Matthew's dance troupe was performing onboard the Royal Caribbean ship Majesty of the Seas. Transportation to and from Miami was up to each individual family, so we headed out in the mini-van for the 3-day road trip. The highlight of the road trip for me was when we stopped for lunch at a Steak N Shake in Alabama. It really took me back to when I lived in the Midwest. Our crew for this trip included my wife Lisa, Matthew (13), Michael (12), Nancy (Lisa's mom) and myself. Lisa insisted on using the rooftop luggage container even though I felt it was unnecessary. Once we picked up Nancy and all her luggage, I quickly saw the wisdom in using it. In Miami, we stayed at the J.W. Marriott downtown. We arrived there two days before we ... read more

Matthew's dance troupe performed the first night. They were well received! Our first port-of-call was Nassau, The Bahamas. We bypassed the Straw Market (which is tough to do when you have two die-hard shoppers in Lisa and Nancy) and rented mopeds instead. We rode around Nassau and got caught in a torrential downpour. Later in the day, we took the ferry over to the beach beside the Sheraton (very near Atlantis) and enjoyed the waters.... read more

We anchored offshore of the island owned by Royal Caribbean, Coco Cay. This is a coral island, and the cruise line has imported sand for the beaches and made many other improvements. Lisa and Nancy stayed on the beach while the boys and I went snorkeling offshore. There were many fish about, including a few stingrays.... read more

Our ship put in at Key West on Day 4. In the harbor was a private yacht owned by an NFL quarterback (we never figured out which one). We rented a street-legal golf cart to tour the town. As you might expect, it then rained heavily. Our cart stalled in the middle of a flooded intersection and we had to be rescued. We skipped the Hemingway house (how many 5-toed cats do you need to see?) and went instead to Sloppy Joe's. Matthew and Michael had fun spotting the many Ernest Hemingway look-alikes. After we ate, the women led us on a shopping spree (what else?). Key West is a wonderful town and we all decided we would like to return someday.... read more

On the way home, we stopped in Destin. The boys enjoyed the go carts, and later we would go to the beach. Destin has beautiful, sugar-white sandy beaches. From here we drove on to spend a couple of nights in New Orleans. In New Orleans, we took the boys to the aquarium, and then we all went to the French Market where we shopped (what else!). We spent the remainder of the evening in the French Quarter and on Bourbon Street. As usual, there were many street performers about. Most notable was a character dressed in all black with black wings. The boys and I got a kick out of Lisa, as she was very afraid of him and crossed to the other side of the street to avoid him.... read more
