Garcon - grilled sardines
(read text for yummy details) Tuesday 8 June
oh dear only one real restaurant night to go! (cos Thursday will be getting whatever I can decent at LAX that is not burger and fries!). So buckle in for tonight's plat du jour which is from the area called Mission (otherwise take your knife and fork and leave now). A heavily Hispanic area in terms of traders, such as fruit and veg and supplies, but obviously some trendies creeping in restaurant wise.
I hopped off a trolley that had come down Fillmore Street (after which Bill Graham named an auditorium no doubt) when I realised I was in the area. Earmarked a cosy black painted very reasonably priced bistro looking place called the Corner - it was just before 6pm and as I only ate some pastry and coffee and a banana at noonish (the Yankee diet continues) decided an early nose bag was in order. Walked along furthher then up a side street - a place called Lolo - vaguely Mexican but Zagat (food guide) rated (decided they all say that!) and noted that - but then came upon the French corner bistro called Garcon! The menu seemed more than OK and had half decided
what I would have - went inside and the 3 course menu (from virtually the whole menu) was only $35. Yippee, will do that then - and find room for dessert as well, which of course I would not normally : - ).
So off we trot. Glass of French viognier white - had that with grilled sardines on grilled eggplant with cous cous and a swirl of sauce vert - pureed green stuff - prob. one of them new-fangled "emulsions"?! As it was well day light you will have to suffer partly eaten pix of each of them, as this is a purely tooth entry! this was followed by a very nice coq au vin . The mushrooms in this actually tasted like mushrooms and it was nice to have some potato in there as well. The chicken was well fall apart and well cooked and the sauce a red wine based rich one. As there was already red wine in it had a glass of French bordeaux rather than white - a 50/50
cabernet/merlot mix that we do not really do in Australia in such proportions. Then the dessert - a round of cheesecake with rhubarb compote on top - and a few scraps of basil - which actually were quite refreshing to eat with this. So all jolly good and about $70 all with the 2 wines and a coffee.
And the closer? saw this couple sit outside - and assumed they were puffers de tabac - but no, they had their little friend with them - see the final snap. Told them that in Paris the dog would likely be under the tablecloth gnawing on the bones!
Bon appetit!
