, which turns out to be the hotel taxi ... read more
Day 10 n 11 - Dec 8/9 Today we leave Cambodia but our flight is not until late afternoon, so we spent most part of the day walking around, there is a Royal Palace here so while walking we think ah would be fun to take a rickshaw out to there, only cost us $2, so we hail one down, the poor man must have been well into his 60's, we both climb in, so funny and scary at the same time, we even had a race with another rickshaw driver, we were all laughing, got some good video footage of that. Anyway,we get to the Palace go to the entrance and realise that its over $6 each, now we are not tight on paying to see sights, but the previous day we had gone to ... read more
Day 8 n 9 Dec 6/7 We are now back in Phnom Penh which is the capital of Cambodia, as you know if you have been reading my previous blogs that this is where we first set off from, once again had an early start as left Siem Reap at 7am, so happy we took the VIP mini bus as it took us only 4hrs. We thought the bus would drop us off back at the hotel here but instead it was at their bus station and thankfully the owner of our hotel was there waiting for us to take us to the hotel, really appreciated, he is a really nice man and very helpful. On getting here this time they offered us a room with a balcony, its on the top floor but much better ... read more
Day 6 - 7 Dec 5/6 2009 Sorry, once again its been a few days since I managed to catch up on our blog, not had a good internet connection here, anyway, when I left you last we were going to watch the sunrise at Angkor Wat the next day.. It was a very early day, 5am infact, we left the hotel exactly on time, our guide was there nice and early, very reliable guy. Today we have a car to take us around as we are going further outside the city and a tuk tuk would take too long. Arrive well before sunrise at the temple and head for the lake on the inner grounds of the temple, as we arrive lots of the stall holders are there and they are offering you a "free" ... read more
Day 5 - Angkor Wat Was nicely surprised today with the breakfast we get here at the hotel, a big baguette, scrambled or fried egg, jam and butter, very filling and would keep you going for a good few hours.. Our guide turned up on time, in fact he was early, today we organised to be taken around in a tuk tuk with him, his name is Darith Touch and I will say now, he was great, very obliging with our needs, stopped if you saw something you wanted to take a photo of and had a very good sense of humour, his english was also of a very good standard, you will find him on www.smiles-of-angkor.com . We would say that if you are coming to this area then its worth having a guide, be ... read more
Day 4 Sorry its been a few days since my last blog, been quite busy and just not had the time to sit down and write it, so when I left you last time we were to heading to Siem Reap the following day. It was an early start today, got up in plenty of time as didn't want to be late for out bus, we had booked the VIP mini van as was told it would take only 5 hours as opposed to 7 on the local bus and for $2 dollars extra that was worth it, The bus turned up exactly ontime and we were pleasantly surprised to see how new the bus was. Before setting off to make the next pick up we were given and bottle of water and what looked like ... read more
Day 3.... Got up early today, as had to check out from hotel by 11am, plus we had booked our ticket to the airport for 11am, want to try and check out the bus times to Rayong again so this will give us enough time as don't fly till 3.15pm. Had our first wander around 7-11 today, its the equivalent of a Spar store in the UK, has a bit of everything, plus, we love them.. We normally have a 7-11 run first thing in the morning, as you can get a good cup of coffee from there, but this time so far we havne't done that, again if your on a tight budget, check out this store, they have them everywhere in Thailand.. Went to catch our bus at 11am and it turned up more ... read more
