Ah yes, the last day somewhere else. Bergen, it's been real, I really enjoyed all that you had to offer and I really wanted to take advantage of that for one last day. After breakfast at the hostel and a sad goodbye to the Scottish students, Shawn and I went to the tourist information centre to try and book our Norway in a Nutshell tour, the most popular in the country. Just my luck, and I had a funny feeling the night before, all of the trains in the afternoon to Oslo were booked up so we had to bail on that idea and change it up on the fly! Luckily we hadn't yet booked the hostel in Oslo so we still had some room to finagle. We decided it was best to go right to ... read more

My first full day in Norway DID NOT disappoint! After making some new friends at the hostel the night before, we all planned to do a fjord cruise together to get a real taste of what this gorgeous country has to offer. We were led a little astray as we tried to book the tour at maaaany different places, only to eventually end up starting a line at the docked boat an hour before it was supposed to leave to ensure we got our tickets! But we got on, and man oh man was it worth it. We drove through spectacular fjords (for those of you who don't know what a fjord is, it was also explained to me yesterday as a narrow passage of water with steep banks or mountains on either side) and snow ... read more

Picking up where I left off, my shuttle ride to the airport consisted of sleep, and more sleep. This time I got to see the building in the morning light, and it's some pretty cool architecture. I checked in on my phone on the bus (loving the free wifi on like all modes of transportation, it's dope!) so I was able to skip the self checkin madness inside the main entrance. After I dropped my bag I headed to duty free and bought some Icelandic chocolate with my remaining Kronas (except for enough for another chocolate bar on my way home, don't worry, I didn't forget about you mum ;)). An easy wait and I was on the plane to Bergen, my first stop in Norway. I grabbed the flybussen airport express and the driver said ... read more

We're gonna go 2-for-1 here cause I've been slacking, I apologize. Lots of travel and activity in the last 48 hours and the only free time if had is to sleep until now! We'll start with yesterday... My last day in beautiful Iceland ? I took the morning to sleep in after the late northern lights night, and then wander quickly into town to buy some post cards, yay! However I'm not sending very many only because the stamp costs 2x as much as the post card itself, aha! And then I almost died as a huge chunk of ice slipped off a roof RIGHT in front of me. The guy who slammed on his brakes to avoid it exchanged terrified glances with me! After that, I booked it back to the hostel for some lunch ... read more

Europe » Iceland » Southwest » Mosfellsbaer April 1st 2015

Soooooo... Yesterday was like the coolest day ever (Both experience wise and temperature wise, aha)! I was originally planning on another lazy day before my northern lights tour at night but decided against it after reading of mount Esja. Just 20km North east of Rekjavik, this is the most prominent mountain on the coastline that has paths maintained by the city that are followed by thousands of hikers each year. Both getting there and getting up was a challenge! It was such a beautiful day so insider mind walked a but to the bus stop around the corner and up the road. From there I caught the 15 towards Mosfellsbær where I thought I would transfer soon to the 57. Turns out it only comes every hour and I had just missed it :( So to ... read more

Yesterday was another excursion day for me...but first I had some time to kill so I walked in a different direction up some paths and was once again, without a doubt, rewarded with an incredible view. Just when you think there can't possibly be anything around the next corner, a perfect peak proves you wrong! But anyways, this time I opted for the Icelandic Horseback riding tour which turned out to be an pretty darn good choice. Not only was it a heck of a workout - I've never really ridden a horse before and they things go damn fast when they wanna catch up to the rest of the group, lol - but the views that we got were unlike any other! We wound our way up the side of a mountain which was plopped ... read more

Yesterday was a lazy day according to the Frenchmen in my room (probably because they walked into the room and I was in bed writing yesterday's blog at 11:00 ?)... But I got up and walked to the Viking Maritime Museum of Reykjavik. It's great how close in proximity everything is to each other... Close enough to be able to walk everywhere but far enough to get a heck of a lot of exercise, aha. The museum wasn't really what I expected but it was still pretty cool to learn about how the fishing industry has evolved in Iceland and how passionate they are about it! After a quick stop in Subway for lunch (I know, I know, it was cheap ok?!) I headed in what I thought was the right direction to the Nation Museum ... read more

Yesterday (the 28th) was a truly magical day. I opted into the golden circle that hits up 3 of Iceland's most beautiful sites. I lucked out and was put on a bus with 60ish year old guide, Fanny, who was incredibly knowledgeable and told her personal anecdotes of the country throughout the tour. This entry will mostly be recaps of what I learned from her - especially the fact that she without a word of a lie said "some people say it's fifty shades of grey, but Iceland is fifty shades of white" ? Iceland has 2 Geothermal plants, the bigger of the two being the second biggest in world. We drove past them both on our way and were informed that about 80% of the country is heated by geothermal energy that costs approximately $2 ... read more

So I'm here safely in Iceland, and wow is this a beautiful country already. I guess I'd better start with the plane ride tho... Sat next to this lovely couple from Sarnia who shared with me the story of their nephew travelling all around the world, a super intense version of what I'm doing. Short but sweet flight with complimentary Icelandic Glacial water and LEDs above the overhead compartments that simulated the Northern Lights (how freakin' cool is that?!). Anyways, now I'm on the bus on the way to Reykjavik and it's the most scenic bus ride I've ever been on, surrounded by snow covered mountains and the ocean right by. Oh Ya, just a little bit of snow here ;) Dropped my big bag off at the hostel because it was only 8am and I ... read more
