It was lovely to wake up in Grand Canyon National Park. No driving. No parking. We got up early (6:30ish) and walked up to the bus stop at the beginning of Hermit's Rest Road. For most of our time out to Hermit's Rest, there were very few people. At most of the stops, there were very few people. It was so nice, and so different, to be there with such quiet (aside from our boys) and space. We didn't get up for sunrise, which was at about 5:12 local time, but the shadows and colors were still quite good for most of our time. We stopped at most of the viewpoints, took many photos, and call it a day in time to check out of the lodge. Cole and I stopped to shop one last time, ... read more

We finally got to sleep in, sort of, today, given that we didn't have a long way to drive. It was nice, because it's getting hot and gave us more time at our ultimate destination. Nine years ago, Jeff and I drove through Petrified Forest National Park very, very quickly. It was technically after closing time, so we basically got to drive the road and look at scenery, but couldn't stop at any of the pull-offs for fear of the National Park Service ranger coming after us. It has been on my to-do list for a return for a while, and do it we did. We came in from I-40, so saw beautiful vistas of the painted desert. We saw a few animals, ravens, etcetera. Liam took many pictures of them, not so much of the ... read more

Before heading out this morning, we had just under 800 miles to do before tomorrow evening. That would be two reasonable days, but I really wanted to get to the Grand Canyon tomorrow before sunset. That meant many miles today. So, instead of driving on the old road, as we did nine years ago, we spent a lot of time on I-40. We didn't see much for nostalgia, but the scenery definitely changes in New Mexico. We did make two stops. The first was at Palo Duro Canyon State Park south of Amarillo. It is reported to be the second largest canyon in the United States, but you wouldn't know it driving up to it. Texas is really pretty flat, and then it just opened up. We drove the park road and back because we ride ... read more

After awakening at 3:30 to a weather alert (thankfully just a flash flood warning), we actually awoke later than the previous mornings. It looked like it was going to be a terrible day, horribly windy and 70% chance of rain with strong storms. There've been two big tornados here over the last couple weeks, and I've been more than a little worried about another one. Thankfully, it turned out to be a beautiful day--not too hot, no rain. Our first stop was the Museum of Osteology in Moore. It opened in 2010, with one person's collection started when he was seven years old. The entryway sets the tone, with a lion attacking an antelope, jawbones of two different types of whales. There is also a small exhibit showing beetles cleaning a variety of skulls. I apparently ... read more

Today was truly all about the road. We had a lovely breakfast at Parkway Hotel in St Louis, after which Liam had a lively conversation with an older gentleman while waiting for us to load up. We then hopped on Route 66, and occasionally off it, if there weren't any interesting sites. Along the way, we found an abandoned cemetery in the woods, Devil's Elbow, Gaboney Cave, Rainbow Bridge and Totem Pole Park, as well as a variety of other minor little stops. This may be the longest completely driving day, and that's a good thing. Tomorrow we will visit a museum (assuming it's still open after the tornado) and a memorial, and drive no more than a few hours. ADDENDUM: I wrote the above paragraph as we were heading to our hotel in Oklahoma City. ... read more

We did a lot of driving today, but actually got to get out for a little while, which felt good. We started in Willowbrook, Illinois, and drove Route 66 through many smallish towns. We stopped for an earthcache in Joliet and pulled up just as a barge was going through a drawbridge. We saw that bridge close, and then the one down river go up, too. The boys (and parents) thought it was very cool. We also stopped at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield to see Lincoln's Tomb. There were storms in the area over the past 24 hours, which was very apparent along much of drive. Our first indication was a huge chunk of silo in the middle of a field, with the closest farm buildings across the highway. The next was a destroyed barn ... read more

I've always thought of this day as the day before our vacation starts. The original plan for this trip was to drive Route 66 with Mom and Dad, although it's morphed into significantly more than that. Today was the day we arrived at the beginning of the road. Having said that, we are definitely in vacation mode. Aside from one phone call I need to make Monday, I have no work responsibilities until we return--no access to the EMR, no access to my e-mail. As expected, we adults were all up quite early (5:30 is just not a normal time to be awakening). We got ready and essentially dragged the boys out of bed, and were able to leave our driveway at 6:18, after taking a few photos. The first leg was just driving--US 14 to ... read more

We awoke to a less wet day. It was still quite cloudy, but the forecast suggested periods free from rain. I had picked this park for the butterfly garden and burial mounds and views, so we drove over to the Nelson Unit to do a little hiking. I also, of course, wanted a geocache for today, and the only one around here was a multi. We realized the first part was back in town, so Emily, Cole and I went walking and sent Liam and the men to find the needed information. Cole picked dandelions in the garden while I did a little desperately needed weeding. We're a little early in the season for great flowers, and a little cool, I think, for butterflies. We hadn't heard from the men, so we took off on the ... read more

After fifteen months of waiting and 5 1/2 hours of driving, we arrived at Bellevue State Park last night to a less than warm welcome. The tenter across from our site started swearing at us within minutes, first offended by the size of our camper, and then by the fact that we were from Minnesota. Thankfully, he stopped after I pointed out we had children with us, but it wasn't a great start. We settled in to sleep around quiet time, only to realize that the mice may have eaten much of our sound proofing, since we could hear other neighbors long into the night. But enough whining . . . It was a bit drizzly when we got up this morning, but Dean and Emily's camper was nice and cozy, especially with fresh crepes, whipped ... read more

For our summer vacation this year, we are returning to one long trip. It started with the suggestion that we take my parents on Route 66, but has ended up to be a nearly month-long tour of the western US. We have been, of course, but we will introduce them to Arizona, California, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana, and perhaps a couple other states as well. I hope it will be a lot of fun and memorable for the right reasons. The title suggests we are almost ready to leave. That's not entirely true. I am very ready to leave from the perspective of needing a vacation. I'm ready to be away from the responsibilities; I'm ready for the boys to be done with school. I'm not, however, ready to leave tomorrow. We are ... read more
