First, I have never wanted to go to Disney World. I hate, HATE scary rides. I have been to Carowinds several times and always end up holding peoples purses while they go screaming by. But my fiancée has a Disney heart. He loves Disney World as much as I hate scary rides. I am learning the key to all good relationships is to work it out. In an effort to lose some weight before I get married I agreed a couple of months ago to run the Disney Princess half marathon with a friend. I love to travel but do not plan very well. I cannot express how blessed I am to be marrying someone who will plan out our trips. They are always amazing. Pete happily booked hotel rooms and made dinner reservations. I began ... read more

40-Acre Rock. Tucked away in Lancaster South Carolina is a trail well known to the locals but off the beaten path for day hikers. 40 Acre rock is a gem of hiking path, it is not hard, and is a fun day trip. If you are not from Lancaster it’s a fun drive through South Carolina backwoods to reach these out of the way paths. 40-Acre Rock is a part of the Flat Creek Heritage Preserve. ON the trails to top you will see waterfalls, caves and a beaver dam. The main attraction, however, is at the top of the trail when you emerge from the forest to a flat rock that allows the hiker to see for miles. Named 40 Acre rock, the rock is not 40 acres, but measures 14.7 acres, and rather looks ... read more

Columbia, SC I have been busy this last year with a full time job and finishing my masters. This has not allowed for time to travel. I have finished my Masters in Secondary education and I hope to find I teaching position starting next semester. Until I start a teaching job in August I have time to travel (on a tight budget), take pictures ,and write. Columbia, SC I have been lived in Columbia for six years. There are really a lot of interesting things to see and do in Columbia. The first and most obvious one is Riverbank Zoo. I did not appreciate the Zoo when I was little but now that I am older I actually enjoy it. I went to the Zoo on the first warm weekend of spring with my new boyfriend ... read more

I have always considered myself a southern belle. When people make the quizzical comment you are from the south? Or I would never have known or you don’t have an accent I get kind of offended. I love the South. I am very southern. I grew up on a large piece of property where we had a garden and a big house. I have lots of brothers and sisters. I eat fried chicken and say y’all on occasion. There are so many stereotypes that emerge about growing up in a southern state that come from watching to many movies such as Gone with the Wind or Sweet Home Alabama. The charm of growing up southern is the myriad of small towns that make up the southern mystic. I discovered this fact while on one of ... read more

This is my favorite time of year. The end of one year and the beginning of another. But that's not why I love it. I love it because of all the lists. I love lists. I love making them, reading them, pretending that the things on them are going to get done. This time of year there is a list for everything: Top song of the year , best photos of year, best movies of the year. I love it! This year was especially great because there were lists for the best of the decade. I also love making new years resolutions. I love making a list of all the things I would like to see happen in the next 365 days. My previous lists have included: apply to college, graduate from college, run a marathon, ... read more

Life is not always about the big things such as big trips. Small trips can be just as much fun. Now that I have joined the adult world with a real job, meaning it pays in dollars and has health insurance, I don't have time to travel. However, with tons of new friends and reconnecting with old ones I find my life to be very full and exciting. I am learning to appreciate the small things. With a three-day weekend I was able to take a day trip with my Allie, Lisa and Gabe to Huntington Beach. Known for Atalaya, the picturesque, Moorish-style winter home of Anna Hyatt and Archer Huntington, sculptress and philanthropist, respectively, who left the park and adjacent Brookgreen Gardens as their legacy. There is something about sitting on a beach and watching ... read more

Colorado! If you are athletic and love nature then this is the place for you. The scenery is amazing. Some times you forget that nature can be so dramatic. Flat Flat Flat and then the mountains are the only things that block your view. Because the land is so flat the mountains appear much closer than they actually are. I was amazed at the flatness. Land as far as the eye can see. Houses sit huge tracks of land. We drove from the Denver airport to Boulder where the University sits at the base of the Flat Irons. What a breath taking view! The mountains of North Carolina will never be the same. I set off on this adventure to visit one of my oldest and best friends from high school who is living in Boulder. ... read more

I gave up working at the portrait studio and I am now trying my hand at teaching history. The day to day tasks of getting students to sit still in class and study can be tedious so i was very happy to be going on a field trip where they could learn in an active enviroment. I was so excited to be going to St. Augustine Florida on a field trip. What could be better for a history teacher who also loves to travel. I had to drive which was scary. But we made all the way down and back in one piece. The kids were amazing thank God for technology. They plugged in their video games I never knew they were there. We stayed on Anastasia Island on the beach. The students enjoyed swimming and ... read more

I can hardly believe that I have been home an entire year! The way I know this is only because we go the beach every year. It is the highlight of my year; it’s better than Christmas. This year we went to Edisto Island. We stayed further down the island on the sound. It was different. More wildlife then I remember. There were no waves, which was kind of weird. We stayed in a funny house where the kitchen and den were on the top floor. We shared a duplex with Ball Family on the other side. We brought our boat out for its maiden voyage on the open seas. I enjoyed the relative calm of the sound but got ridiculously seasick at the smallest waves. I think Grant wanted to sock me. I also fell ... read more

Well another Shadwell has graduated from the University of South Carolina. Congratulations, Rebecca! So to celebrate her academic achievement we headed to Charleston to participate in the very adult venue of Spoleto. What could be more grown up and educated then going to the opera? I am reminded of the book Little Women when Joe and her oldest sister get to go the opera and Amy is not allowed because she is to young. Going to Spoleto was not a purely selfish gift in that its on my, "To do before I die ", list. Rebecca likes Opera. Proof that college does broaden your horizons and make you a well-rounded person. My newly educated sister can make comments like," the lead soprano was very good or this opera was all recitative, (dialogue which is "sing-speak." ... read more
