I met Sayuri today in Shinjuku for a late dinner, and since I'd be wanting to see some more autumn colors this season, I decided to make a whole day of it and hit another post-it in my guidebook: Rikugien! Rikugien is a walking garden that is very famous for having "views" that change as you walk, so that the surroundings are always different. It also has illuminated fall colors starting the last week in November, though I went during daylight so I didn't see those. It was a very popular place today, and my fellow photographers were out in full force! I actually shot the garden in two different modes on my camera, so it's sort of a mix-and-match when it comes to the photographs, but it was really beautiful and was a very relaxing ... read more

Today we hiked Takao-san! Takao-san is a mountain only an hour away from Shinjuku, so it's a very popular place for people from Tokyo and the surrounding cities to go hiking. I particularly wanted to go after getting The Lonely Planet's "Hiking in Japan" guide to see the autumn colors - they have really started going here, finally, and they are gorgeous! Of course, being 紅葉 (autumn colors) season, it was very busy. But at least we did it on a weekday, since those are my "weekends" after all. I went with Chandra and Peter, a colleague of mine. It took about an hour to get out there from where we are, and then we had to choose what trail we wanted to go up. We ended up going the No. 6 trail, which is one ... read more

After a weekend spent with stomach-churning migraines, I finally had a 4-day holiday break, my first set of days longer than a weekend that I have gotten off since starting on July 3. Trust me, I needed it! I took Monday easy, and yesterday I went to Sweets Paradise with my coworker Rani, and we wandered around the department store there. I picked up a few things for myself - I never buy myself things, and what I bought only amounted to $20, but it was really nice to be able to do that sort of thing and not worry about financial repurcussions of it (of course, I still felt guilty for buying anything - we're still working on that!). And today I met up with my friend Sayuri to head north to Shibamata, an area ... read more

Oops!! I forgot to update again. x____x Sorry, everyone! It's been a hectic couple of weeks for me. I've been fighting off something for awhile and with my overtime and shift swaps, it's been hard finding the time to really rest and get back on my feet. However, the weather has been gorgeous, for the most part, aside from a few big storms we had - it's been raining so much here this autumn! I went to Disneyland with Wes and Chandra to see the Halloween decorations! I was pretty impressed that I got myself out there through 3 transfers, and I met them around 6 pm. My ticket was the discount ticket for after 6, which was perfect for my schedule, and even just having 4 hours was totally worth it! It was sooo awesome. ... read more

Oops, been awhile since I posted anything here! There has been some fun things happening. I've been working a lot, but since I finally got paid, my attitude towards life has improved considerably, haha. The weather has been cooling down a lot (note: mid-70's) and it's FINALLY nice enough at night that I don't have to use my A/C at all. This is really going to cut down on my bills, haha. Plus, the cool air at night feels like GREAT running weather, so a week or so ago I ran 7k just because I was so happy about the temperature. Felt awesome!! I really explore a lot when I'm running here. I pulled some overtime last week. It's not my favorite thing ever, but I suppose the extra padding to my paycheck in November (ugh) ... read more

Last weekend was Chandra's birthday, so we went to Machida to get sushi and a birthday cake. I'd never been to a rotating sushi bar, so I was pretty excited - plus, I'd never been to Machida, either! When we showed up, there was this performance going on in the street by what we figured was a junior high or high school, doing traditional dances and drums. It was REALLY cool. We didn't know what was going on, but we stayed for about 10-15 minutes to watch. It was awesome. Surprise culture! I love finding things like this, that people here take for granted because they are traditional, but for us are really interesting and beautiful. ... read more

Well, we made it through summer here. It was HOT. We went the entire month of August without any rain, and not a single day below 83 degrees (mostly it was in the 90's). Since the humidity here is just atrocious, this was a perilous journey so I am glad we are finally into September! The first three days of September were raining, marked with thunderstorms, and it was a WELCOME relief since it really cooled things down. The nights have finally been cool enough to go without my air-con and just leave my window open - which is nicer both for me AND my bank book. Work is tiring me out, so most days I just come home and putter around my apartment for awhile before bed. And my weekends are largely spent at home, ... read more

Back from my "weekend" with Lauren in Kansai! It was a very fun 2-day trip to see another part of the country and an awesome friend, even if it was ridiculously hot since it's the dog days of summer here. Blech. My trip started Sunday night when I got on my overnight bus from Yokohama Station. It was a pretty slick process - they had sent me a confirmation email telling me where to meet since the overnight company doesn't have an actual "bus stop" and instead has everyone meet in front of a bank past the station. I found it just fine, but was surprised by how many people were there. It was the meeting place of over FOUR different overnight buses that night alone, all going to different places! So I had to pay ... read more

It's been awhile since I updated! It's nearly my birthday, which means I've gotten TWO wonderful birthday packages in the mail that contained FOOD. This is excellent for me, since I am still working off my "you have no money, please be a hobo" lifestyle. I now do not have to buy groceries for several weeks, which is by far the greatest thing that ever could have come via the mail, haha. I finally got a Japanese bank account set up. It was an arduous process, and one that I do not ever wish to repeat, made more difficult by the Japanese insistence that I have a phone number - I do not have a cell phone yet, because THAT IS EXPENSIVE, YO. I don't have the money yet to get one, because I haven't gotten ... read more

After 4 1/2 weeks, I was FINALLY able to pick up my residence card from immigration today. Why it took so long must be because of the new system everyone is going on, but it was still pretty annoying considering I could neither get a cell phone nor a bank account without this stupid card (despite having the CERTIFICATE saying THAT I WAS GETTING IT). Anyway, I ended up choosing the Kawasaki Immigration office when I was doing the paperwork at the ward office since the Yokohama one just takes soooo long to get to (a whole day!) and this one was closer. It's the ward just north of me, but of course there is no direct way to get there, so it took me 3 train transfers and 45 minutes to get there. The good ... read more
