San Francisco its just 11am at the Opal Hotel on Van Ness - what to do in the next 3 hrs before getting the BART to SFO - airport? Well as my 3 day transport pass ended yesterday - it got hammered and I well got my $20 worth - it is definitely shanks pony and walking this morning. Down to Soma (South of Market St) and the San Fran Museum of Modern Art I think - fortunately it is half price until tomorrow 11th due to some reconfiguration - $15 would give me some pause re value! Then a bit of a wander around Soma for whatever the camera sees then back here, then walk back to Civic to catch up with BART (not Simpson) to SFO. So unless I am wireless and desperate at ... read more

San Fran - 9 June yes this is day zero minus one! - after a long bloggerama this morning finally out on a 38 trolley to check out 1805 Geary aka the Fillmore Auditorium - it may be a rock "sacred site" but it certainly does not look like one! simply a blank 3 storey brick building with a sign saying The Fillmore - no posters with coming attractions or nuthin' - check Wikipedia for the "real" story about the Fillmore and how it moved to the West venue nr Market etc and now seems almost a franchise, with sites in Denver and Florida etc. Then a 38 trolley back to the cable car at California St to ride it down the hill to the financial district. Then I walked across thru Chinatown, which is fairly ... read more

Tues. 8th - non-food update no doubt your tongues are all hanging out after the last overly foody entry - so you will have to put up with the meagre gruel that represents "the rest of yesterday". Having left the hotel pathetically late the day before, and no chance to get anywhere realistic beyond the Fisherman's Wharf tourist trap and a bit of the Embarcadero/Ferry area, thought it was time to get real on using the trasnport options available to me on the 3 day $20 "passport" - all buses, trolley and the cable car. Now forgive me, but the cable car is more of a pest than anything and I am the locals who try and get on it past the flocking tourists must be rather annoyed by it. Its just a picturesque means of ... read more

Tuesday 8 June oh dear only one real restaurant night to go! (cos Thursday will be getting whatever I can decent at LAX that is not burger and fries!). So buckle in for tonight's plat du jour which is from the area called Mission (otherwise take your knife and fork and leave now). A heavily Hispanic area in terms of traders, such as fruit and veg and supplies, but obviously some trendies creeping in restaurant wise. I hopped off a trolley that had come down Fillmore Street (after which Bill Graham named an auditorium no doubt) when I realised I was in the area. Earmarked a cosy black painted very reasonably priced bistro looking place called the Corner - it was just before 6pm and as I only ate some pastry and coffee and a banana ... read more

Monday 7 June This is for yesterday Monday as it is now Tues - did my photo resizing last nite so I can quickly scribble this then get out of the room before they do the fire drill in an hour! (notice under the door this morning). Yes was usual relative “accidental tourist” wipeout in terms of things seen and done - was thinking of getting to the Golden Gate as it was likely to be clearer then - today is still partly cloudy and the temps in San fran are shall we say somewhat “brisk” - no wonder they are selling off winter stock fleeces at $10 (much better for us Sthn Hemisperans than $20 Tshirts! - and you can use them here as well). Got out of here and up Van Ness a bit ... read more

Sunday 6 June This relates to Oakland update and to Berkeley from yesterday, as I am now in San Fran proper at the Opal Hotel - but we end there. Off we go. I take what I said about Oakland having nothing of interest - musta been cos I had at that stage only seen a little bit of Chinatown and the rather tawdry surrounds with no apparent hotels when I was rather hot and bothered - and the otherwise cheap Jack London Hotel - the whole area down near the waterfront is called Jack London Square, and as they say is the only concession to tourism there - which was only $50 - likely had no rooms available til 6 or 7pm as they were still cleaning em! - somewhat of a backlog then. Hence ... read more

Oakland CA Sunday morning afore noon - apologies to Johnny Cash. Bo blog or pix with this one - this was definitely a recovery morning form blogging all night and not enuf sleep on (at least) the 2 or 3 previous nights. This is lo-fat milk then, no cream. I have to check out from the Courtyard Marriott in downtown Oakland in 20 mins so this is brief. Hopped off the train from Sacramento here - and struggled to find a hotel at all (long story - later) but lobbed here, $109 + tax more than I wanted to pay but I had spent a hot hour slogging ard the streets here and did not want to go further. If I stayed here tonite Sunday (nothing much in Oakland but, but this area here is in ... read more

Friday 4 June from (South) Lake Tahoe - the quintessential northern California retreat for the weekend - almost the same as going to Vegas from LA - but for San Fran people - 2 hrs away they tell me to drive it to Sacramento to drop car off before noon. Last night was of course in Jamestown - and I must admit it looked rather dull in the bright morning light - prefer the night lights in so many ways and Azzo's looked really dull closed up this morning while last night it had atmosphere. I did not mention that Azzo the owner has become a collector of Bay Area and other rock memorabilia - the relatively small hand bills of the time advertising the Airplane, the Dead, Big Brother etc are now worth quite a ... read more

Thurs. 3 June I always seem to start with "I will try and keep the blog short..." but should this time as it is a.m. (10.15 f0r a change, not 1.30am) in Jamestown. This is a very cute old goldmining town I think - and the coupon for the Royal Carriage Inn - at only $38 + tax - had me think that saving money while I can is not too bad an idea. It is a very cute old hotel itself, but has good wireless so I am sitting in the breakfast room - only coffee and a packaged pastry thingy, but it will do. It has a real old style creaky timbered boardwalk outside which all adds to the atmosphere. I got over to Yosemite much earlier (yesterday) which was a mistake really - ... read more

Mariposa Thurs 3 June well it looked just like cheek abrasions yesterday - and the solid crash of camera on rock sounded like a lens smashing (but all continued to function to record the gasp-inducing Glacier Point thankfully. However this morning's mirror tells me it is a domestic violence case! and the somewhat blood-weeping grazed pinkie left some blood on the sheet (Warfarin good for nothing but anti-coagulation and bleedin')... read more
