Being the travel junkies we are – we love exploring new places and cultures and China has been a great place to do this. Every free minute we have – we have been out wandering the city or making small trips to nearby cities. This has made our lives a bit crazy at times, but it’s a small price to pay for the experiences we’ve been having. I intro with this because this blog begins a wild 3 week travel /work trip. First stop.. Huangshan. Huangshan (Yellow Mountain in English) is a mountain range in Anhui province that is very well known for its scenery and sharp jutted granite peaks. We had been talking about making the trip for quite some time, however, the trip required a full 3 days and we just hadn’t found the ... read more

In early December we had several co-workers in town from the Orlando office so we took them to see an acrobatic show in Shanghai called ERA. We had never seen the show before, but had read about it online and heard it was similar to Cirque du Soleil which we had been to several times in Orlando and really enjoyed. The show was absolutely unbelievable and I would recommend it to anyone in town. They didn’t allow pictures so sadly I can’t share any of it here, but if I had to briefly describe it - I would say Cirque on Steroids. They did many of the amazing things you would see at Cirque, but always took it to the next level with much more danger… all safety cautions removed. This includes 6 motorcycles speeding at ... read more

Back in November (yes, we are a bit behind on our blog) we had to travel to the Beijing office for a few days for work. We figured we’d make a trip out of it and planned to leave a few days early to take some time and see the city. When we mentioned we were going, our friends Johnny and Niki said they had never been to Beijing and wanted to make the trip with us along with Niki’s sister-in-law, Leah. We were very excited to have some friends (and translators!) come along with us. We did so much in the 8 days that I certainly won’t try to summarize it all here. A “few” highlights…. 1. Checking into the hotel only to smell a strong sewage odor in our room. (Plumbing in buildings in ... read more

If you can cook it, they will eat it!

Food is one thing in China that is very foreign to other places we’ve visited. Sometimes I’m blown away by the things that are cooked and presented as ‘food’. When it comes to food in the US – I consider myself open to try anything. That is definitely not the case here. There is a saying in China… if you can cook it, they will eat it. Many of the food conveniences of the US are either not available, not safe to eat, or simply ridiculously expensive to buy here. (We found a western/expat grocery store with cereal… too bad they were selling it for $14 a box!) This has led us to be a little creative in our cuisine choices. We’ve certainly had some interesting experiences with food. Here are two that happened recently that ... read more

Happy New Year to everyone! The Christmas and New Year holidays are not as commonly celebrated here in China, but we have been surprised at the amount of decorations around the city and Christmas music heard in restaurants and shopping malls everywhere. I think it is simply another way of embracing the culture of a Western society without actually acknowledging (or being ignorant of) the religious aspects of the holiday. We were also welcomed into the winter season with a rare dusting of snow in Shanghai… in ways, it made me feel more at home than I was in Florida at times! I am not usually one to engage in the New Year’s resolution binge but instead try to achieve realistic goals throughout the entire year. However, this year I actually plan to set a New ... read more

One beautiful fall Saturday in early November, we decided to check out Zhujiajiao (which means Zhu family settlement). It’s an ancient water village (kind of like a Chinese Venice but slightly less remarkable) that was built 1700 years ago. According to our travel guide, we had to find the pink bus near People’s Square with the characters 沪朱高速快线 on it. We arrived early and went searching for the pink bus. After carefully scrutinizing the characters on the front of the bus, we realized it was the one (the only one) with a line down the street. When in China, if you’re going somewhere touristy, just look for the long line. We waited for about an hour and a half and watched 3 buses come and go. We finally boarded a bus and paid our measly 12 ... read more

I’m getting a little behind in documenting our experiences in Shanghai, so this is going to be somewhat of a summary blog. Badger fans are going to be especially disappointed that I haven’t even written about how we got to watch the severe beating of the Buckeyes live from Shanghai! I blame it on writer’s block… no that’s a terrible excuse, I have tons to write about! I’ve just never been much of a writer, but it’s really important to me to document our experiences here, so someday we can sit our kids down on the couch and say as Ted would in How I Met Your Mother, “So kids, this is how the story goes…” (we’ve recently fallen in love with this show!) But it’s also been a great way to share our experiences with ... read more

Beware this blog is going to be full of random thoughts! We have officially made it one month in China! Can you believe it?! Just as we expected, time is flying by! Guess we must be having fun! If you’ve kept up with the blog, you’ve read about all the fun we’re having experiencing new adventures everyday! Well, during my first month I have learned that there are some cultural differences that I am never going to get over. I wouldn’t call myself high maintenance… I like camping, wildlife, experiencing new places (clean or dirty, exotic or luxurious); hell I’ll even eat chicken out of an open-air bin and taste pig’s tongue! But I do enjoy living a rather comfortable and clean lifestyle in which I don’t have to worry about contracting diseases from foreign creatures ... read more

Up until now I have been an innocent bystander in this blog - throwing in my random tidbits for Joni to add. I’ve actually quite enjoyed reading her posts and have been amused reliving some of our initial experiences. Anyways, Joni has asked me to be a guest blogger. I’m not sure if this is because she truly wants me to be a part of this or because she just wants some free material, but regardless, I jumped at the opportunity. The title of this blog might make you want to move right on to Joni’s next posting…after all, how exciting can a trip to the barber be? If living in China for this brief period has taught me anything - it’s that even day-to-day life is an adventure. Whether it’s crossing the street in a ... read more

Shanghai World Expo

Last Saturday (October 9)… we had the exciting opportunity to visit the World Expo, which is coincidentally in Shanghai while we’re here! Since May, the World Expo has attracted over 60 million visitors to the Shanghai area. Can you imagine the boost in economy of the city hosting such a large event (wake up United States)! Well, Expo was amazing to see! If you don’t know what Expo is, it’s basically a big park (similar to Disney World’s Epcot) where you can walk around and learn about countries around the world without actually travelling there. Most countries build a pavilion which represents the character of their nation inside and out. We didn’t go inside many pavilions since the lines were miles long, but as engineers we enjoyed the architectural features of the buildings more than we ... read more
