We were supposed to have done a float tour on the Koyukuk River today, but Jeff's instructions when he called to make reservations a month ago, to "check in when you get to Coldfoot", was pretty bad information. The tour company did not actually make note of our interest, because they did not have anyone available to give the tour. Well, then. After eating a breakfast of sourdough pancakes and scrambled eggs, made and served by Uta, our host, she suggested we drive north on the Dalton to Atigun Pass, the high point of the Dalton Highway. We figured it would let us see those sights without having to slow down for photos tomorrow when we will be in more of a rush. It was really very beautiful with the snow. The temperature dipped to 25 ... read more

Today was a very long day. We started early for a shortish drive to Sirius Sled Dogs. We miss our puppies terribly, so Jeff thought it would be a good idea to visit. We started by meeting some of the dogs and learning how to harness them into the line. They were v e r y excited, as were the boys. We hopped on the sled (a stripped down VW Beetle) and took a short ride, before letting the dogs rest for the ride back. Jeff was impressed by how fast they went. I just thought it was a lot of fun. The best part, though, was playing with the dogs afterward. The boys adored Basin, the 8 week old puppy. I could have pet Ember forever, and pulled off clumps of her winter coat. Jeff ... read more

Today we drove to Chena Hot Springs and had some unexpected bonuses. On the way to Chena we saw a moose sow with a calf cross the road in front of us, with the only downside of that experience being that they crossed and entered the woods too quickly for us to get a picture. At one of our many stops on the way to Chena we discovered a beautiful spot at a bend in the river where we paused to take pictures and skip stones. Liam and Cole both worked on their skipping skills and were able to hit a pretty good number of skips. We were happy to have the Jeep going down the access road since it was not well maintained. While at Chena we toured the Aurora Ice Museum and then took ... read more

No one volunteered to write today's blogs, so it's me again. Our day started out much later than we would have liked because the motor home decided not to start. (It also decided not to level, not to let the front window shade move.) That is not an ideal situation in the first third of a vacation, or perhaps at any point in a vacation. Thankfully, Tim at Sourdough is a master mechanic and had lots of ideas for Jeff. (He's the chef, so he couldn't go look at our camper until after breakfast hours were over.) At one point, Jeff tried something he had suggested and the power came back on. Okay, then. The trip to Fairbanks was not a long one. Road conditions were similar. There was some construction, but not a terrible amount ... read more

I woke up at Hi Country RV Park. We got ready to leave. We left. We drove and drove and drove when Dad said bumps and more bumps! We got to Sourdough Campground. I read a little while and noticed a husky. It is a breed of dog. Her name was Lakota, a very jumpy dog. We put and played with her and then I went to a pancake toss to win a free breakfast at Fast Eddie's. Then I picked up pine cones and got to watch and movie and eat M&M's. ~~~ There were a lot of bumps on the road today, more than any other day this trip. There was also a fair amount of construction with which to contend. Cole spent almost the whole day reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of ... read more

Today, we went to some very cool places, as in a museum, a dam and a historical boat. We started out today with me waking up late, but we still got going on time. First, we stopped at Miles Canyon in Whitehorse for a walk to find a cache. It was a bit scary because (1) it was very steep and usually either went right off the trail and into the water off a cliff, or a short woodland area separated from the cliff and river, and 2, a sign said the river had a very strong undertow and current. Then we found some caches, and then went to Beringia Interpretive Centre, an ice age museum on the ancient animals of Beringia. When you walk in there is a giant woolly mammoth skeleton along with a ... read more

I started this morning early after Kim’s phone, which was still on central daylight time, woke me. After pulling out at 4:38, I only drove 45 miles through the mountains until we needed to stop for fuel, but they were not yet open so we paused for a while until they were. During those 45 miles I only saw two other vehicles, both semis, and six elk. It was a very pretty drive through light snow to start and then clearing to grant me wonderful views of fog-shrouded peaks and glassy mountain lakes. After fuel, Kim was awake, but the boys remained in bed for another long while. By the end of the day the boys had finally gotten up and we had seen one moose, one grizzly bear, three black bears, five bison, many elk ... read more

Snow on the mountain, Water in the sky. The ride is long and just as loud. Why don't we just fly? Jeff had originally allotted a bit more than five days to get to Whitehorse, but we realized yesterday we could probably make it in two. We hoped today would be the longer of those two days so we could check in early enough tomorrow to enjoy the campground. There really isn't a lot to say, since it was just a long drive. I was very tempted to call this page, "Look, it's a . . ." The answers would have been tree, ditch, sign, clump of dirt, and many things other than animal. Thankfully, we also saw the real thing. In the morning, it was still common things to home--red-tailed hawks, a bald eagle, a ... read more

Today was just a day. We actually drove less than yesterday, but got a later start and stopped earlier. We only saw the sun once, right now after a rainstorm. The rest of the day was just gray. --- Miles Driven: 503 Geocaches Found: 4 Creatures Seen: An elk, in Elk Island National Park. We also saw a number of foals, including one nursing, and then the usual animals. Approximate Yards Knit: 99 Conversation of the Day: K: Cole, you're going to need to write a blog entry. As befits the first major driving day of our trip, we drove 650 miles. Most people we talk to think that's crazy. For us, it's almost short. We had mostly good weather, little to no traffic and decent roads. We were thinking we would only be able to average 55 or so, but we easily made 60. Why, then, were we on the road 14 1/2 hours? Well . . . We spent almost two hours in Minot. Our local bank didn't have any Canadian cash, so we were directed to the downtown one here. We found a parking place just outside the construction zone and then walked in. There was a line and complications, so that took a while. We also needed supplies, so we drove to a K-Mart. I wanted to find a specific ... read more
