Just back from a cruise and volunteering in Roatan and Belize, and trying to figure out the most economical way of returning to both places yearly to volunteer. I am from Ontario Canada. Not sure if I should fly into Cancun to Belize then Roatan, or just to Roatan then Belize and home. Budget friendly, what are my options

Visited December 7th, 2010 by Carnival Valor. The waters were a little rough so we ended up coming in at Spot Bay rather than the usual cruise port. Guess we're not shopping here. We were still picked up by a guide that was previously booked. Note to everyone, book your excursions before leaving home for half the price. Our excursion brought us to Stingray city with Soto's Tours. Both young guides were wonderful. The owner was not so polite or perhaps just sick of doing tours. They say if you kiss a stingray, you have seven years good luck, I figure if you kiss it on your birthday, you must be good for life. Off to the snorkeling, first time for my daughters and husband, someone had to stay in the boat and videotape, guess who? ... read more

We taught the little ones about Canada, and enjoyed a circle time with them.I had many items for loot bags for the children. Most were saved for Christmas gifts. Another brother/sister team from the boat donated twenty NY backpacks. My girls spent a few hours in the cabin aboard the ship putting together the items to be delivered. This was likely the highlight of the cruise, as we really got to see the culture. The shops along the cruise pier were wonderful, although we didn't have time to look ... read more

Yes, I do agree, while cruises are fantastic and all inclusive, except of course the shore excursions, six hours in a port really just gives you a taste of culture, or shopping, or excursion, or simply party on the pier. Ahead of time, I contacted guests on the ship, asking them to bring along a few things for the children in port. We visited Roatan on a rainy morning. Luckily the weather brightened. We arrived at Sandy Bay after hiring a driver from the port. We spent time at a free education library, Pier, where we met Camilla, an absolutely lovely volunteer who coordinates the library. Roatan is beautiful, Coxen hole not so much, but a real eye opener. We ziplined with Victor Bodden, and played with monkeys. Later a well needed drink at Fosters, a ... read more
