South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu May 24th 2007

Yesterday, we woke up early in our stinky hotel (the bathroom smelled so bad of mold that we were retching as we brushed our teeth) and headed for the bus to M.P. at 5am. We got the first bus at 530 and were the 3rd people through the gates to the lost city of the Incas. A thick mist shrouded the city, rendering it invisible. We could see the steps in front of our face, and climbed to what we thought might be the guard hut, as it is called by Hiram Bingham. This is a vantage point far above the main city allowing a great view, should the mist lift. The llamas and alpacas that are the only residents of this city were also here, grazing. And more and more people were coming up and ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Aguas Calientes May 23rd 2007

Preface this with that I love traveller's towns sometimes. The happy hours, the cybercafes, the travellers everywhere to chat with. Udaipur was like that, and San Ignacio in Belize too. Today we took the train to Aguas Calientes from Cusco. It was a long ride with a few beautiful vistas, but mostly territory we had covered before in our Sacred Valley tour yesterday. But at the end, we began seeing mountains covered in green foliage, misty mountaintops, and descended into the cloud forest that surrounds Machu Picchu. We were lucky enough to have gotten a hotel at the last minute - I had a pending reservation from two weeks ago that I never followed up on -we visited their office last night and ensured that we had two "matrimonial" rooms set up for us. When we ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Sacred Valley May 22nd 2007

We took a tour to the Sacred Valley today. Our bus tour picked us up at our hotel and we continued gathering two Brits, a pack of Japanese, and assorted other nationalities. Our tour guide Ignacio was okay. He wasn't bad, he wasn't good. He sure did get a lot of kickbacks. He wasn't anything special. In a way I wished we had gone on our own but taking combis and buses to all these towns would have been quite difficult to do in a single day. The first stop was the Pisac market. Although I thought I didn't like markets, this one was fun. It was fairly hassle-free, compared to India. I was able to get the alpaca mittens and hat I wanted, plus a gift or two. And I picked up some jewelry at ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco May 22nd 2007

I just lost my whole entry. That´s okay, although I went into some detail on some interesting neighborhoods, I was mostly writing about the boring part of our day. I´ll give a quickie here and return and write in it later. altitude makes it hard to breathe, spanish speaking lots, san blas very different from neighborhood around train station, got tickets, no hotels in aguas calientes for us, andean travel web donation great, valley tour set up for tomorrow and got maps and stuff, saw Qorikancha and lunch at inka hut. The altitude makes it difficult to breathe here. It is funny how you feel like an old lady, as you huff & puff climbing hills that would not give you pause back at sea level. Cusco seems to be built on the side of a ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco May 20th 2007

This journal is post-dated, and was written on my Palm Pilot while in Cusco. After a very long series of flights here, we finally arrived in Cusco at 7am actually. It is May 20th. Our flight took over a day. We also had a long layover in the Lima airport, where we hung out in the coffee shop and played UNO and other card games. It still felt like we hadn't left "Airport Country" (that country that extends around the world, only in airports - it's a special universe) until we arrived at the Cusco airport. Open to the outside, a single room serves as the arrivals lounge, with two luggage areas being served by men dragging wagons of luggage from the planes. There is the smell of jetfuel, from the planes landing. This is the ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Clare April 19th 2007

This post is mainly about Clare County though we are staying in Limerick. Well, when last I wrote, it was Monday and I didn't expect much excitement for the remainder of the week. Last night, some of the local lads took us out to a place called Copper & Spice. The food was delish but I didn't think it worth writing about. Tonight, on the other hand, despite working until 6pm, we had an adventure. My co-worker's last night in Ireland is tonight, so we went out for a drive. Every site is marked by a brown sign from miles away. One of them sounded particularly intriguing, although I had never heard of it in my life. Craggaunowen. (Say that 5 times fast). We followed windy road after another until we stumbled upon its outer parking ... read more

Europe » Ireland April 17th 2007

As I mentioned in my last posting, I received a call from my co-worker, a funloving guy from my same homestate, who just happens to be staying at the same hotel. We went for a walk to go to Copper & Spice, a Thai-Indian place. Closed. Ended up walking for a while and stumbled upon The Precinct, something of a classic Irish bar. I ordered a Bulmer's (i.e. Magner's) cider and enjoyed that while my - heh - mate ordered a Beemish. And we chatted with the bartender, a very cute young fellow and it was about the most quintessential Irish experience you could have, much like ordering due capiccine y une brioche in Italy. The lovely bartender, Ross, recommended a restaurant - Luigi Malone's - with a variety of food. I had the canary island ... read more

Well, I've been here long enough that my own thoughts are in an Irish accent. That is to say, about 12 hours. I arrived this morning after a sleepless flight, and checked in at our hotel - the Clarion Limerick. Hard to miss, really. We saw it from miles away and just headed in the general direction of the modernist tower over the Shannon. I don't think the Irish breakfast agreed with me. I'm a bit sick today. I must say, their bacon is phenomenal. It's like thick-cut ham. I filled up on the breakfast buffet so that I wouldn't have to worry about lunch. After breakfast, I took a short nap and then cleaned up and headed out into Limerick. Luckily there are handy brown signs directing the aimless tourist like myself to the various ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Verona September 6th 2006

We arrived in Verona this morning. Already I like it more than Padua. It has lots of wide avenues, marble sidewalks, and huge piazzas. The piazza Bra where the old Roman Arena is located is as large as Piazza San Marco. It is damn hot here. We are wilting in the sun. It is around 95 degrees. Today we walked all over, seeing the roman arena, Juliettes House and stood on her balcony, many palazzos and churches from the outside, and then the long long walk to the Chiesa San Zeno ' well worth it. San Zeno was built in the 6th century and has been added to, but retains a peaceful and old feeling. Our hotelis awesome. We were upgraded to a suite! It is locatd right between the big piazzas ' piazza erbe and ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Padua September 5th 2006

Today we are here in Padova, representing the first time we have gone some place new in Italy. Since Friday, we have been in Venice, that was just as wonderful as the last time we were there, and more comfortable. Yesterday, we went on a wine tour of the Venezia Friuli region, with the Collio wines mostly. These are wines grown on collinas or aka hills. Friuli produces many white wines and a few reds. One is the sweet pignoli, which is developed from a disease on the grapes and can only be made in this area. Another here is the Tocai Friuliano, in which they have lost against the Hungarian Tokay to keep the name of their wine, a sweet white that will now be called Friuliano instead. We had a wonderful lunch in a ... read more
