Today we move on to Tikal National Park, UNESCO World Heritage Site in El Peten. Our flight here was painless and we drove to our lodge in the jungle in the pitch darkness, occasionally seeing a sign warning of snakes flash by from the trees. Next morning we bounced out of bed ready to explore after being woken EARLY by an amazing noise...a series of whoops, both high and low in an complex jumble of sound. We had no idea whatsoever what sort of beast could have made that noise and thought maybe it was monkeys. We learnt at breakfast that this exotic call was from a rather bulky brown plain-looking bird called the Montezuma Oropendola. We came to love this call throughout our stay. Another unlikely bird call we came to hear was squeak, just ... read more

Santiago Atitlán, our destination today is the largest of the lakeside Mayan communities. It's main claim to fame is its worship of Maximón, an idol formed by the fusion of traditional Mayan deities, Catholic saints and conquistador legends. The institutionalized effigy of Maximón is under the control of a local religious brotherhood and resides in various houses of its membership during the course of a year. It is a great privelidge to have Maximón or Saint Simon stay in your house, partly as you can charge people to come visit him. We asked some kids where we could find his current locatio and took us there directly. This deity is rather amusing, enjoying strong liquor, cigars and money! He is a very human deity..... the legend of Maximón has it that one day while the villiage ... read more

Since arriving at Lago de Atitlan we have come to love Pana, the variety of cosy eateries and the quite gentle bargaining of the local tradespeople. We have found a lovely garden restaurant surrounded on three sides by trees and foliage out of which birds sing and dart out to peck crumbs. We have also enjoyed a vegetarian Indian restaurant which we frequent and we even got stuck in there when a sudden thunder and lightening episode was followed by REALLY heavy rain! No wonder it is so green and lush here! We sat sipping soup and chewing warm bread watching the sides of the red dust road transform into two rivers broken by a gradually lessening track in the centre. A man selling t-shirts on a stall opposite kept moving his plastic chair further and ... read more

We woke early and after dining on a very extensive breakfast of bread, plantain, black bean (much enjoyed by myself but admittedly the marmite of Guatemala cuisine!) fruit and tea we packed up and boarded the bus for Panajachel, more affectionately known as 'Pana', a small town on the lakeside of the mysterious Lago de Atitlan. We drove with a varied group, a couple of backpackers from the US and some spanish tourists. Several hours were passed watching the Guatemalan countryside roll past and reading about the folk legends surrounding the Lago itself. As we arrived, the 'roads' of Pana seemed too narrow to accomodate both our fairly small, narrow minibus and the throngs of people bustling around the higgledy-piggledy stalls that lined the main street. We stopped in what seemed the centre of the hustle ... read more

Well the long awaited arrival in Guatemala City finally came! We landed and were greeted by a young guy who looked too young to drive, got into a van with a man smoking what smelled like apple shisha and tore away into the night. We drove, the air thick with the smell of keroseen, unfamiliar and exciting stopping on route for petrol. Our driver didn't even turn off the engine whilst refilling the fuel! A guy with a massive machine gun stood in front of the petrol station looking threatening. We turned and looked at each other and gulped, what have we let ourselves in for?! We raced on through the night and eventually came to a quiet calm streetlamp lit colonial city, Antigua. Antigua is a spanish colonial city nestled in the central Guatemalan highlands, ... read more
