Sadly my time in Japan has come to an end, I can't believe how quickly the time flew, but then I have only spent a week here as opposed to several weeks like in OZ and NZ. On Wednesday I spent most of the day updating this and going to the cinema, a theraptic day! I did also go to an archade where I played Mario Kart and took silly pictures of myself - sooo fun. Yesteday however was a bit more active! Holly had another day off so we went to Spa World! It was kind of a mix between spas I've been to in England, the ones in NZ and the baths in Sweden. For a start you had to be naked and segregated like in Sweden. Holly and I were there together 3 ... read more

On Tuesday, the last day of my train pass, I headed into Kyoto itself and decided to follow another lonely planet walking tour, walking up Chawa Zaka, Sannen Zaka, Ninen-Zaka, which truth be had are 3 very touristy streets, but they were very cool, full of shops selling traditional Japanese food, sandles and bags etc. At one point I needed to go to the loo, so I asked the owner of a shop I had just bought something from. Well, I said "toilet," I didn't actually made a Japanese sentence. Anyway, she let me borrow hers, although she did warn me it was going to be a Japanese one... Along the way I stopped along the way at Kiyomizu-dera, a large temple complex. I first went into the belly of the Buddha (I think, maybe womb), ... read more

Monday was a day trip with Holly, as it was her day off. We went to the famous Fushimi-inari tiasha, famous not by name perhaps, but the place is iconic and I recognised it as soon as I saw it. It's a hill/mountain, full of shrines, with walk ways lined with hundreds of red gates - torii, very very cool! We took lots of very touristy pictures. We both felt very old when our legs trembled at the effort of climbing all the steps, awesome anyway... In the evening we went to a Mexican restaurant, very japanese... I love Mexican though so I'll eat it anywhere!... read more

On Sunday I used my 4 day Kansai train pass to go to Nara. Kansai is the region surounding Osaka and Kyoto etc. I decided to follow a walking tour shown in the lonely planet, so I wandered up to Nara-Koen which is a big park in this city. Incidentally I did see some farm land on this train trip, not just bumper to bumber buildings! The park is full of dear and visitors are allowed to feed them with the biscuits for sale. I bought some but barely had time to take the paper ribbon off them, as dear started to head butt my bum and nearly push me over! A small crowd of Japanese tourists stood watching me and laughing, I quickly handed my camera to one of them - I didn't want them ... read more

Asia » Japan » Hyogo » Himeji February 2nd 2009

On my second day in Japan I headed out of the city to Himeji. However, for the entire hour's journey I didn't see a single patch of non-city, every single square inch was built up! Japan's population is over double that of the UK's, but I don't think they have double the space, so you can understand why it is so packed!. I think it also has something to do with the amount of inhospitable land full of mountains, people have to live in the flat parts. Himeji however was lovely, be it completely built up. The walk to its castle was a straight line from the station, which was easy enough. However, I was looking for a restaurant recomended in my guide book, so I scanned the streets for a sign saying "Me-n-me," forgetting that ... read more

Well. Wow. I've made it to Japan and it's every thing I ever thought it would be! I arrived into Osaka airport safe and sound from Auckland, got through security and onto the bus that would take me to to Holly, a friend of mine who has been living in Japan for about a year and a half, I could not believe how long it had been since I had seen her! We went back to her flat, stopping off at the supermarket that was lit up like a Christmas display, so beautiful but ugly! We had a little chat back at base and then went out for a rather Japanese dinner... We had Okonomiyaki, which is a kind of omlette with cabbage in, well that's what Holly said, it turns out the name means you can ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Bay of Islands » Paihia January 28th 2009

So I got the kiwi bus to Auckland and met up with Nemo from the Lemmings - great to see a friendly familiar face! On Monday I got the bus up to Paihia, which is a beautiful little sea side town, but not as we know it. One evening I celebrated Australia Day on the beach with a camp fire! I walked up to the house where the Treaty of Waitangi, which is where a happy friendly agreement was signed between the Maori people and the Brits, Not much else to report though as I spent much of the time doing little jobs I had to do and going to the doctors and hospitals! I'm fine, but still had to get some stuff sorted! Time for Japan...... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Waitomo Caves January 24th 2009

I think it's pronounced "Why-tuhmo" - the tumo part said quite quickly. Can't really get that across, I've been try to say things in the correct Maori way, but it's quite hard. Some people say it doesn't matter, others laugh when I say things incorrectly! Maori for example, the mao is pronounced like the first syllable in mouldy. So there you go. Waitomo is a tiny village, but it is famous for its caves and glowworms. I caught the "Waitomo Wanderer" bus at the crack of dawn last Friday, and I was convinced to go "Black Water Rafting,"which involves going along a river in cave, in an inner tyre. I was also convinced to just stay the day, not the two I had planned. Anyone who has read by blog recently would see that this was ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Rotorua January 22nd 2009

Rotorua is known for geothermal activity, i.e. geysers, bubbling mud, hot springs, quite unlike anything I have ever seen! Due to all this activity there is a lot of sulphur in the air, which means that the town stinks of fart. Seriously, it's quite disgusting, quite often a gust of wind will blow it right into your face. Jokes welcome. Some of the hotels use the hot pools etc to power their hotels, very interesting! With a friend, I went out to Waimangu Volcanic Valley. We took a boat trip around an Lake Rotomahana, which is made up of several craters formed in eruptions a hundred or so years ago. We then took a walk, with some hike aspects. through the rest of the volcanic landscape. There were disgusting looking white and yellow bubbling mud pools, ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Taupo January 21st 2009

I left windy (and it really was) Wellington bright and early on Sunday for a long bus right up to Taupo for a couple of days, a little town on a beautiful lake. The weather was kind of poo, so sorry for lack of pictures! I tried to go on a bike ride with my friend, but it chucked it down with rain :-( So we did some shopping instead. On Tuesday we took a "Float Plane" aka a sea plane, up to Rotorua. It was across between a boat AND a plane, which kind of sounds horrendous for fear and travel sickness, but it was fine. Great in fact, amazing views taking off from Lake Taupo and over to Lake Rotorua. We were only flying very low, it really put into perspective just how far ... read more
