This time you get 1 blog for 2 days, simply because I stayed in the same place for 2 days... And a bit late as the site refused to let me update the pics last night. After a night in Puebla, I was off early to catch the bus to Oaxaca. I got to the station at 10am and the next 2nd class bus wasn't until midday, so I opted for the more luxurious ADO which was a 4 hours trip and leaving at 10.45. That set me back 320 pesos (instead of 260) but I was kind of happy as the owner of where I'd stayed in Puebla had told me to count 400 pesos for the economy service. The landscape on the 4 hours journey was quite varied, from rugged deserts to ochre hills ... read more

So yesterday I was abandoning Queretaro to go to Puebla. I was quite looking forward to it as quite a few of the backpackers I had spoken to weren't going there, so I thought I might see a bit more original Mexican culture. I had asked the previous day at Queretaro's bus staion and had been told that I had to go via Mexico City as there were no directs to Puebla. And they alos told me that I had to change from Mexico city's Northern coach station to Poniente (also known as CAPO - bear this in mind for later). So I got a reasonably early start (left the hostel at 9.15) and got the camion to the station. There I bought my ticket on the 10.10 to Mexico City (158 pesos, economy service) and ... read more

Yesterday morning, I was leaving Guanajuato for Queretaro. I left the hostel at about 9am, wanting to be at the coach station for about 10, but in the end I was there for 9.20. I knew from the previous day's enquiries that there was a145 pesos bus at 10.30 and a 133 pesos bus at an unknown time. So I went to the cheaper counter to ask and was told there wasn't one until 6pm. My 3rd option was to get the 9.30 economico to San Miguel (where I was the day before) and then another from San Miguel to Queretaro. That would probably take longer but leaving an hour earlier might just mean the arrival time wouldn't be that different. And it only came in at 123 pesos over all. 22 pesos, better in my ... read more

Yesterday I was going on a day trip to San Miguel de Allende. Breakfast at Hostel Guanajuato was from 9am, so I left a bit before 9.30 and headed for the bus station on the local city bus. I was there before 10 and had the option of the economy bus for 73 pesos or luxury for 90 pesos, so I went for the economy option. Unfortunately, the next bus wasn't until about 11 so I had an hour's wait on my hands. I went outside and sat in the sun for a bit, starting to get used to the waiting times. As the time for the coach approached, I spotted a non-Mexican looking couple so I went and let on. They were Canadians from Vancouver Island and were, like me, off to San Miguel for ... read more

Today I'm leaving Guadalajara for Guanajuato. Everyone I have spoken to says Guanajuato is very beautiful, so I have high hopes. I will be staying there for 2 nights and intend to go for a day trip to San Miguel de Allende on the second day. This morning, I was again awake at the crack of dawn. Someone had arrived in the dorm late last night so I decided to stay in bed for a while to not wake her up. I got up at about 7.30, got ready, had breakfast, packed and left by 8.30. I asked the receptionist where to get the camion to the station and he said to get one to the centre on the next street and then one next to the Cathedral to get to Central Nueva. Got no problem ... read more

Hola a todos! Today I am going to tell you about my day in Guadalajara. It was about 6.30am when I woke up. It just seems to be the rhythm I have picked up... But breakfast wasn't until 9am, so I thought I'd use the time to catch up on the blog and e-mails. After breakfast, I washed some of my clothes and decided that trying to wash everything at once is not a good idea because chances are that the sink will be too small and anyway, my drying line isn't long enough for all my stuff. So I only did about half. I have to say that I have been pleasantly surprised by my fleece, which I have worn nearly every day and every night and doesn't even stink yet! In the end, it ... read more

Yesterday was always going to be a long day. I was leaving the lovely Morelia for a trip to Patzcuaro (an hour away) and then on to Guadalajara. The first problem with that plan was that there are no buses from Patzcuaro to Guadalajara so I had to go back via Morelia, so another hour and then 3 and half hours to “Guada”. I spoke to the guy from the Morelia hostel about going to Patzcuaro and he reckoned I needed 2 hours to see the village, but that then I absolutely had to go to Janitzio (which would take another hour), a little island on Patzcuaro's lake, apparently one of the must do if you're around the area. That meant I had to get an early start, but I also wanted my breakfast so I ... read more

Yesterday I left Mexico City to come to Morelia. I left the hostel shortly after breakfast and got the tube (luckily, Observatorio, the stop I needed was only only a few stops away and on the same line as the stop nearest the hostel) to get to the bus station called Poniente. I had the choice of chicken bus for 215 pesos – 6 hours or the luxury bus for 300 pesos – 4 hours. Well... I chickened out of the chicken bus! Mainly because I wasn't in Morelia for very long (leaving early the next morning) and it was nearly 10.30 already. So I paid my 300 pesos and got to Morelia for 2.30. From the bus station there, I wanted to get the bus to the hostel but all I knew was that it ... read more

I didn't get a chance to write yesterday because I was out in the evening, so there is a bit of catching up... Let's start with some things that have surprised me or caught my attention so far: The police presence in Mexico City is quite astonishing, I'm guessing it's to try and tackle the security problems and help the tourism, but that's just my guess because they are everywhere in the tourist zones: basically you will find 2 or 3 on every street corner and when you get to the really busy streets, there is just about one in front of every shop. On the first day, because we were trying to get to the centre without map and therefore had to ask for directions quite a few times, we asked the police whenever we ... read more

7.30 PM. First of all, let's briefly go back to yesterday night. My final flight landed in Mexico City at around 11.05pm and after filling in a couple of forms I got through immigration with no questions asked. Obviously, I had missed the deadline for my hostel pick up, but I had discovered earlier in the day online that the airport have what seemed like a decent taxi system. They have authorised taxis with booths in the arrivals hall. There's bit of competition and they're all calling you to get the business. I don't know why but I didn't even think of haggling (I discovered today that I should have) and picked one at random. They charge you at the booth what seems a price depending on the zone you're going to. For me it was ... read more
