I left Sydney on the 20th of December and headed to Canberra with a lovely group and tour guide - "Bananas." We went to the initially modern and ugly Houses of Parliament, which was very educational. We went inside and learnt a bit more about it and came to appreciate it more! You could go up onto the roof garden, symbolising that the people control the parliament and not the other way round. We then drove in the Snowy Mountains. When we got to the hostel we jumped into the hot tub before getting our dinner. A fun time was had by all after dinner thanks to my first and last session with a box of goon. The following day the group set out to Mount Kosciuszko (named after a Polish guy and pronounced Kozzy oss ... read more

Well, I am exhausted! On leaving Byron Bay I went on to "Surf Camp," where I attempted to surf, I didn't get very far though, everytime I tried to kneel (standing was going to be far too difficult!) I would succeed for a short while but as soon as I got confident I would fall off into the water, not overly pleasant! No worries though, the next day we did the massive drive to Sydney. On arrival I checked in quickly, found my friend Anna and went to walk the Harbour Bridge. It gave us a nice view of the city. It wasn't too difficult but we were still very tired afterwards! Today we attempted to "do" the rest of Syndey and I feel we managed it! First thing we got the bus to Bondi Beach ... read more

After I left Kelli's on Friday I headed on to Surfers Paradise, which is a high rise tourist town. I didn't see much of it to be honest but I did go to the water park "Wet n Wild," which was awesome, not as great as "Water World" in Colorado but still good fun! On Sunday I arrived into Byron Bay, it's supposed to be was Surfers was a few years ago, but I think it's trying to be a bit hippier, if that's a word. I met up with Anna, who I met on my first day out of sticky Cairns, for dinner. We had naughty pudding, honey comb and cookie dogh ice cream and a mars bar slice! On Monday morning I went snorkeling, we went out to sea to do it, so it ... read more

After seeing the sunrise I caught my bus to Brisbane. I pottered around for a bit then caught a train back up north to a town called Caboolture to see Kelli, who I met when I was in Canada. I found her hard at work and waited a couple of minutes for her to finish. We set out to drive even further up north to Caloundra (all this going down and up was the best option I promise!) to where Kelli was house sitting. During the drive I said that I wanted to see more kangeroos in the wild, so she drove me to some! There were about 20+ just hanging out on the grass by the sea. I got so excited but Kelli was convinced they would attack us with their sharp claws. We were ... read more

After two long days of travelling I arrived into Rainbow Beach, one of the gateways to Fraser Island. The following morning I met the beast of a truck/bus that was to take me around Fraser Island. Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world, is full of rainbow rocks, creeks, shipwrecks, lakes, rainforrest, beaches, dingos and people. Our guide took us to see much that there was to see and morning tea and lunch were provided! Lake McKenzie was beautiful but it was absolutely full of tourists, I walked 5 minutes round the lake to find an almost deserted beach, I couldn't understand why people hadn't made the walk! The day I left Rainbow Beach, a friend and I decided to get up at 4am and do a 45 minute hike on an empty ... read more

After the slight anticlimax of an afternoon doing washing after seeing the Whitsundays, I went out with some of the passengers and crew from "Whitsunday Magic". We sat by the lagoon in Airlie Beach and a good time was had by all. I didn't stay too late though as I had a big day of travelling ahead of me... We left Airlie Beach around 7am and didn't arrive into Kroombit Cattle Station until the early evening, what a drive! We did manage to play lawn balls and see a few kangeroos on the way though. On arrival we painted our faces and sprayed our hair bright colours purely for the fun of it, it seemed. We sat down to a cooked meal - always welcome, and spent most of the evening trying out the mechanical bull. ... read more

I arrived in Airlie Beach on Sunday evening after a few hours in a bus. I spent the evening and Monday morning pottering around the town and getting ready for my sailing trip! I stepped aboard "Whitsunday Magic" on Monday afternoon and spent three days and nights on her. She was a beautiful boat, really traditional, I felt like I was on a pirate ship! I shared a cabin with a couple of other girls, it was tiny but actually quite spacious compared with the rooms that held double beds! There were 22 passengers on the boat and 8 crew members. Each day we had breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, lots of yummy seafood each time, it felt quite decadent and it was nice to be away from the mob of packbackers and ... read more

I arrived in Cairns on Thursday morning. To give you an idea of the weather please imagine being in a really hot and humid green house, I didn't realise how tropical it would be! At first I spent some time hopping from air conditioned place to air conditioned place! The thing I found most exciting about Cairns were the bats, although perhaps not everyone's favourite. I was walking into the main part of town from my hostel when I heard what I thought were noisy birds. On closer inspection it turned out that several enormous trees were full of hundreds of bats who were all quite happily hanging upside down in the sunshine! In the evening it started bucketing it down with rain, I thought Australia was in a drought but apparently not in the north, ... read more

Well, I finally arrived this morning (Wednesday) having left on Monday afternoon, I was really dreading the journey but it wasn't anywhere here as bad as I thought it would be! I couldn't check into my hostel right away when I arrived, so I had to hang around in the clothes I'd been in for 48 hours, YUM... After doing lots of planning I managed to check in and shower, not the nicest of hostels but it's only one night. I have read that Melbourne is supposed to have a European feel, however in reality it looks like America and it is much hotter than the parts of Europe I've seen. Earlier today I went to the Queen Victoria summer night market, felt rather touristy but I think it was actually mostly full of Australians. I ... read more
