Let's just say that paradise exists in both places. Here are some pics for your enjoyment!... read more
So it's been too long. If you want to know how the past week was, check out the OLP blog on the site. Let me sum up that week by simply saying that I am in love with the Copperbelt. It is just nice to step away from the city craziness as well as the smells. Just know that I tried African bologna and caterpillars - neither of which will be revisited. Monday we came back to Lusaka, leaving the Copperbelt forever (or until Sandy asks again ;-)). Of course I teared up a little saying goodbye to the guys, especially Bros. Joseph and Rogers, but having a big group around keeps the tears from really flowing. The drive down wasn't too bad, thanks to word games and portable speakers! Yesterday we went to Bauleni School ... read more
Just have about a minute to update. Things have been going really well with the group. We are now stationed in the Copperbelt for the next few days with plenty of work ahead. I'll try and update when I can. Love and miss you all!!... read more
I've now moved back to St. Bonaventure College, but with a few more visitors in tow. The group from Colorado that I have been waiting for has finally made it (look for them under the name "OLP" on here)! They got in two nights ago with about 40 boxes worth of donated items. No joke, the only personal items they brought came in their carry-on bags. I mean, wow, dedication. Yesterday they got their first views of Africa in the daylight. They were taken around the college by Fr. John, who helped us out the night they came in through this morning. After the tour and lunch, they were able to give their first set of donated items to a local clinic that is opening in August through the work of the Sisters of St. Francis. ... read more
Look at this, another entry. I think I might have matched already what I wrote last year. Maybe not, but it feels close. Again, no pictures, but there will be some soon. The past day or so Sandy and I went to Garneton to visit with Br. Tony and company. It's changed a little since last year, including the people. There are also to harvestable banana plants anymore. Last year, I think I discussed how many had died off from a disease of some kind. Well, this year, there is no more. The plants are still around here and there, but not much and I don't think any are used. So yesterday I was able to talk with Remie, the head teacher at St. Francis school that is almost literally right behind St. Francis Friary. He ... read more
Today's my last day in Ndola for about a week or so, which means the last day with pretty decent internet. This afternoon Sandy and I are headed to Garneton for a little visit. The past few days have been kind of a whirlwind. Our second day here (possibly the last day I wrote) I went with the guys, as well as Ishmael (sp?) who's from Austria and Lydia, from Zambia to the Ndola market. The place was huge and had everything from small trinkets, to vegetables, to tons and tons of fish. I've heard some remarks about the bad smell the fish have, but honestly, it was welcome to some of the other scents I was picking up - including mold from stagnant water, raw sewage, and urine. Par for the course, I guess. Oh, ... read more
Since yesterday, I have gone with Sandy to meet up with some people that may be helping us out over the next few weeks with the group I'm helping facilitate. It was nice to finally meet the legendary Sr. Josephine, who I have heard about since I was there last year. I have to say, I now know why she is so loved. She's a great woman who has done many wonderful things to help out the people of Zambia as well as her fellow sisters. I hope to see her again while I'm here. After dinner Sandy and I had a meeting with Fr. Bonaventure to get some loose ends tied. You definitely know you're not in Kansas anymore when you have to worry about so many details that you would take advantage of at ... read more
Here's the first entry of my time here. I got to Lusaka at about 830 and didn't make it out of the airport until about 10. I had two of my three bags and had to wait to get through the line of the lost luggage only to find that it was in another room, in like a giant crate-thing. But then from there, I was good. I'm staying now at St. Bonaventure College, which seems incredibly nice, I haven't had a real chance to look around. Last night, after arriving I met Sandy's nephew, Donnie, who's visiting and his friend Trevor who has been living in South Africa for the past couple of months. I actually went with both of them and Br. Donald to mass at Regina Pacis (sp?), I really can't remember the ... read more
I wanted to go ahead and put a blog in about me going back to Zambia. I will be leaving June 5 and should be returning July 8. Here's the letter I've been sending for donations, which has a little more info. Let me start off by introducing myself. My name is Meghan Weidner and I am a graduate of Bellarmine University. . I have been actively involved in service activities that have allowed me to travel to places such as Zambia, Africa; Denver, Colorado and the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota to do such work as help rebuild homes and care for children. I also have been involved here in our local community working with youth and service groups doing the same things in both worker and leadership roles. Just recently I was given ... read more
