Monday 27th July At last I'm finally teaching full-time in the school I wanted to be in! The school re-opened yesterday (Sunday) after a long break and the placement guy here thought there would not be much point in my going in on the first day. I sat in on and observed 6 lessons today - in the first few I just watched then I started to get involved a bit. I am working mainly with the English teacher (i.e. the teacher of English - the staff are all Nepail). The school is called Shree Krishna Lower Secondary School - Shree just means "first" and Krishna is the 7th incarnation of the Hindu God Shiva. Lower Secondary means it teaches up to grade 8 (A higher secondary school would teach up to grade 10, the equivalent ... read more

Friday 24th July Today was my first "real" day of teaching in a school even though I am only doing one lesson. I walked round to Phil's and he called a taxi. He asked whether there was anything else I needed before we went to the school and I mentioned that I had broken my glasses frame this morning while wiping the lenses so we went via an opticians where he negotitade a price of 1100 rupees to put my lenses in a new frame which I thought was pretty good (that's less than 10 quid). Some notes on Nepali currency: the current exchange rate is around 122 rupees to one pound sterling. Most money is banknotes going from 5 rupees up to 1000 rupees so the 5 rupee banknote is worth about 5p. I have ... read more

Thursday 23rd July This was my last day before I started teaching properly so I went out of Pokhara to visit two other lakes. Pokhara has its own lake, Phewa Tal, after which the Lakeside district where I am staying is named, but about half an hour's drive away there are two more lakes close together which are much less frequented by tourists, Begnas Tal and Rupa Tal. Begnas Bazar is the town by Begnas Tal - to get there I had to take two buses and then I intended to walk to Rupa Tal which the guide book said was about 3km. I spent half an hour or so relaxing by Begnas Tal and trying to keep out of the sun - it was a very hot day with no sign of rain. From the ... read more

Because there is virtually no rail network in Nepal, buses are extremely popular and busy. It takes 3 men to run a bus - a driver, a fare collector and an "usher" who jumps off at every stop and tries to round up custom, shouting out the destination and touting any people who look as though they might be wanting a bus. When everybody is on, he bangs on the side or whistles to tell the driver to move off. Eventually, when he can be bothered, the fare collector goes around asking for money, holding a big wad of bank notes in his hand. There are no tickets. Local buses are pretty basic - typically about 16-18 seats but they try and squeeze on everybody who wants to travel. The first one I caught was already ... read more

Tuesday 21st July Now I know I said I would post something on Tuesday but by the early evening the thunderclouds were looking very threatening and before a long a tremendous downpour began which went on most of the evening and night so I didn't fancy going out again. I got back to the Castle just in time to bring in my shirts which I had washed in the morning and had been hanging out all day. It's supposed tio be the monsoon season but it has apparently been very patchy this year (in fact for the last few years). Normally it would rain heavily every day. There was a bit of a shower when I was in Kathmandu on Sunday evening but on Monday there was no rain at all so it has been much ... read more

It's now 6.20 pm and I'm in another internet cafe, this time in Pokhara. I'm feeling a lot better than yesterday evening - more relaxed and more time now I'm at my final destination so I hope I will write something a bit longer and more interesting than yesterday's. Yesterday was a long day (well 2 days really since it started midday Saturday) and I was a bit jaded by the end of it and also conscious that I would have to be up very early the next day. This evening I'm feling much more relaxed. Everything about the travel went according to plan. I got a bus into Birmingham, then a National Express coach to Heathrow, then flew Air India to new Delhi, then finally Indian Airways (slightly different airline apparently to Air India) to ... read more

I'm sitting in an internet cafe in Kathmandu at 7.45pm which is about 3.00pm British time. Finally got here about 4 o'clock. The flights were all pretty much on time but it was still non-stop travel for about 24 hours since leaving home. Kathmandu is a sensory overload - I've just spent the last 2 - 3 hours wondering around the city centre and it's teeming with colours, smells and people. I thought it would be a good idea to get that bit done straight away then I can have a reasonably early night as I didn't sleep very much on the plane and I've got to be up pretty early to catch a bus at 8:00am to Pokhara. Then it's 7 to 8 hours on the bus. Will try and write a longer note once ... read more
