This weekend was one for the memory books! But first, Saturday. Saturday we went to Haeundae beach for the Sand Festival where they had all kinds of activities involving sand, the highlight of which was sand sculptures. It's amazing what people can carve in the sand! They had 3 professionals from Korea and USA and they carved a real sand castle, the Eiffel Tower, Christ the Redeemer, Statue of Liberty and many other things that were simply amazing! We saw one artist hard at work on his piece when we arrived and when we left later on he was still working and STILL not finished! Now that's dedication, considering we were told that the sculptures get taken down every day and re-done the next day! Let me just tell you about the beach phenomenon in Korea ... read more

Last weekend was an experience we will never forget and likely never repeat! We went to Beomeo-sa Buddhist temple for a 2 day, 1 night Temple stay where you live like a Buddhist monk! This is one of those "must-do" things when living in Korea and so we decided to check it out! We chose Beomeosa because it's nearby in Busan and they conveniently have English translation so we wouldn't be lost the entire time! We went with our friends Drew, Mara, James and Sarah and everyone agreed that it was an unforgettable experience but not one that we'd willingly do again! The program began at 1:00 Saturday when we were given our clothes for the next 24 hours - gray, baggy, tappered pants (that were, of course too short for Mike!), a loose matching vest ... read more

Hi everyone!! Today has been one of those days here when I could do without people talking about me in Korean without telling me what they are saying or the constant stares from passerbys. In Korea you quickly learn that the word for 'foreigner' is WAYGUK and it can often be heard no matter where you are. From kids, form adults, anyone! Sometimes it gets to me and other times it doesn't but I seriously think you would never hear someone in Canada say "Look, Mom, a foreign person!" - unless of course the kids was like 3 and didn't know better. I came across this great website today (www.roketship.com) that has comics about Korean stereotypes and it's so hilarious! It gave both of us a good chuckle and we thought we'd share some of our ... read more

The Good: Weekend trip to Seoul, including the DMZ tour and the Lotus Lantern Festival. The Bad: Long weekend trip to Tong Yeong and neighbouring islands amid a weekend of bad luck and pouring rain. The Ugly: The weather - 3 days of non-stop pouring rain. Let's start with the good! 2 weekends ago we went to Seoul with Mara, Drew, James and Sarah for what we both agree was the best weekend of our entire stay in Korea thus far! Friday when we arrived in Seoul we met our Korean friend So Young, who just moved to Seoul for a job. She used to work at Mike's school and we were happy to see her again! We went to a Japanese restaurant and had delicious ramen noodles there (which made us excited for our upcoming ... read more

Well it seems as thought Korea has managed to skip spring entirely this year. The weather went from cloudy, rainy, cold and winter-coat wearing one week to short sleeves, endless sunshine and soaring temperatures! And no one is complaining here!! Once we got off the high from our family's visit, life quickly went back to normal here. The weekend of April 24-5 was a big weekend of festivals in Yangsan. Firstly was the Gyeongnam province Sports Festival which features mostly university-aged athletes in over 20 different sports competing for a chance to represent the province at nationals. We went to check out the taekwondo, on the suggestion of our master, in hopes of learning some good sparring techniques. These athletes were amaaaaazing! There is no way we can do close to the moves they can do, ... read more

Our thoughts on Korea! On April 19th we arrived back from Korea, uneventfully, unlike our trip over to Korea. We had a wonderful time and the highlight of the trip was seeing Michael and Danielle of course as it had been about 7 months ago that they left on their Korean adventure. A little intimidated at first, but excited to have the opportunity for such a cultural experience. April 8th - finally left Detroit, after sitting on the plane for 2 hours as they were fixing the cargo door. Consequently, we missed our connecting flight to Busan from Tokyo. The airline arranged a flight to Seoul, a stay at a hotel, and our flight the next morning to Busan. So instead of Friday evening, we arrived early Saturday eagerly expecting to be greeted by Mike & ... read more

No trip to Korea is complete without a tour of Seoul, the bustling capital of Korea. With a population of over 11 million (17 million during the work day) this place is as frustrating as it is amazing! The experience began with the frustrating as Mike and family attempted to drive to Seoul at 9pm on Friday evening. Taking the train from Busan to Seoul, I was faster than they were going a third of the distance by car! Finally they arrived and we found a hotel that looked nice enough...at first glance! As we were checking in and told them we'd be staying 2 nights, the receptionist said "Oh, people don't usually sleep overnight in our motel"...great...So we go into our rooms, which were huuuuuge, with 2 big screen tvs, a couch, nice bathroom...and a ... read more

Monday was bound to arrive sooner or later and that meant Mike and Danielle go back to school and the family must fend for themselves for a few days! As we headed off to school (still with many worries of them getting lost), we left them with an itinerary that involved a lot of the major sight seeing stops in Busan. Those included Shinsegae (largest dept store in the world) and the Busan National University (PNU) area where there is lots of shopping and plenty of bars and restaurants. Of course, our major concern was how they would manage to find food. Although its easy enough to spot a restaurant, its not too easy to choose when you don't know what is on the unfamiliar menu. And since they did not love the Korean food the ... read more

That Friday seemed like the longest day ever. We couldn't wait for school to finish as we had a busy night ahead of us, concluding with the welcoming of our highly-anticipated visitors from Mike's family! Mike had spent the day checking the flight status of the family's flight from Detroit to Japan to ensure that things were on schedule for their 9:30pm arrival in Busan. After confirming time and time again that the flight was ON TIME, we hopped on the subway to pre-check into the hotel in Haeundae we had reserved for them for their stay. After getting checked in (and being upgraded to an ocean-view room complimentary for Larry and Christine!) we took the subway to the airport and anxiously awaited their flight's landing. Checking the board, we see that their flight has landed ... read more

Hello everyone!! We are sad to report that our wonderful visit with the Smith/Mayberry's has come to an end and they are safely back in our homeland (well, we are happy about that part!). Our recap of their trip will appear shortly, along with their thoughts and impressions of their wild whirlwind trip! And of course, lots of beautiful pictures! In the meantime, I wanted to tell the story of what happened yesterday at school. I (Danielle) teach an after-school class 2 days a week for high level English students. In this class I have a great group of girls that love speaking English and are a pleasure to teach. They love to ask me questions about everything, and Mike is often a topic of our discussions. They wanted to meet him so badly because one ... read more
