Friday 12th April Today was planned to be probably the longest walking day so we set off a bit earlier than usual, leaving the Rivendell lodge at Deboche at 07:15. Rivendell has a great view of Everest and this morning it was clear without any cloud cover. Leaving the lodge we first had a short sharp uphill walk to Tengboche monastery. Tengboche is one of the most important Buddhist monasteries in Nepal and is the one where many mountaineers go to pay their respects before attempting to cloimb one of the high summits. It is also blessed with an excellent view of Everest. We are now back on the main direct route for trekkers going from Lukla to Everest. Leaving Tengboche there is then a quite long steep downhill section towards Phungi Tanga where we cross ... read more

Thursday 11th April Up until now we had been walking in bright sunshine every day with very dry conditions underfoot producing a very fine dust. We had occasionally passed drifts of snow which had obviously been there for some time but we had not had to walk on snow at all. On Wednesday evening, however, it snowed whilst we were staying at the lodge in Lobuche. On the Thursday we awoke to find that about half an inch of snow covered the ground all around. Although this was not enough to cause any problems with trekking, the light covering of snow made a remarkable difference to the scene. A normal morning routine saw us setting out for the day's walking at 07:30. As we were now retracing our steps of a couple of days ago, the ... read more

Wednesday 10th April This trek had two main objectives, firstly to reach Everest Base Camp itself, and secondly to reach the summit of Kala Pattar in order to see the 'classic' view of Everest. We achived the first objective yesterday and the intention today was to achieve the second and then begin the return journey to Lukla. It is generally considered that the best view of Everest from Kala Pattar is around sunrise. In theory Everest can be viewed from there at anytime but in the afternoon it is more likely to be clouded over and therefore the best chance of a good view is early morning. For this reason we were woken at 4am and dressed and met down in the dining room for a cup of tea at 04:30. At 04:45 we left the ... read more

Monday 8th April A normal morning routine saw us leaving Dingboche (pronounced Ding-bo-shay) at 07:40. The walking started with a short westward uphill section to climb out of the Imja Khola (Dingboche) valley and then contoured along the side of the Chola Khola valley as far as Thokla. At 09:40 we stopped at the lodge/tea house at Thokla for the normal mid-morning lemon tea and half-hour rest. Thokla is at the bottom of the terminal morraine of the Khumbu glacier. That meant we then had a long steep uphill section to get up the the level of the Khumbu valley. I was hoping that at this point we would see and walk alongside the Khumbu glacier but unfortunately the glacier was on the other side of a quite high morraine wall from the footpath up the ... read more

It's been a few days since my last update but I've been pretty tired at the end of the day and gone straight to bed after the evening meal on two occasions and hard to find internet cafes on the others! However we are now in the village of Dingboche for the second of our acclimatisation days so we have an afternoon free and the village has 3 internet cafes. Unfortunately most don't seem to have working USB ports so I am unable to upload any photographs as yet. As we now have something like a daily routine for the walking days, it might be worthwhile describing the daily routine. We are woken (if we are not already awake!) at 06:30 with a cup of black tea. We then have 30 minutes to pack the bags ... read more

A wake up call at 0630 with a cup of tea again and we had to have our bags packed ready for the porters by 7 oclock. We then went in for breakfast and were back on the trail by 0740. Todays walk was fairly level and after a good 3 hour trek we reached the village of Samde where we stopped for a 45 minute break and cups of lemon tea. The tea house we stopped at was run by a Sherpa who climbs Everest. He came out to chat to us and we discovered that he has already summited Everest 12 times and was currently preparing for his 13th climb. After leaving Samde, another hours walking brought us to the destination for today, the village of Thame. We are staying at the Valley View ... read more

Today I saw my first view of Everest - fantastic! We are stopping in Namche Bazaar for a second night tonight as today was an acclimatisation day after the big rise in altitude. I have realised that I forget to mention any heights in my previous entry, so here goes: We flew from Kathmandu to Lukla which was at 2880 metres above sea level. On the first day we actually lost height as our first night's stay was at Phakding which is at 2640m. Yesterday we then climbed to Namche Bazaar which is at 3450m. This morning we were woken 5:15 by Tanka, our sirdar, with a cup of tea. This was an encouragement to get up and dressed ready for a short walk at 05:30. We were getting up this early in order to climb ... read more

We arrived in Namche Bazaar about 3:30 this afternoon after walking from Phakding. Two days trekking now completed and today was supposed to be the hardest. On Sunday (yesterday) we were all up before 6pm in order to pack, have breakfast and get to the domestic airport in time for a 7:45am flight to Lukla. In fact it was about 8:15 when we actually took off. The domestic airport in Kathmandu was fairly chaotic but we managed to get checked in without much trouble. The plane was an 18-seater propeller-driven type and the flight to Lukla took just 30 minutes. The flight itself was fine with good views of villages, rice terraces etc. below, and views of snow-covered peaks out to the left as we were flying east. The landing at Lukla was everything it had ... read more

We arrived in Kathmandu late last night and today has been quite full of activities so this is the first chance I've had to get on a computer. The group was 11 in size leaving the UK with 2 more joining us in Kathmandu. We flew from Heathrow to Kathmandu via Abu Dhabi with Etihad airways. Both flights were on time but we had a 7 hour stopover in Abu Dhabi so 5 of us decided to try and go into Abu Dhabi city centre to pass some time and to have a general look around. In fact it turned out to be quite easy to leave the airport plus you get the extra entry and exit stamps in your passport for the United Arab Emirates. There is a shuttle bus just outside terminal 3 which ... read more

I caught an evening sleeper train from Varanasi which arrived at Bhopal at 8am the next morning. I had decided to stop for a while in Bhopal mainly to break the journey from Varanasi to Mumbai so I had booked two separate sleeper trains to do the journey. Bhopal is the site of the Taj-ul-Masjid mosque, designed at it's inception to be the largest mosque in the world. It was started by one of Bhopal's three female rulers in 1877 but she died before it was finished. Before heading towards the Taj-ul-Masjid I had put my large rucksack into the left luggage storage department at Bhopal railway station. Left luggage at railway stations is a very useful and cheap facility - usually only 10 rupees for up to 24 hours - when back-packing and you want ... read more
