Since my last post about a month ago, I have had my last day of school and entered into my summer vacation :) To kick it off I spent 3 weeks on a bus with 56 other exchange students as we traveled all around Europe. I'll try and give the highlights from each city we stopped in... First Stop: Berlin. We saw the Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie. It's one thing to read about events in history books and to learn about them in school. After visiting Berlin, we discovered how different it is to actually stand in the place where history happened. To see the Berlin Wall and imagine the struggles that the city of Berlin has seen really shocked me and I feel as though I have a better understanding now. My friends and ... read more

Hello again! Since I've gotten home from Barcelona, I've been mostly planning for my quickly upcoming summer. However, I'll give you the highlights :) The end of April was fairly relaxed, just going to school and "doin' my thing" The May weather in Denmark is very...unpredictable. Some days it is warm and sunny, and others it's raining and actually quite cold. However, my friends and I take full advantage of the warm and sunny days, and looking forward to more ahead. Something I have noticed about Danes, is that discussing the weather isn't just a "filler" for conversations. It's actually something frequently and seriously discussed. On May 2nd, a GSE team of 6 Americans from Missouri visited our Rotary Club. I accompanied them as we showed them some highlights of Aarhus, including the Queens Summer Residence ... read more

"At rejse er at leve" - H.C. Andersen. "To travel is to live" - H.C. Andersen. Since my last post, I've been slightly busy ;) The last week in March we had Easter Break. We went and visited my host dad's parents which was very cosy :) They also showed me Legoland, which was epic of course. :) We also visited my host mom's parents at their summer house, which was of course beautiful. My host family took me to Copenhagen where we saw Louisianna (an art museum) I went shopping with my host mom, and we took a canal tour of Copenhagen. The sun was shining, so the canal tour was absolutely beautiful, and I got to see a lot of Copenhagen. Then on April 11th, my class and I left for a week in ... read more

March 22nd 2010

Spring is starting, and so now my schedule is becoming even busier... Since my last update, I have paid for my school trip to Barcelona (which begins on April 11th) And I've also paid for my 3 week Euro Tour which begins in late May. I do not have the words to describe how excited I am for both of these trips! So much has been happening in the past month, and it all goes by so quickly, so I will try to just go over the highlights. We had a "Get2gether" weekend with all 200 exchangers in Copenhagen. The theme for this Get2gether was "Fitness" Rotary organized classes for us including yoga, aquatics, BodyPump, and Spinning. We worked out during the day and hung out with each other at night. It was very cozy and ... read more

Half of my exchange year is over. How did that happen SO fast?! The idea that my time here is quickly and surely escaping me is not something I'm content with. So many great things have happened, and so many more great experiences are on the way. First off, we have Newbies now!! The girls seem like fun, they're trying to gain their footing in this crazy country, and that's all right. I've been visiting some pretty neat things here in Denmark. On Thursday, my host parents took me to a modest museum. There were some really cool things about Greenland (it used to belong to Denmark) and some awesome Viking displays. The pride and joy of the museum however, is that it houses the Worlds Best Preserved Bog Corpse. A very well preserved 2000 year ... read more

And so the winter weather just keeps at it, eh? I haven't been too busy, but I suppose I'll update anyway. Recently after my last post, I joined Boxing Training. That was a good choice too. It's so much fun and a lot harder than I thought. There are 3 trainers, one of which is a short Turkish man who always talks to me. He is just so sweet! But now that I've joined boxing, I am once again becoming the "anti fat exchange student" and I get to meet more people and have more experiences. It's an all around win. My Rotary Club had a meeting where we all went Bowling! So yes, I went bowling with about 38 old guys :P It was fun to see them relax and enjoy themselves. I won 100 ... read more

January 8th 2010

Now that all the holidays are over, I'll give a quick update. Every day up to the 24th was all about getting ready for Christmas. From buying and wrapping presents to setting up the Christmas tree to baking cookies. :) On the 24th, we all slept in. At around 16.00 we went to church. We were supposed to be there for about an hour. There were So Many people there and the service consisted of singing songs and listening to the priest talk. However, our church service was cut short because a man sitting next to my host mom overheated and passed out. Luckily my host mom is a nurse, so she tended to him until the Ambulance arrived. So after our quite dramatic evening in church, we went home to dinner. We had a traditional ... read more

December 19th 2009

It's christmas season in Denmark!! Anyway, since my last post I have switched host families. I was rather nervous about it at first, but the whole ordeal was rather bittersweet. I left a good family, but I came to a good family as well. My new family is really awesome though :) I have also made Thanksgiving Dinner for all of my host families. That was an adventure. Not quite all of the food came out as expected, but it all tasted good. I was the only one who really liked the Pumpkin Pie, but oh well...more for me! :) Mostly, this past month has been all about christmas! It's so hyggeligt! We cut down oru own christmas tree, we made candles. They have calendar candles and you burn down a number every day until christmas. ... read more

So much has been going on! I'll just run through my journal and give the highlights :) Very recently after my last post, I had a week of Holiday. My host family too me to Hamburg and Amsterdam!! Amsterdam is probably one of the interesting and beautiful cities. There is so much to do! Yes including "Coffee Shops" and The Red Light District. Of which I did see. It was quite the cultural shock. The first day we were in Amsterdam we didn't do much sightseeing. We stuck to the shops and everyday non-tourist life. My host parents spend 2 years in Holland, so they are very knowledgeable. I also ate Snail and Bloodcake/Black Pudding. Quite interesting. I can't say that I would like to eat either of those again, although it was a fun experience. ... read more

Time for an update! It has been just one month since I've updated, yet it seems like it's been forever. Thus far I have just been living my life, ya know? I go to school, I hang out with my friends, and I try to live as much like a "normal dane" as I can. I've realized that in school every wednesday in my class is kagedag. aka: Cake Day! Every week somebody brings in cake. It's wonderful. Back in september, there was a man from Alabama/Canada here. 25 years ago when he lived in Alabama he was an exchange student in Denmark. Frands, my host dad, was his host brother. He came to visit, and it was pretty cool. He still knows danish well enough to communicate. I found out that I am living with ... read more
