Well all is ‘ancient history’ now. Back home, jobs sort of done and even almost ready for back to tutoring time. Not that the garden is back to some semblance of normality but it has at least been tackled. Lee has taken pity on me and not yet taken me to the nursery to get plants to replace those that did survive our absence. It will happen but I get a little reprieve. I have a bizarre collection of weeds in containers spread around the yard, of course it’s not green waste week. Strange how weeds grow like crazy yet ‘real’ plants wither and die under the same conditions! I’ve started walking Janus again but around a reduced course as he’s not quite accustomed to the 10 km yet. His holiday mum said he was out ... read more

We’re up in the air again. Smooth check in, well under the luggage allowance (which is 31 kg, which seems a lot) and cruising along at 35000 ft. There was a trick when we saw our gate and the final boarding call but it was just ‘Greek’! Our gate, our flight number, our airline but the final call was for the previous flight from that gate and had not been amended. Only mild panic but really no drama as we knew that over an hour was left before scheduled take off. Flying Etihad as we did on the way over but currently on the A320 which is a baby for their fleet and not one I expect to take us home. It’s just under a 5 hour flight to Abu Dhabi and most of that time ... read more

Tourist time for its up for breakfast by 7 o’clock, out the door by 7:40 and up the Dionysius Gate (because the majority of tourists use the main or northern gate) by opening time. No queue at all and no discount for 65 plus year olds since Britain left the EU (I can pretend to be British I can’t pretend to be French, Portuguese or really any other EU nation) so the Greek Government has my €20. You can pay to skip the queues and in peak time or peak season it may be worth it but our walking guide mentioned that now it’s not worth it. The Acropolis is wonderful but the Parthenon and a couple of accompanying buildings (the Theatre of Dionysius, The Temple of Nike and the Caryatids on the Erecteion (oops I ... read more

Despite having yoghurt, muesli, fruit, juice, several pastries and coffee for breakfast I set off on my food tour. Leaving the eggs, bacon, breads etc was a good decision, well not really I’ve become so accustomed to not having that English style breakfast I no longer really even think about it. Perhaps I should have had less of everything though because a focus of the tour was on sampling. Met Trevor, an English trained chef who has lived in Athens for almost 20 years at Syntagma Square (doesn’t everyone met everyone there), and set off on the Athens Food Adventure. First stop probably 2 metres away! And that’s the tone for the tour. Little walking, lots of eating. Only 3 in the group and that’s why my take away bag was choc a block full. We ... read more

How good is Athens? Rhetorical question really. I love it. Everywhere are reminders of just how special this place is. Be it the history of the Olympics, the marathon, the Romans, the Byzantines, the great Greek thinkers (well the big 3), the Ottomans, even King Ludwig of Bavaria and particularly his son (first king of Greece) and I haven’t even mentioned the Acropolis or the Parthenon! It is so good to walk around. I’m certainly not the only one walking around, the streets are full of tourists and from all over the place. The walking tour I did had more Germans and Dutch than Aussies and they were not the only nationalities. Again the tour was pretty good. They have to be at least OK or they don’t make as much on tips. In Greece the ... read more

By taxi, by train and by plane, all modes of transport have lead us to Athens. And despite just about having to sell my kidney to pay the taxi fare from the airport I love it. Having visited years ago I had an impression of Athens based on that visit and on what I’ve read and gleaned and often and frequently the impression and the reality do not match. Here first impressions (after the airport in the middle of the night) do. The skyline from the rooftop garden of our hotel is the equal of any city vista I’ve seen anywhere. It is so evocative of so many concepts and I love it. It is truly inspiring. I’m eagerly anticipating a couple of walking tours I have booked and can’t wait to get amongst what the ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Northern » Vila Nova de Gaia October 11th 2022

On the fast train to Lisbon but not travelling fast yet as we are still in the suburbs of Vila Nova de Gaia. Modern and comfy with functional and fast wifi connection all has gone smoothly since we left the shat! That’s half ship, half boat but I don’t think the name will stick. Boip is probably worse though. The windows here are big scenic ones but I share mine with the only person in the entire carriage that’s pulled his down! There must be 80 passengers in this carriage, half of whom sit next to the window and I share with the 1 in 40 that pulls the blinds. I might try the half centimetre every few minutes sneak up technique, we’ll see. The driver has just ‘put the foot down’ and we are gaining ... read more

South side of the Douro so we are in Vila Nova de Gaia not Porto. Technical difference but important to locals! No one wants to be called a ‘tripe eater’ when they’re not! Talking food the ship served a ‘francesinha’ on board today. Poor substitute for the real thing and significantly smaller but it probably meant considerably fewer heart attacks than serving good ones. After breakfast we walked across the Luis l Bridge to the cathedral and then to the station. All I’d seen before but with a guide I had a few aspects explained or expounded so it was worthwhile. Additionally the bus picked us up and drove via a fairly circuitous route back home so I saw a few sights outside of my walking radius. We also went to a port warehouse, Sandemans, one ... read more

Close to Porto and getting closer. Overnight at Pinchoa, I think the spelling is correct but it doesn’t matter because Portuguese pronunciation is full of hard sounds, eow, tricks and traps. As long as I have my 2 words and then expresso and nata (those delicious Portuguese custard tarts) I will be OK. Again the Burcher muesli was absent at breakfast so I had to make do with orange juice and sparkling wine. Well after 2 of those I was over it but evidently someone with more influence than me must have asked for some because muesli suddenly appeared. So after 2 sparkling, some muesli, a pancake, 2 small croissants and coffee it was time to make Lee her take-away breakfast. I thought she may like a sparkling start to her day as well and because ... read more

Actually in a lock as I type so not expecting to be able to post for a while. From memory the gorges will feature as the predominant landscape soon and that too will preclude posting so again it may be typing time for a while and possibly posting time quickly when I can. It’s just after breakfast, it’s always just after some meal or just before another meal when on board. It’s coolish but not cold, I’m getting dripped on from the lock wall but we’ve just started to move so the drips will be ancient history, now are ancient history. Temperature today is expected to get to 30 degrees and there’s not a cloud in the sky. Me and all my friends (well one of them) are on the top deck for the lock process. ... read more
