Good Old Golden School Days

Not even through with May, and yet I have many more photos to show everyone! I'm afraid I don't have much exciting to say along with them, but I do like letting them speak for themselves. I've recently been taking my camera with me more often than normal. The result being the first large batch of photos on here. I took my camera to school for a couple of days to see what my so-called "photographer's eye" could see that my normal ones had not yet. The results were very rewarding! I hope you all enjoy them as much as I enjoyed taking them. The first day's photos from school were just from a normal school day where I had an especially long block of time between classes. The second day's photos are mostly from one ... read more

April and May: A Slew of Photos

For the most part, this entry is a mild form of catchup, after all this Kyoto business. Not that the last few episodes haven't been full of riveting pictures. But I think it's high time to be caught up! So, without further ado, a summing up of the main events of the past two months! The first group of pictures I have up on here came from a walk I had downriver in Higashikurume the very day after we all returned from Kyoto, April 1st. After so much walking through the streets of Kyoto, my feet didn't seem to want to stop moving once I got home. So I took a nice little spring walk down the river by myself. Japan, having different weather depending on where you are (like any other place), has different blooming ... read more

I had some time on my hands, so I decided to wrap this business up right quick. Here, therefore, is the last installment of the Kyoto trip! Enjoy! March 29, Saturday It was back to Gion this day with Kodai-ji Temple as our first stop after lunch. This place also had a giant Buddha, made of stone. The surrounding scenery was much better, though. I made sure to get lots of shots. Then we walked through the streets of Gion and got some interesting ice cream at a restaurant. Liz had some soft serve. Lauren and Aimee had some sakura ice cream, and I had a really wonderful bowl of crazy that included soybean ice cream (kinda like peanut butter, but not as strong and more awesome), vanilla ice cream, sweet red beans, balls of mochi, ... read more

My apologies for not getting this up sooner. At this rate, I'll be finished with Kyoto right before I leave here, and I've done a few more things since then, and have taken more cool pictures to boot! So, I plow onwards with the next installment for now. March 28, Friday Hideko made us a lovely breakfast again before we headed out to Uji, a few stops away from where she lived, to meet one of the ladies from the party, Achan. She escorted us to Byodo-in Temple, which can actually be seen on the back of the 10-yen coin. We didn’t get to see the inside, but we got to see the museum next to it, which was pretty cool. Achan kinda saw us as a mix between puppies and 5-year old kids… She bought ... read more

Time yet for another installment of the trip! March 26, Wednesday Today would be dubbed our “easy day” for the trip. We had been going at quite a pace for the past few days, so we were all eager for a bit of an exhale. After checking out of the hotel, we headed back to Hideko’s house, and she even made us lunch! Already, it felt kinda nice to be back at her house. After lunch, we played in a little park near Hideko’s, then headed to Kyoto station. Underneath the station is an underground mall called Porta. Sorta like a very small Sunshine City. Lots of fun. We took some time to explore, and I bought a new watch (I broke my old one at the hotel). From the bottom of the station, we went ... read more

Time for the second installment of the trip, folks! Lucky I've had some spare time on my hands. I've gotta get this down sometime, eh? March 25, Tuesday Originally when we came here, Aimee had been told by one of Hideko’s daughters (mother of the boy she tutors) that we would have to stay 2 different nights in hotels, because Hideko had to work late those nights. At the welcoming party she threw us, she told us that we were more than welcome to stay the entire time. Aimee had been able to reserve a hotel for one of the 2 nights, but the other we were planning on pulling an all-nighter for, though Lauren had reserved a one-room in case things got too bad. With Hideko’s new information, we were relieved not to pull an ... read more

Hello again to everyone! It’s time once more for an update! As many of you know, Aimee, Lauren, Liz and I all went on a trip during the last week of March to Kyoto. Minus a few slips, I had my camera with me a lot of the time, so I have LOTS to show. I’ll mostly leave the pictures to explain things, but I’ll also give a recap as well, to give the pictures a little more clarity. HOWEVER... Due to the fact that I took exactly 999 pictures on this trip, I've recently decided to split the trip up into several separate posts, so as to make the picture uploading easier for me and probably anyone else reading this. And I won't be posting every single picture. Probably just the best of the bunch. ... read more

March 10th 2008

Well, not too much has changed since my last post. But I do have a bunch of pictures to put up that I think people would get a kick out of. Things of recent note include a homemade hanging mobile over my bed, a long walk down the river in Higashikurume with Liz during the warm weekend, going to Harajuku with Liz and Aimee (and it being basically their first real look there), and taking a second trip to the Ghibli Museum, this time with Lauren, Aimee, and Liz. The walk with Liz down the river was pretty fantastic. Near the dorm, and if you go down the river traveling west for a ways (upriver), it's fenced on both sides with an occasional bridge to cross over to the other side if you wish. That being ... read more

This post is mostly about posting pictures for everyone of happenings here since Christmas, Daniel's visit here and such. But I'll do some script update as well for good measure. Well, as I mentioned before (at least I think), I'm on break now and will be so until mid April, I believe. So far, things have been pretty peaceful. Most people, including myself, took that first week off to sleep and share a few toasts to the end of the first semester. I went to a party at Doma Doma for one of the Swedes, Simon, soon after break started. It was great to kick back with friends and dip into bowls of food together around one big table. I left relatively early and saw a tanuki on my way back home with a few other ... read more

Miyazaki's Genius

February 19th 2008

As promised, before any other entries, I would very much like to present to all of you a glimpse of the Ghibli Museum. These were all taken on January 4th, as a reference, the day before Daniel went back home. From the moment Aimee, Daniel, and I stepped off the train at Mitaka (the town where the museum was located), it was no wonder to me that Miyazaki grew up there. The very walk to the museum showed glimpses of where his imagination came from. We got there about 45 minutes early, so we had lunch and took a walk around the park surrounding the museum. We were also on the last leg of the tour, so we were only there for 2 hours. However, I fully intend to go back a few times before my ... read more
