I thought I would write a blog with some more info about my school now that I have been there for a few weeks. Those of you who are teachers will get a kick out of some of the things they do here (and I don’t necessarily mean that in a good way!). There are just over 1000 students in my school, and I teach every single one of them! I teach the first years every week and the second and third years only every other week - so most students I only see twice a month! Students here wear uniforms and teachers dress ranging from super dressed-up to jeans and a tee. My school is only 3 years old and is one of the largest MIddle Schools in Yangsan. Here is some more info! Firstly, ... read more

What better to do on a scorching September day than to hike a mountain and watch the sunset on the horizon you say??? Well just that, we did!!!! We decided that 38 degrees and the hottest day since we've come to Korea was motivation enough to get us up that mountain again. So we set out at about 4:00 in hopes of reaching the south west peak to catch a glimpse of the beautiful sunset as it crept down through the mountains and along the westward river. Little did we know that 500 meters up and 2.5 kilometers south along the ridge would take most of our energy, Water, and almost 2 and a half hours. None the less we made it most of the way and found a quaint rock, jutting out from the cliff ... read more

Saturday we ventured on the city buses for the first time to make the trek to the outer limits of the city to visit the Tongdosa Temple. We went there with our new friends, Lauren and Austin from Houston, Texas and Mara and Drew from Canada (Ontario and B.C.). This temple is the largest in South Korea and one of the 3 Jewel Temples in Korea, meaning that it is one of the most important Buddhist temples. It is also famous because it has no statues of Buddha in the main temple, because real shrines of Buddha are preserved there. The temple is over 1300 years old, although it is very tourist-centered now, so most of the history of it has been replaced or is in parts of the grounds that tourists aren’t allowed to visit. ... read more

That’s right, folks! There has been a flurry of autograph signings, fans following the celebrities around and hanging out of windows to catch a glimpse of them leaving a place throughout this city in the last week! Note writing, secret whispers and all the above. And who are these celebrities? Well, they are the foreign English teachers Danielle and Mike, of course!! Leaving school today I realized how much this is true, when there literally were about 15 students hanging out the fourth floor windows waving good-bye (almost everyday) to me and yelling my name! Students follow me around all day, always wanting to say hi, or any other random word they know in English. I get A LOT of students telling me they love me and how beautiful I am. To top it off, Mike ... read more

Active Yangsan is something like the motto for this city, as well as an initiative to get people outside, being active, and it is quite incredible. They have put in all these walking paths made of track rubber (much nicer to walk on than a regular sidewalk) around the city and there are speakers on every lamp post playing music that is quite enjoyable!!! The pathways are marked with 200m markings so you can determine how far your walk or run was… the rubber path is for the pedestrian and there is a concrete path closer to the water for both pedestrians and bicycles… these paths wind for kilometers on end, our landlord was unable to tell us how far they would go outside of the city limits. It is believed that one day it will ... read more

Well, I survived, but barely! It was an interesting day to say the least. Going into today, I knew pretty much nothing. I didn’t know what grades I was teaching, what my schedule was like, where my classes were, what I should expect or anything! The only thing I was told was that the students were a lower level English than average…however, I don’t know what the level of the average English ESL speaker should be, so that didn’t help me much. Turns out I WAY overestimated what the students would be able to do. They had a hard time answering the question “What day is it today?” I had to throw out my entire lesson plan and start from scratch on the spot once I realized that talking about their hobbies and family would be ... read more

HEY HEY HEY... So we know its been a little while since the last posting and we apologize for that and hopefully you've hung with us!! We have been a bit busy tying up some loose ends and exploring around our area and the neighboring city, Busan. But here we go... So Danielle managed to get her bags back in one piece, they arrived 2 days ago at my school unharmed (but have probably seen more of the world than we have). So now the mission is to see if there is any compensation for our missed flights and inconvenience of lost luggage, we figure there is no harm in trying. We finally headed to Busan with our Korean co-teachers and got our quarantine health checks done (talk about wild)... in about 15min time we were ... read more

Hello all, We have finally, after a long couple days of traveling, arrived to our new home in Yangsan, South Korea and so far we love it!! Our flights were good for the most part, except that one our suitcases got lost, and we missed a connecting flight while dealing with that...no word yet on where the suitcase is, but we are hoping to find out soon!! Once we finally arrived in Busan, we met our co-teachers, Mike's is Jung Hoon, and I have 2, Sun Hee, and I can't remember the other one's name. We each went to our schools, got shown around, then we brought to our apartment. I had lunch at my school's cafeteria, and the other teachers laughed when I tried to use the chopsticks and told me to just use my ... read more
