Truly, this is just a continuation of yesterday. We drove through Chicago shortly before midnight, through light rain and gorgeous lightning strikes that thankfully did not come close. Jeff slept a little; I slept a little. The boys slept all night. It was beautiful, but we are too old for this. I had planned to go to the Royal Ontario Museum as our first stop, but didn't count on how slow 100 km/hour is, nor on how many people there would be in Toronto. We drove along the runners for the Toronto Triathlon, saw the bikers and the swimmers. Toronto to Ottawa is also not a short drive, so we decided to only have one destination for the day: the Hockey Hall of Fame. Jeff has played hockey for 38 years or so, with no plans ... read more

It's been some time since I posted on here. A friend has created blogs for all of his travels, past and present, which I would love to do at some point. Today is not the day. Today was the first day of a 30-day trip. I desperately need the time away, but I've been dreading it for a while. I don't actually like to be gone from home that long. I'm going to miss our puppies, even though we have caring people staying with them. I'm worried about some of my patients, not that my partners and their specialists aren't perfectly capable of caring for them while I'm gone. I'm worried about my boss, Jen. And yet . . . Rather than leave yesterday as planned, our eldest requested we leave today, after a birthday party ... read more

While visiting Fort Point yesterday, we talked about driving the Golden Gate Bridge since it was such a beautiful day. It seemed sort of silly, though, to drive across and back. When we got out of the hotel this morning, though, we realized it would have been better. The coastal fog was crazy, limiting our vision significantly. Oh, well. The fog didn't matter much while visiting Muir Woods National Monument. Liam, Jeff and I walked ahead amongst the trees in the Bohemian Grove, trying to take photos which actually show the height of the trees, but mostly just wandering and appreciating the quiet coolness, and magnificence of the grove. Cole hung back with Grandpa and Grandma, which helped with the quiet for us. Out of respect for Mom and Dad, we decided not to walk all ... read more

The boys specifically requested a battlefield for this trip, as they do for most. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of battlefields west of the Mississippi. (We've been to some named battlefields, but they're mostly massacres on one side or the other.) We were excited, then, to discover Fort Point National Historic Site, not a battlefield, but close enough. It's also at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge, so it was somewhere to get a different perspective. It was also one of the best maintained forts we've seen. The boys, and we, had a great time exploring all the different rooms--the powder storage, living quarters, batteries, etcetera. Liam loved looking over the edge at the water below, while Cole preferred to stay as close to the center of everything as possible. The boys, Dad and I ... read more

Jeff, Liam and I visited Alcatraz in November 2004 and it was a very interesting place. There is also an interesting virtual cache there, so we decided to go again. After spending far too long on the Bay Bridge, we easily found parking and then stood in line, too. The ride over was brief, and then a crush of people disembarked for self-guided tours of the island. The other five all did the audio tour, and it looked like all of them were engrossed in what it had to say. They walked through the cell blocks, the library, dining hall, visiting area. I took a slightly different tactic, following the escape plan written out by the cache owner. It brought me out the recreation area to a path with an overlook of the Golden Gate Bridge ... read more

Today's drive was about getting to San Francisco while finding a variety of caches, as well as seeing Pinnacles National Park. We saw more wildlife today and classic cars, less coast and vineyards. Pinnacles National Park, converted from a national monument in January, protects the eroded leftovers of the western half of an extinct volcano, now 150 miles from its eastern half. There are hundreds of miles of hiking trails, and numerous talus caves that house over a dozen species of bats. The collective we aren't really up for hiking or caving, so we mostly just visited the few viewpoints available on the eastern side. We saw deer and squirrels and some beautiful birds, although they were too fast for us or our cameras. We didn't see any rattlesnakes, although the boys really wanted to. Jeff ... read more

. . . a 5 1/2 hour emergency room visit and a $5,000 bill. Actually, I'm not sure about the bill, since that won't have arrived yet, but the first part was entirely true. He wasn't feeling well by the end of their day at Disneyland yesterday, but we thought he could drink a ton of fluids, sleep some, get cool and be fine. He looked like crap, though, and his temperature climbed rather than dropped, so I insisted he go in. He's fine, and that's his story to tell, but it was an interesting visit. While waiting, I watched a bunch of episodes of Call of the Wildman on Animal Planet. It's about a Kentucky guy who grew up catching turtles and now gets called to catch all sorts of other critters. He was the ... read more

Today was our one day at Disneyland. It was Monday, so we expected the crowds to be less, the lines to be shorter. It seemed that way to start, but it didn't last. If anything, it seemed that there were more people today. I'm wondering if that had to do with narrower walkways, though? It's hard to tell. I don't think Disney publishes their day by day visit numbers. The day started out great. We got in at opening time and sent Jeff off to get fastpasses. The boys and I saw a variety of characters, and were able to get pictures without waiting in line too long. I don't have it with us, but there is a great photo of Jason and Lorrin with Chip and Dale from the '80's. It looks like their characters ... read more

One of Mom's requests for this trip was to go to Disneyland. Jeff is not a fan of Disney, at all. He doesn't like the marketing, the hype, the people. He has mentioned many times that he'd rather just sit in the car and read a book. Despite that, he agreed that sending me alone with the boys wouldn't be nice, or make any sense. So, today was the first day. We chose to go to California Adventure first, for reasons I no longer remember. After entering the park, we headed straight for Cars Land, figuring that would be where the boys would have the most fun. We saw a line for fastpasses for Radiator Springs Racers and asked if it was really worth it. We were assured it most definitely was, so Jeff stood in line ... read more

Technically, our goal for the day was to drive from Kingman, Arizona, to the end of Route 66, and then to Anaheim. In truth, though, it was to find more than 100 geocaches. On a section of Route 66 south of I-40, there are more than 800. Dad would love to have done all of them, but we had to consider the time, the heat, and sheer boredom. We worked out a system. Dad would jump out and get it, I would roll down the window and stamp the log. Jeff would roll up the window, while I recapped the stamp and Dad would get back in. It worked pretty well, until I thought he looked too tired, and then I made him sit. There isn't a lot of Route 66 memorabilia in California, although there's ... read more
