The city of Jinju, an hour and a half from Busan, hosts a week long lantern festival every year along their river with a myriad of activities and events organised. We'd planned to spend the whole day in Jinju sightseeing and participating in the activities, but due to a very late night the night before it was 6pm when we finally arrived! First stop was dinner and then we walked to Namgang river for the lantern festival. The tradition of floating lanterns on Namgang River in Jinju City dates back to the 1592 Japanese invasion of Korea. In October 1592, during a battle between Japanese and Korean soldiers around Jinju Fortress, Jinju people flew lanterns high up in the sky as a military signal and communication tool with soldiers outside the fortress, while floating lanterns and ... read more

Chuseok holidays had arrived and myself and a friend had organised to go away hiking in the north of the country. Chuseok is basically Korean thanksgiving, most people travel home to be with their families and pay their respects to their ancestors. People prepare food as offerings and then go tidy their ancestors graves. My co-teacher Shasha told me that she would be very busy cleaning, cooking and visiting all her families houses - she doesn't consider it much of a holiday! It is customary to give and receive gifts at this time, so in the days leading up to Chuseok I was given an presentation box from my principal containing three bottles of olive oil and six cans of tuna; two pairs of sports socks from the vice-principal; a box of white lotus tea from ... read more

Today started out as a typical Friday morning, until I got to school! As soon as I arrived I spotted a load of vans and strange people walking around. All the 4th grade girls rushed up to tell me that something called "Golden Time" had some to school for the day and that it was "drama". I had the impression that it was a theatre group that had come to put a show on for the school. There was some interesting messages popping up on the school's messaging service - a helicopter would be landing in the yard at the end of 2nd period! 20mins into our class it landed, kicking up a massive cloud of dirt and dust as it did. As the rotors wound down, an ambulance raced in through the gate, circled the ... read more

Our first weekend in Busan, and most of us meet up at the Sports Complex in the afternoon to watch the Lotte Giants baseball team. We were all a little too prompt - we had a few hours before things started, so we spent this time sitting outside the stadium literally on the street drinking beers and chatting. We ate some random prawn flavoured crisps, like a lot of things here seem to be they were sweet! We also bought some kimbap (rice and veg in a seaweed roll) from some nearby adjummas, very tasty and a bargain at w3,ooo. Inside the stadium was fantastic, the atmosphere was electric and beers were the same price as outside! The giant screen kept flashing up shots of the players with their statistics, WWE style. They had so many ... read more

Anneyung haseyo!! So the first week of my new life in Korea was spent in the KT Human Resource Centre in the city of Daejeon. EPIK organises a week long orientation for new in-coming teachers, to introduce us to life in Korea as well as work on teaching ideas. About 300 of us, from all walks of life, descended upon Daejeon, bound for cities and provinces all over Korea. It was a very strange and intense week. We were woken up at half 7 every morning with the exact same intercom announcement: "Good morning EPIK teachers, this is the announcment from the head office, breakfast will be served..." (More annoying for the fact that we had our alarms set for 8am, no need people!!) We also had a nighttime anouncement telling us to be back in ... read more

The six weeks I had at home after returning from Spain flew by in a blur of visiting, eating and drinking, and before I knew what was happening, I was at Dublin Airport en route to South Korea. I had successfully managed to squeeze my allocated 23kgs into my new rucksack, 7kgs into my cabin bag, aswell as another 5kg into my handbag and a camera bag to boot. It still hadn't kicked in that I was embarking on the longest section of the biggest journey of my life...not sure that something like this ever does!! My flight took me first to Abu Dhabi for a 15hour stopover, where luckily I managed to spot two guys also on the EPIK program, Denis and David from Cork. We were able to leave our bags, find our way ... read more

When I think of Malaga, I think of one thing - holiday resorts. The last leg of my trip was a day in Malaga before flying home to Ireland and my expectations were low. Fortunately I was proved to be wrong! I was staying in a hostel in the Old Town within easy walking distance of the centre. Malaga's history outdates Cadiz. Founded around 770BC by the Phoenicians, it has seen rulers from Ancient Carthage, the Roman Empire, and Arab Empire before coming under Christian rule again after the Reconquista. The archaeological remains and monuments all these eras have had the effect of making the city "open museum", displaying its rich history of more than 3,000 years. After setting myself up in the hostel (with people again yay) I walked downtown to see what the city ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Granada June 30th 2012

Granada has not proved as interesting as I expected, but that's only probably because I have spent so much time by myself! My hostel room is very stange, my bed and another are in a kitchen, and three other beds are in a separate room with no air-con. No-one was sitting out in the hot and sticky communal areas so I resigned myself to sitting in my kitchen under the air-con instead until it got cooler in the evening. Seems like I'm in the room by myself! Luckily the hostel is in the centre of things so walking from place to place is easy. On my first evening, I went out for a stroll and ended up watching Spain v Portugal in a restaurant on the street. Nothing like watching a Spanish soccer match in Spain! ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Córdoba June 27th 2012

It was a sad day leaving Cadiz, but I had my bags all packed and ready for the long road home! I was transporting rum, sherry and wine home with me, which made for very heavy bags. It was after 6pm when I arrived at Cordoba, and VERY HOT. The muggy heat nearly bowled me over when I got off the bus. I got a taxi to the hostel and met my roomates immediately - two Americans called Mike and Chu. It was way to hot to go outside (43deg) so we all stayed in under the air-conditioning until after 9pm. And even then it was still ridiculously hot! Chu and I went out for a walk around La Juderia, the old Jewish quarter in Cordoba. The famous Mesquita is very close to where we're staying ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Lisbon & Tagus Valley » Lisbon June 21st 2012

After nearly six months of teaching, I'm on holiday! Ben and I had planned a short trip to Lisbon before he went home, and then I would do a short tour of Andalucia on my way to the airport. Our plan for the trip was to spend the day in Seville sight-seeing before getting an overnight bus to Lisbon, but of course the trip wouldn't be complete without a Ben 'n' Orla transport adventure! The bus was full and we would have had to wait until the next night. Luckily we took a few minutes to discuss our options and found another bus company that would take us there that day. Which only gave us 45mins before the bus left! We arrived in Lisbon around 9pm and embarked on a mission to find a hostel. Luckily ... read more
