As this is the second time I have written this blog after not saving it, I wouldn’t expect too much. Frustration aside, I will begin again…we arrived in Belgrade after a beautiful train trip where we basically had the entire cart to ourselves so we were able to spread ourselves out quite comfortably. When we arrived at the train station we knew which tram we needed to catch and where to get off, but we could not at all find ticket stations, so we just hopped on and had a free trip, the driver seemed to be happy for us to not pay. We were happy with the location of the hostel being in the centre and close to everything we wanted to see and do. We arrived to a hostel owner who was keen to ... read more

The last time we were in Budapest was a chilly December 2010, it was the first time we had travelled overseas and it was love at first site! After visiting numerous European cities we both still hold a special place for Budapest so we were very excited to return and it did not disappoint. It is definitely a very different city in summer, beautiful green trees lining the roads instead of knee deep snow. Our stop this time was brief, but we knew exactly what we wanted to see and do and it was achievable. Last time we had neglected to go to the famous thermal baths, so this was on our list along with getting up close to the parliament house which is a magnificent building. Along with this we were keen to visit Trophia, ... read more

Our first destination in Poland was Warsaw, from what we had been told our expectations were not high but we were still interested to come and check it out. The reason Warsaw is often the forgotten destination in Poland is that it was destroyed almost completely in WW2 so many of the old buildings are no longer there. After finding our hostel from the train station (this time going the correct way first time!!) we found some food. We then did the free walking tour which gave us a good look at the city. We were pleasantly surprised with the Old City which has been rebuilt quite grandly and is nice to look at. Our guide was quite the talker, informing us on the interesting historical events of the city along with some long winded unimportant ... read more

After a comfortable four hour bus trip from Riga we arrived into Vilnius at around midday. I had drawn a rough map of where our hostel was located in relation to the bus stop. We walked for around 400 meters downhill until we realised it was uphill in the other direction, you would think we would be good at this by now! We did make it to our hostel; a small apartment located in the old town however and met up with the owner and some other people staying at the hostel. The owner was extremely welcoming and informed us on all the main sites to see and spots to hang out at in the city over a local wine. After settling in we set off on foot to explore the city, after getting such good ... read more

Riga was a place denied to us in December 2010 when due to the snow fall in London Heathrow Airport went to shut down and we spent two nights sleeping in the airport and another week in Slough waiting for a flight. We vowed to see it next time we were in the area! Arriving in a city with high expectations is always a little dangerous as you are nearly always disappointed, like we were in Riga. In fact I think it is better to arrive without expectation and be surprised. We spent the first day walking around the old town area which to be honest was a little underwhelming (the overcast weather didn't help). We did have high expectations, but it came across extremely touristy (somewhat expected), restored to the point of looking shiny and ... read more

Having arrived in Berlin after a whirl wind of flights from Victoria Falls to Botswana then to Namibia, Frankfurt and finally a connecting flight to Berlin we were exhausted but excited to be back in Europe. We got off the plane in a daze and waited for our bags to come through, always a nerving experience, they were there but mine had been obviously opened. All of the clips were open and the contents completely mixed around and worse our SLR camera missing! I felt completely sick, we checked all the lost and missing desks before making our way to the Air Namibia desk where we were told that the camera would have been taken in Victoria Falls and that their policy did not cover items going missing from bags and therefore neither would our insurance, ... read more

After our last truck day we arrived in our final destination in Africa, the mighty Victoria Falls. We enjoyed our last three nights in our tent camping at Shoe Strings Backpackers before moving to Rest Camp where we spent another four nights. Our days were packed with all of the adrenaline activities on offer. I kicked off our first day by doing a flying fox across the gorge. I was extremely nervous about running and throwing myself off the cliff face, however once I was suspended over the gorge the feeling was amazing and the view extremely beautiful. Aaron was extremely supportive standing at the viewing deck giving me the thumbs up. I loved it so much that I did it again, this time really running up and throwing myself off the edge. After the mornings ... read more

Driving through the infamous Tete Corridor (well known in the days of Mozambique's long running civil war as the Gun Run) we entered Zimbabwe, our first stop the capital, Harare. Here we camped along Lake Chivero for two freezing cold nights. During the night zebra and horses would stroll around our tents and in the afternoon giraffe and sometimes rhino could be spotted across the lake. There were two zebras in particular that we often saw running around with a sheep that they had befriended. The camp grounds were also home to Zimbabwes biggest bird park, we were able to hold some of the birds and even nurse a young hawk. After the first freezing cold night and equally as freezing shower a group of us decided to venture into Harare city to purchase some warmer ... read more

After an interesting boarder crossing where we were almost ripped off by money changers we entered the very friendly country of Malawi. Malawi is a noticeably poorer country than both Kenya and Tanzania however the people are extremely warm and welcoming. After driving across the boarder and through numerous straw built villages we made out first stop, Chitimba on Lake Malawi where we stayed for three nights. We spent a lot of time in the local villages where we enjoyed visiting the students and teachers at the primary school and had a tour around the community health centre. The village had just had a water pumping system put in and were proud to show it off. I spent one afternoon learning to wood carve, I carved a giraffe with a little help from my 13 year ... read more

After a night at Mikardi beach we made our way on tut tuts to the ferry terminal where we waited to board the ferry to Zanzibar. After taking a motion sickness tablet we buckled down for the two and a half hour journey, we were very lucky as the waves were quite calm. (A week later we found out that the ferry we caught had sunk with 150 people dead) After passing through immigration and finding our hotel in the maze like streets of Stone Town we found a cafe on the waterfront and treated ourselves to some delicious lunch. After lunch some of our group made their way to the slave market or did a spice tour. We decided to wonder around ourselves, we found an amazing local market where I brought some dresses made ... read more
