Back in Newquay. Unusual style accommodation here, quite hostel in the feel. Certainly not the Savouy but fine. They changed the towels and tidied up which wasn’t really necessary but still appreciated. Breakfast was fine with some cooked options but plenty of fruit, cereal and yogurt and even toast and crumpets that you can cook yourself so you get them exactly how you like them and when you want them. Novel idea! Walked to the tidal bridge today, fully expecting it to be underwater. It was. Who designed a bridge to be impassable at high tide and even impassable a couple of hours either side of high tide? We couldn’t even see it. That means a short walk to the ferry as the only other reasonable alternative. The unreasonable alternative is almost 4 miles of road ... read more

Bun. The first photo is for you. Pub and defibrillator in one location, does it get any better? We were here 3 days and I know my way around, know the beers and ciders pretty well, know the menu and order with confidence (easy mussels and something else), know the staff and really know the schedule but I never saw the defibrillator! But I didn’t need it either. More mussels last night, enjoyed as usual. Then some fish and peas and chips and peas and salad and peas! Too many peas! Would have gladly traded some for some salad but… Probably because we’d not long ago had a Cornish pasty (hard to believe I know) we were more than filled to dolly’s wax. Taxi back to Porthcothan was good, jovial driver with plenty of opinions about ... read more

Yes, more mussels. And a Rock Pale Ale.
Have you ever seen so many peas?

Yes we have been in Padstow for 3 days! We walked out today and to a place called Porthcothan which is pronounced like ‘poor cousin’ but with a bit of a lisp and a coarse, gravelly voice. Suffice to say nobody knows of it (even around here) and because accomodation is scarce there we are back again in the ‘Old Ship’ for another night. After walking 19km the taxi got us back here in 15 minutes! A little soul destroying and sole destroying! Yes we went to Rick Steins signature restaurant last night. Julie had scallops and then salmon and I had the fish and shell fish soup (flavoured with tomato and saffron) followed by the Malaysian fish curry (one of the signature dishes here). The restaurant is sumptuous and elegant although the clientele dress standards ... read more

Padstow or because Rick Stein is so ubiquitous and omnipresent here it is referred to as Padstein! I have enjoyed his pasty significantly more than I thought I would. His recipe stated he uses swede but I’m pretty sure it was parsnip with meat pieces. The meat is cut not minced and it was pleasantly peppered so I thought the pasty was very good. Pasties are everywhere here, there are 3 consecutive shops all selling baked goods and all specialising in ‘real Cornish pasties’. They are all in Mill Square, Padstow, Cornwall so their claims may be legitimate. Everyone here has a pasty, an ice-cream or some fish and chips. As far as I know Rick Stein does not make ice cream although he does sell it. The line at his fish and chip deli was ... read more

Heading away from the legend of King Arthur and the tacky tourist stuff that accompanies him. It cost £20 to enter and really most of the complex is in ruins except for the new bridge which is spectacular and the ‘Arthurian’ sculpture that we glimpsed from afar. We were lucky to get so close to the bridge and that was only because we were early and the ticket booth had not opened. We just went in until they came then obviously left. There was a small grass fire right on the path which the fire fighters were busy making safe and putting out. We thought it quite insignificant but you can see smoke in some of the photos and the smoke was clearly visible for miles (literally) and even the day after it was still visible ... read more

King Arthur you have much to answer for. From ‘Excalibur’ plastic swords and plywood crossbows the streets here are alive with tacky tourist souvenirs that scream a crossover between English legend and Chinese cheapness. Despite our expectations our meals here were very good. Thankfully we steered clear of the King Arthur’s Arms and found a pub that had good beer and good food. Thinking that vegetables would be a foreign word here we were pleasantly surprised despite the fact I ordered a 3 meat dish. I had a good carrot (aren’t all carrots at least good), some good roast potatoes (aren’t all roast potatoes at least good) and some red and green cabbage. Cauliflower gratin was meant to accompany the meal but… The pork, beef and lamb roast were tender, succulent and quite delicious and the ... read more

Near Boscastle anyway. Tomorrow we walk through Boscastle so that’s as close as the blog knows. Bude to Crackington Haven was meant to be a bit shorter and a bit easier but it did not feel it. Certainly we finished before 4 o’clock but the walk was quite tiring and quite demanding. It’s taken 2 icy-poles and a swim to recover. We are in the local pub but things are busy here, we’ e met other walkers who could not find accommodation here and have had to catch a bus and/or taxi out to find accommodation somewhere. We know we pay for the service and that the prices have risen considerably over the years but that service has been dependable and gives us much peace of mind. The pub here is old but obviously some sections ... read more

No longer do I need to take photos of English showers and ask a NASA graduate to interpret the buttons, switches, knobs and dials! They all seem to work now. Some have been really good, strong pressure and almost infinitely adjustable. The only grumble is that with some you can not get just cold water. I always attempt a cold shower for my legs because it’s good for them but it’s not always possible. But we’ll done England your showers have improved immeasurably. But they are still small! I didn’t have enough room in the shower for my cold bottle of cider. Bigger problem than it sounds! Even Julie has knocked over half a pint before shower time, that’s an indication of how how tough today was. The elevation gain was almost 1500 m. Assuming a ... read more

Goodbye Clovelly. Our brief but eventful time there is now behind us. With misplaced luggage, an incorrect room, no hot water, no yogurt and no bananas it sounds disastrous but really it was pretty good. Immediately upon finishing my cereal I was informed some yogurt had come down on the supply sled but… The hotel sound more like Fawlty Towers than the New Inn however it was OK. Up and out of Clovelly then really it was up, around, down, around, over, up and down for the rest of the day. Again we were lucky enough to find an icy pole place at about 2:30 so again that went down well. Otherwise there was very little on the track. Signage is really good although there’s so little else here it is not a tough job. We ... read more

Big walk day. Plenty of elevation gain which is simply walking talk for lots of ups and downs. And about 20km again which when matched with the ups and downs is about right. Leaving at 9:00 sees us arrive just after 4:00 which is good. Not easy but good. The ups and downs correspond with streams or rivers meeting the sea so it’s all understandable and all geographically correct but it doesn’t make the walk easier! The track here is easy to follow as there is so little else around. A holiday park was our only detour and that was for icy-poles so we were happy about that. There were a few people on the track but significantly fewer than on the weekend. Those we saw were camping nearby and going for an ‘English walk’. We ... read more
