Day 521 (31.08.08) Leaving Greymouth we were once again on the road south. Mum and Dad had spotted a reconstructed gold rush town and fancied popping in for a poke around. Not thinking we would get anything else out of it than we had previously gained from our previous visit to Sovereign Hill (another very similar spot in Ballarat, Aus) we decided to go for a little jaunt of our own. Looking at the map we spotted a lake not too far away that we would aim for. After a little while the adventure started - the tarmac road ended and the unsealed road began. At first the road was great, nice and firm, not many rocks and very flat - with great scenery flying by life was great. Gradually as we continued on, more and ... read more

Day 520 (30.08.08) Following the Buller Gorge we left our little pad and were soon at the Buller Swing Bridge. Keeping it cheap we both decided to pay for our ticket to go across on the impressive 110m bridge and do the bush walk the other side, however Mum and Dad splashed out the little extra for the 'flying fox' route back - Extreme NZ fever was hitting the olds! Walking across the bridge gave us a great view and the walk was fantastic, however when it came to the zip wire - Mum had a bout of nerves and passed her ticket onto Mark! It was great fun and if we get the chance we'll upload a video for you guys. Pushing on we stopped at the beach in Westport for yet another stunning picnic ... read more

Day 519 (29.08.08) We had wanted to go sea kayaking in the Abel Tasman but the weather wasn't up to much and we decided we'd have to leave this treat for another visit. We set off and made our way over the fertile plains in the Nelson area where a lot of fruit is grown. A quick stop at a little roadside stall saw us gain a huge bag of kiwis for the bargain price of $2 - a good thing to look out for around here. We stopped into the Nelson Lakes National Park for a quick visit and chose Lake Rotoiti as it was the most accessible. We made a quick loop of the Bellbird walk accompanied by some fantastic birdsong - we did spot a couple of bell birds but they were a ... read more

Day 518 (28.08.08) One of the areas we'd really wanted to explore was the Abel Tasman National Park with it's coastal tracks and tiny beaches and inlets making for a great place to tramp. We headed up the coast on a water taxi stopping briefly for a look at the Split Apple Rock and the Seal Colony on the way. Towards the end of our journey we were also joined by a friendly bottlenose dolphin who had a great time ducking and diving in the wake from our boat. We disembarked at Tonga Bay and began our walk along the excellent track that hugs the coastline of the park. We tramped through native bushland and past waterfalls, streams and bays with barely a soul for company (the benefits of being here in the winter time). It ... read more

Day 516 (26.08.08) Since Jean and Mike were headed off on the mail boat cruise of the Pelorus Sounds today we thought we'd do our own tour of the sounds by jumping in the van and driving along the road that follows the rough path of the Queen Charlotte Walking Track. The weather was pretty terrible with mist and rain already settled in before we left. We had mixed views of the sounds during our drive but what we did see of the small bays and inlets that make up the sounds was great. After a car picnic lunch we headed back to Havelock. Day 517 (27.08.08) All packed up we left Havelock early to drive further along the top of the South Island to make our way towards the Abel Tasman National Park. We stopped ... read more

Day 514 (24.08.08) We planned to travel up the coast a little today and so we were up early and on the road before 9. The weather was a little grey and drizzly so we were glad to be in the comfort of our little van. After a short drive we stopped for coffee at a beautiful restaurant called The Store where we toasted ourselves by the open fire (although stopping for coffee is apparently not something Jean and Mike 'usually' do!). A little way up the road is a place called Ohau Point where you can again view fur seals along the coast. The extra bonus here though is that if you walk just 5 minutes up a track from the road you can follow a stream up to the Ohau waterfall where you will ... read more

A Whale 'Tale' from Kaikoura

Day 513 (23.08.08) The major 'tourist attraction' of Kaikoura is the marine life that you can view there. The continental shelf lies very close to the shores of the town and due to the deep trench formed there it is home to wildlife not often seen that close to the mainland. So today we were off in search of the Sperm Whales that can be seen here year round. Boarding a rather plush vessel we set out with our eyes glued to the water to see if we could be the first to glimpse a water spout - the first sign that a whale is at the surface to take a few breaths before diving down for up to 2 hours at a time. Before we knew it a whale had been spotted by the crew ... read more

Day 511-512 (21.08.08 - 22.08.08) After some manic last days in Oz we had decided we needed to have a day or so to do something really relaxing once we arrived in New Zealand and Hanmer Springs was just the place. At the foot of snow covered mountains the little town is renowned for it's thermal pools and this seemed like a perfect place for our 'chill out' time. We checked into the pools and spent the next couple of hours relaxing in beautiful rock pools at a variety of temperatures (anywhere from about 29 - 41 degrees) as we looked on to the mountains beyond. The weather was beautiful despite being pretty chilly when we hopped between pools and we had a fantastic time. We decided to explore the area a little more and after ... read more

Day 510 (20/08/08) Not really getting any sleep whatsoever, Andre and Franny came over to pick us up in the middle of the night for our trip to the airport. Slightly overestimating the time it would take we arrived with plenty of time for a coffee and a bite to eat with them before an emotional goodbye - you know we'll really miss you guys! Bleary eyed we checked our bags in and went through to all of the necessary checks before a lengthy wait catching up on the olympics on the TV and yesterday's paper. 4am we boarded our quick hop to Sydney getting our first plane brekkie inflight, and after a rush through to catch our transfer we had our second brekkie on the next flight (i reckon those hobbits were onto something with ... read more

Day 503 to 509 (11.08.08 - 17.08.08) Well this would be our last full week in Melbourne so we were to be busy getting stuff sorted and continuing to catch up with people before we left. On Monday night Tiana came round to start moving the larger things from the flat as we parted with the bed frame, table and chairs and the flat began to look emptier and emptier. We went to our last dance class on Tuesday night which was the usual fun but very sad to say goodbye to all our fellow dancers who were a great bunch. We were now starting to say goodbyes to people for the last time and feeling the sadness that comes with leaving a place that you've made your home. It's almost stranger for us to leave ... read more
