Paul And Sarah

Right, this blog will follow our travels to South-east Asia and beyond. No idea where we're gonna go, no idea how long for, but it sure beats working!

Asia » Thailand » Eastern Thailand » Koh Chang May 16th 2011

Todays the final day of the trip and we've been sunning it up in Thailand on Koh Chang, an island near Cambodia for a couple of weeks. The original plan after Vietnam was to travel through Laos, and we even had flights booked for a final sojourn into Burma, but a million landslides and a visa rejection put paid to those ideas, which, to be honest, we're secretly happy about as it means we can just dump the bag and forget about everything So we ended up flying from Hanoi to Bangkok, where we spent a few days enjoying the city, eating loads of pad thai, seeing a few sights, buying cheap clothes and drinking too much. Then a short bus journey took us to Kanchanaburi, site of the film "The Bridge over the River Kwai". ... read more

So we arrived into Ho CHi Minh CIty (Saigon) in the early hours, and were immediately struck by quite how many Westerners there were walking around. Apart from a few places, like Kathmandu or Goa, we have been used to almost being on our own. Now, all of a sudden there's millions of us! Definitely not complaining though, more foreigners equals more locals speaking English, better transport options and most importantly more restaurants selling things like pie and chips and foot long hot dogs. Amazing. We spent three nights in Saigon, visiting the Reunifictaion Palace, War Remnants Museum and a Water Puppet Show, and then made our way into the Mekong Delta where we got shown around some local attractions. Again, it was a bit like a production line though - just follow the foreigner in ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Bohol » Tagbilaran March 23rd 2011

For the past three weeks we have been island-hopping around the Central Philippines. Its somewhat ironic that we have had no rain virtually for our entire trip but as soon as we get to the amazing beaches it starts to belt down! We first arrived in the capital of the region, a city called Cebu, and then got the first bus up to an island off the North Coast called Malapascua. Its a bit of a paradise, what with the golden sands and turqouise waters, and strangely it even had an Irish pub. Sarah did her first dive since qualifying way back in Indonesia (she saw loads but can't remember what they were), and we just relaxed, playing cards, drinking beer and chilling out. We also had our first introduction to the ladyboy scene. Seriously, half ... read more

Asia » Taiwan » Taipei March 2nd 2011

We are currently in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, and my word, what a place....But first the last few weeks of India which now seems like an age ago! Another overnight bus took us to Udaipur, the scene of the James Bond film Octopussy. We found maybe the cheapest room in the whole of India (192 rupees = 2.40pounds between us) and it even had a hot water shower! None of this filling up a bucket and tipping the cold water on your head malarky, this was a godsend! Sod looking around Udaipur, we spent about 3 hours each in the shower. Anyway, the city was typically Indian. Dusty, crowded, polluted etc. It also had a load of American tourists which was somewhat strange after so long seeing no one. The actual Lake Palace was cool ... read more

Asia » India » Daman & Diu » Diu January 23rd 2011

So New Year had come and gone, and it was time to give Northern India another go. Because the flights were way too expensive, we resigned ourselves to a nightmare overnight bus journey to Bangalore, 5 hours waiting on a train platform, and then 25 hours cross country to Mumbai. After not sleeping on the bus, we wanted a nice quiet train journey but no, instead the locals decided to play cards next to our bunks, while simultaneously practicing their English skills and trying to make conversation. Its frustrating sometimes - at least in China nobody had the ability to talk with us; now its impossible to have any time to yourself - people have no compunction about tapping you on the shoulder while you're listening to your ipod...and the conversation is always the same - ... read more

Asia » India » Kerala » Kovalam January 2nd 2011

So after lazing around for a month in Goa we were well and truly refreshed, and decided to blitz around Southern India for the 6 weeks leading up to xmas. First stop was a town called Hampi, which looks like a cross between the Flintstones and an Indiana Jones movie set. It was so beautiful and the people really friendly. The main attractions in Hampi are a load of temples built into the rock and the town has the slogan "where stones tell history in silence". We spent a good couple of days exploring but, of course, being tight we decided that we didn't need a guide or tuk-tuk driver. No, we thought we were more than capable of seeing the sights ourselves. Big mistake. According to the Lonely Planet book there's a footpath linking the ... read more

Asia » India » Goa » Calangute November 17th 2010

Well we are now in sunny Goa and have been chilling out amd relaxing on a beach for about the past month or so. Its brilliant not having to live out of a rucksack for a while, and to forget about having to book trains and buses, and getting from A to B. The original plan was a fortnight in a nice air con apartment but unfortunately the electrics were all over the place (resulting in a fire-ball over the pool), and we had to move a tad up the road. 2 weeks there, and 2 more weeks in a different apartment (not air con tho god damn) and we feel like were ready to move on Anyway, thinking back we entered Nepal after our debacle with the Chinese border, for a nice leisurely 6 hour ... read more

When we last wrote we had just seen the adorable pandas in Chengdu and we decided to spend our last month in China heading West. Our first stop was Songpan, a mere 12 hour bus ride away which included seeing loads of landslides and even a punch up between our driver and another driver! In Songpan we did a 3 day horse trek that invloved camping out in the wilds....seemed like a good idea at the time! On the first day Paul managed to get the only donkey and Sarah got majorly sunburnt despite using factor 40 suncream. By the third day we were both so sore from the saddles that we were walking like John Wayne and Sarah's lips had swollen up Lesley Ash style from the sunburn! After Yangshuo we went to Hong Kong but instead of the usual policy of staying in the City, we hot-footed it over to one of the outlying islands called Lamma. This place was wicked as for the first time in a few months we finally got to relax on a beach. Of course we then had to take a ferry back to the mainland every time we wanted to do something but this was more than worth it. It was also nice having just a bit of "British" again. For example, I got my baked beans, Sarah cooked a Jacket potato and it was just nice people being able to communicate with people again! While in HK, we went up Victoria Peak (good), went to Macau for the day (rubbish), found an H&M (strange) and went ... read more

Sorry for the delay in posting this....internet connections havent been good or we've been too pressed for time! After the Yangtze River Cruise we stayed in Yichang, a horrible city thats like one giant building site, in a horrible hostel - the only up side being that it was the night of Englands first game in the World Cup so Paul got free beer from the owner as they stayed up until 2am to watch it! The next day, 20 mins before we boarded a train for our 30 hour journey to Kunming (seemed like a good idea at the time!) Sarah got a stomach bug and was throwing up in a bin in the train station (only in China can you do that and no one even blink an eyelid) Luckily it was a 24 ... read more
